Smyth, Patty - Never Enough Lyrics

I met a man who would be king
He had a dream to see forever
It was a promise in the dark
It was a promise we made together
I was a girl who would be queen
I didn't know the cost of freedom
It was a secret he would share
It was a word we both could believe in
Some kind of hero
Catch me again I'm falling
'Cause I can hear you calling

It's never enough, it's never enough
It's never enough
It's never enough, it's never enough
It's never enough

I met a man who had no name
He spoke the language of the spirit
He took a chance for heart and soul
And with a laugh, he dared me to hear it
I met a man who watched the stars
He had the faith behind the reasons
It was a secret he would share
It was a world we all could believe in
Some kind of hero
Catch me again I'm falling
'Cause I can hear you calling

It's never enough, it's never enough
It's never enough
It's never enough, it's never enough
It's never enough

I met a man who would be king
He had a dream to live together
It was a promise in the dark
But he was lost in the storm, forever
Now I'm standing here all alone
Now I know the cost of freedom
It's a secret we all can share
And it's a world we all can believe in
Some kind of hero
Catch me again I'm falling
Now and forever calling

It's never enough, it's never enough
It's never enough
It's never enough, it's never enough
It's never enough

22 morons have no idea what good music sounds like. If you don't like Patty Smyth and Scandal you must be tone-deaf. Patty Smyth rocks.

  8. s.... ....

She should've taken the offer to be in Van Halen. That would have been special.

  9. J.... L....

Never enough of Patty. She is amazing!

  10. L.... S....

Was always surprised at how this wasn’t a big hit. It’s catchy

  11. A.... L....

I love this song! Probably my favorite of hers, and she has done a lot of great songs. I have to wonder if there are rights issues to this song these days because you cannot find it, or any of the songs from this album, on services like iTunes or Spotify. As far as I can tell she does not do any of the songs from this album in concert either. Anyone know the story behind its strange official absence?

  12. R.... H....

  31. T.... G....

Victim of her record label. Should've been much bigger than she was and a longer lasting career.

    T.... G....

True. I think they thought she was a relic from the early 80s new wave pop scene and neglected her.

  32. M.... Q....

okkkkkkkk i was too wraped up in the man rocker metal bands in the 80s so i never gave Patty Smyth a chance... its now 2018 almost 2019 never say never... maybee 30 years later

  33. t.... ....

Yup I was in my 20's pretty much through all of the 80's...although I like hard rock more...I'd love to have screwed this chick

My son's first grade teacher reminds me of Patti and I've got the hots for her. Is that so wrong? LOL

  35. L.... W....

Just a Brooklyn girl who crossed the border to marry a guy from Queens.

  36. K.... A....

Class act ... Strong voice ... spot on. Good players.

  37. t.... ....

She got black balled after Scandal a little bit..she was much better than Scandal as was evidenced by her career after leaving that band.

  38. M.... ....

Patty Smyth, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Lita Ford, hermosas rockeras de siempre... Larga vida al Rock!

  40. J.... R....

I love this video, so much. But, does there exist one of her actually singing this live?

  41. C.... M....

Had a mad crush on Patty in High School. What teenage boy didn't?? Should had taken Eddies offer to join Van Halen.

  42. T.... C....

    Patty Smythe and the Hooters.

    T.... C....

Yup😁 Actually, Cyndi Laupers image totally undersold her talent as a great singer

  43. G.... W....

Patty Smyth and Pat Benatar best of the 80s hands down

  44. K.... H....

    💚💚💚💚

  45. G.... L....

what a singer, amazing vocals...this song reminds me of Cyndi Laupers Money Changes Everything...does anyone know if this is the Hootesr that she is playing with?

    G.... L....

No, she had her own band called Scandal with G.E. Smith from Saturday Night Live Band on lead guitar.

    G.... L....

YES, The guys from Hooters actually Co wrote the tunes from Never Enough, in 1987. You're welcome👍🎶

  46. b.... H....

I have been a huge fan since her Franks Soda commercials LOL. This song and video has a Steve Perry vibe to it. She was amazing. She deserved to be an even bigger star than she was.

  47. D.... T....

    The best vocalist ever!!!

  48. B.... G....

Absolutely love this song. She looks like she is having so much fun here.

    B.... G....

Patty puts heart, soul and passion into everything she does... then and NOW !!! ...She's a great entertainer :):):)

  49. 8.... ....

Do you also have a twitter page?

  50. E.... S....

Back when MTV actually played videos! I was born in '80 and I remember a lot of shit from about '85 on. I lived in a small ass town of about 1,000 people or so. No one in town, that is that I knew of had cable, a person had to have a satellite dish. Anyway, my best friend Dusty had a satellite dish, and we use to beg his parents to let us watch MTV. Man it was fuckin' great!! I was a teenager in the 'Grung' era, and it fucking sucked ass! Well, happy listening to everyone! Let's keep this great stuff alive by passing it on!

  51. d.... t....

    McEnroe is one lucky guy!

  52. H.... T....

    she is toooo sexy

    H.... T....

Patty's got that unique combination of CUTE and SEXY... then and NOW !!! :):):)

  53. P.... B....

She has a totally different vibe and vocal type than Stevie or Ann. A true rocker with an approachable attitude. Great stage presence always looks like she is having a ball. She should be in the hall of fame without a doubt

    P.... B....

Paul Bryant If there is anyone slightly a kindred spirit it’s Pat Benatar.. Perhaps even Marilyn Martin..

  54. K.... K....

    My favorite decade for music!

  55. K.... K....

    Rock,and Roll!!! Awesome!

  56. R.... M....

ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME Material EVERYONE!!!! VOTE FOR "SCANDAL" Featuring Patty Smyth...........

  57. r.... p....

i agree to a certain extent. but I still would hold Ann Wilson a little bit higher than Smyth.

  58. r.... p....

Kevin Anton I love patty Smyth but Stevie nicks and Ann Wilson are a couple of octaves higher.

  59. L.... S....

Yes, definitely underrated & overlooked. I would have sliced my pinky off for a voice like Patty's! Love her!!

  60. J.... M....

I want to do.things with her

  61. O.... E....

Exelente cancion mi epoca de oro

  62. c.... ....

Can't get enough Patty. Most underrated singer ever.

  63. 8.... ....

A Best Find. Do You Have Any More MTV2 Videos From The A-Z?

  64. r.... p....

this is my favorite patty Smyth song! she's very underrated as a singer but I think her vocals are magnificent and she deserves a spot in the top ten rock chicks of all time right up there with Stevie nicks Ann Wilson pat benatar chryssie hynd and Joan Jett.

    r.... p....

Actually, while those are some great performers, Patty Smyth's voice is spot on and much stronger.

  65. M.... A....

Wow...I love this, thanks for the upload...and NO thanks to the 4 Morons who disliked this!

    M.... A....

Up to 6. Guess the chodes couldn't handle the awesomeness and had enough.

    M.... A....

Haha, there is no accounting for taste

  66. v.... ....

One of the great rock and roll voices and a woman who shows you don't have to show a lot of skin in order to be sexy as hell. Magnificent talent!!!

    v.... ....

Well said... Patty puts heart, soul and passion into everything she does... and she's got that unique combination of CUTE and SEXY... then and NOW !!! :):):)

  67. l.... s....

The Hooters actually wrote this, when they were in a band called Baby Grand. But her version is so much better! I don't know if they're playing here or not. They wrote most of Joan Osborne's album, "Relish," also.

    l.... s....

The Hooters play on the song and the album ... I think they're in the video, but they're not on camera long enough to tell for sure.

    l.... s....

liselle sloan -Actually, the Hooters may be in the video but only the keyboardist and guitar played are on the actual music track, with Anton Fig playing the drum tracks, before he was in Letterman's band. The guitar solo wasn't the guy from the Hooters - or at least it wasn't credited that way on the album. Great song and I only heard it once before last week. It stuck with me for 30 years.

    l.... s....

Another Philadelphia guitar player named Tommy Conwell played guitar on this track. Two more Philadelphians, Hooter Andy King and Kasim Sultan from Todd Rundgren's band, did backing vocals, also.

    l.... s....

liselle sloan it's the hooters alright.

  68. C.... T....

Had this on cassette. Really wore it out. This album should have done better. A lot or great tunes in this one.

  69. F.... H....

This was my song while I was going through a divorce, really told the story

  70. M.... C....

Man.......music from the 70's and 80's was the BEST!!!!!!!

  71. R.... R....

Loved this song when it first came out. Beautiful guitars, powerful voice, great lyrics.

    R.... R....

    still love it...

  72. G.... M....

Patty's music is great. She just released a Christmas album.
    http://www.pattysmythandscandal.com/
I've been lucky to see her 3 times in the last few years. Amazing voice.

  73. C.... L....

real music and talent! today's music really has no talent, all electronic automatic crap!

    C.... L....

+C130 LM Good music is still being made, it just isn't getting played on the radio.  For one thing, Patty Smyth released a Christmas album in recent years.  There are some really good singers out there, currently, that aren't getting played on the radio.  For a current 80s style female rock singer, try Halestorm.  Their lead singer reminds me a bit of Lita Ford.  Other favorites of mine (singing voice wise) are:  Delta Goodrem, Roy Khan (Kamelot), Alexz Johnson, and Karine Hannah.

    C.... L....

C130LM you are right todays music sucks . Patty has That simple look and cuteness that I always fell for in a women.Do,s LM stand for Load Master. I was with The 463 oms AT Dyess 1980-1981

    C.... L....

If you served or are serving Thanks Then you know the cost of freedom. I knew a Young Women CC SRA Pam k Myers who lost her life 4/13/82 When her C130 74-1678 crashed in turkey along with 26 other service personnel. She will always have a special place in my heart. R.I.P.

  74. M.... C....

John McEnroe is a LUCKY man!!!!!

  75. R.... ....

Does every guy in this band wanna bang this chick?

    R.... ....

@Rexerman89 You could omit the words 'in this band' and it's still accurate.

    R.... ....

    All the str8 ones, anyway.

    R.... ....

probably not the gay ones. lol

  76. N.... K....

Patty should've been a bigger star. Her vocals are amazing.

    N.... K....

I just noticed the coment about her looks as if she would go after a sweethearts husband etc hands tied is about that isnt it? Who cares shes just sexy john mckenroe realy scored with her

    N.... K....

+Nicholas Kastanos So true I grew up through the 80s and 90s and even I did not hear of her until last night. I also read that she was asked to join Van Halen. That would have been an interesting combination and could very well have launched her to mega stardom if it had worked. Not sure why she turned it down, not that Sammy Hagar was not a top vocalist.

    N.... K....

+fractalign When she was called to join Van Halen, she was pregnant of her first child. That's why she declined to join them.

    N.... K....

She has a great popular voice. Among musicians, her voice is not remarkable. Lots of people out there with a voice this good.

    N.... K....

Amen to that! Her vocals are beyond words, but I might add, it was more than that. Patty had a blend of things that made her a cut above the rest. A great band that launched her career, her voice, and her voice, also shot her to the moon. Then you had her solo career, you had her first album, which is one of the most underrated albums to be dropped in the late 1980's. No one gave her a chance on that album. Then, she dropped another epic album in the early 1990's with a single that featured Don Henley. I mean what the fuck is wrong with a person that can't give it up for her talent?! Oh, well fuck em', right? LMFAO

  77. t.... h....

We need more Patty's in today's world...

  78. M.... C....

    horrible

  79. T.... I....

What kind of jackwagon would give this a thumbs down?

    T.... I....

@The Incorruptibles me, its terrible and im an 80s person

  80. g.... ....

    every dream...

    g.... ....

@gboy1973 her ex boyfriend hit on me and it was the proudest moment of my life, lol

  81. M.... ....

    Lo maximo Patty Smyth...!!!

  82. t.... h....

    Class...

  83. D.... G....

totally underrated talent!  they don't make them like that anymore.

  84. .... ....

Now I'm standing here all alone

  85. J.... ....

A great voice also some great songs. She also did one of the classic interviews with Howard Stern out here at YT somewhere.
    She had it going on…...

  86. E.... W....

Still the sexiest lady in rock!!!

  87. C.... P....

Gawd she was something.  Every guy on my pee wee hockey team's schoolboy fantasy.

  88. R.... A....

    Love This Song

  89. R.... Z....

Insanely great talent! Should have been a household name.

  90. T.... ....

    Patty's the best.

  91. p.... ....

God I loved this song and most 80s songs...why can't the songs of today be this good...and not have crap like Bieber?

    p.... ....

    +pythoncase You are so right!!!!!!

    p.... ....

That mentality is, unfortunately, dying out. I wonder if it will ever be as good again. I don't think it will while I am alive ... and that's as good as forever ...

  92. M.... ....

    Always enjoyed Patty's enthusiastic style.

    M.... ....

She puts heart, soul and passion into everything she does... then and NOW !!! :):):)

  93. W.... M....

    Never Enough...

  94. s.... ....

"What, am I wood?" Sorry I'm not sure what she means at the start of vid. Is it a New Yauk slang thang? hmmm

    s.... ....

+Motor City Man Thanks brother :-)

    s.... ....

It may mean "What am I, dense as wood?" Or oblivious and may have a secret meaning to someone particular, such as her former band members, Scandal. Far more happens off stage than on, bitter infighting fir example. "How can you tell? I'm just one of the out of focus guys!".

    s.... ....

Sorry. It is an old phrase--used a lot in the Arthur Avenue area of the Bronx and I am sure other boroughs including Brooklyn. Similar to the phrase "he/she who he/she is." (meaning stuck up).
"What am I wood?" was used whenever one was slighted or thought they were being ignored. A common phrase back then. There's no secret meaning here.

    s.... ....

Read "he/she thinks who he she is" or "they think who they are"

    s.... ....

It is a New York thing. I heard it first in 1980 at Rutgers University

  95. s.... ....

Sweet little thing! I love her voice. Man I miss the 80's. Being in your 20's when music had hit is pinnacle was the greatest feeling ever. Hoppin' in your car and having that wave of euphoric sound engulf you was pure heaven on earth. With the likes of Don Henley, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Van Halen, Scandal, Prince, Bon Jovi, n on and on at your fingertips, as diverse as they all were, those tunes hit the summer sun like a hand in glove. God bless the 80's!

    s.... ....

Oh i miss the eighties forever, too. it´s the greatest of my life. the Music was so unbelievable - cindy lauper, Madonna, van halen, journey, hooters, White Lion, rainbow, bon Jovi, Alice cooper, poison, all the glamrock, accept, and of course the Boss bruce springsteen. Where is the time goes???? I miss you this so much, and never comeback. Paul Young "come back and stay forever.......

    s.... ....

    @Steffen Ballenberger Yes, well said!

    s.... ....

    Well Said StratStan Bravo !

    s.... ....

80/20 YES! I was in my 20's almost exactly in the 80's too (I turned 18 in early 81!), it was freaking AWESOME!!!!! *GO WEST COAST!!!! :)*

    s.... ....

I am still in the '80s as far as music goes because it is all I listen to. Class of '82 here and like you said it was good to be young right in the middle of all the great music.

  96. P.... B....

So love this song-should've been a smash not only reaching #61 in 1987. This is actually a cover of a song by Baby Grand from the 70's which had both Eric and Rob from The Hooters. Different lyrics and much ballsier here, but the original is a good song as well. Patty rules-Franks? Thanks!

  97. B.... T....

I love the way she performs her songs---great dancing moves. Her voice is so great. She's so cute.

    B.... T....

Patty's got that unique combination of CUTE and SEXY... then and NOW !!! Heart, soul and passion in everything she does... again, then and NOW !!! :):):)

  98. T.... H....

Definitely under rated, what a great talent! Was in a cover band in the '80's and we played a lot of her songs.

  99. p.... e....

    Love this album
Great voice, and full of great songs - need it on iTunes
Hooters played on it, wrote some of it and made a wonderful team with Patty
