Alright, just gonna put down what I think of the metaphors and symbolism in this video. If anyone wants to add anything or delve further into it, please feel free. This video captured my attention from the moment I saw it and I've been thinking about it since.


The question "Weren't we beautiful once?" is chanted over and over as the father played by Tom Cullen climbs up the mountain presumably to sacrifice his son. Ryan Lott sings, "I promise we were, I promise we were," at the end of the verse in answer to this question. I was trying to figure out how the allusion to the story of Abraham and Isaac fits into this story. And what I've come with so far is that while Abraham was to sacrifice his son to show his faith in God. The father in this video goes to sacrifice his son as an act of faith in the love that was once alive in his marriage. Because he truly DOES believe that they were beautiful once.


The flashbacks of the two of them when they were first dating show us a cracked photograph of the father when he was a child. I think the cracked photograph symbolizes a loss of innocence. They have sex and she gives birth to a son. Once they're both parents, they can no longer be young, innocent, and carefree because they have the responsibility of a child. Instead of staying out late in the city, he's splitting wood and feeding livestock to take care of his family. They're happy at first but it seems that the struggle to provide for his family starts to take a toll on him. He loses his temper with his wife and hurts her even though he doesn't mean to. My theory is that he goes to sacrifice his son as a way to return to days when he first met his wife, when they were young and in love. But he does it also as a way to protect his son's innocence. The logic is twisted but if his son doesn't live to become an adult then he will never suffer the hardships of life and can remain forever carefree and innocent.


In the story of Abraham and Isaac, Abraham doesn't actually end up sacrificing his son, God provides a lamb to be sacrificed instead. When the father reaches the top of the mountain he looks all around in all directions searching for the lamb, searching for another way because he doesn't want to sacrifice his only son. When he sees no lamb, he decides to cut off his own hand. Someone in the comments referenced Matthew 5:30 "If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it aside," and I think that definitely plays into it because he cut off the hand that hurt his wife. But on another level, I think his hand symbolizes the sacrifice he's willing to make to revive the love that once lived between him and his wife. Because if he cuts off the hand that hurt her, they might be able to reconcile and become a happy family again. This video is beautiful testament to the lengths a person will go to save their family and marriage, to the risks a person will take to make amends to loved ones they have hurt.

I know that story and as much as I like this band, I always believed that religious beliefs and their story themes should not really be mixed with any genre of music. I think religion and religious music should be separate in its own place and genre . It just gets a bit confusing, especially for those who really don’t know the full true story and the real meaning behind it.
