Smokey Robinson - Holly Lyrics
Holly made the rules
She laid down all the laws
Then broke the ones she made
Most folks would be afraid
To play the games that Holly played
When she was seventeen
She ran away from home
As fast as she could run
Said home was just no fun
There was an awful lot of doing to be done
Holly on a cloud in the sky
Way above the crowd flying high, ooh-ooh...
Holly on a cloud in the sky, yeah
Way above the crowd flying high
Holly made the scene
She's gone to every place
She never should have been
Oh, but she was hanging in
Couldn't tell her nothing then, no
Strangers in the night
Have paid a handsome price
To sleep in Holly's bed
She couldn't see that far ahead
To know that she'd become
One of the living dead
Holly on a cloud in the sky, ooh-ooh...
Way above the crowd flying high, ooh-ooh...
Holly was confused
She did some things
That even she could no explain
Oh, but now she's so in pain
The devil running through her veins
Holly on a cloud in the sky, ooh-ooh...
Way above the crowd flying high
How could Holly make such a great mistake
To take that she could beat the rap
In just one fling, it never happened
Holly on a cloud in the sky, ooh, Holly
Way above the crowd flying high
Ooh-ooh-ooh...
Holly on a cloud in the sky
Ooh, life is passing by, yeah
Way above the crowd flying high
Ooh, life is passing by...

Must admit I was living in darkness, selling drugs ,using them, gangs, violence, woman, I thought I was it until they told me I need a pace maker😲 the joke was on me,EVERYDAY is a struggle for sanity 💚✌💯🎈
I had a girlfriend when i younger and I was singing this adding my own WORDS and she DDNT EVEN notice, I felt like such a MACK DADDY 💯❤🎈🔥🔥🔥
I had a friend who was just so beautiful. Her husband left her and the guy she met afterwards introduced her to heroin. She started shooting up and became addicted. She died from Aids. This song reminds me of her too...
thankfully can't relate to this or think of anyone this reminds me of, but as someone who's also 17, i appreciate the message Smokey's sending with this one. Defo the signs of a legendary musician when his music transcends time itself and stays relevant and enjoyable to future generations +40 years later. Great track
Smokey wrote songs about what was really going on, folks were dipping and doing plenty of things.
i love this song. i remeber it make me cry

THIS IS A VERY NICE SONG THANK YOU FOR SHARING.
This was my favorite song, I lived my life, listen to this song. I was Holly.
An overlooked Smokey masterpiece!
yes indeed
Rough but real...life in America in the 70's.
Mr Carl Covington my friend also Passed away at 17 in high school and this song was out then...Bring back memories. ...
That song could have saved so many lives if it was more popular and more readily accessible to the public...I heard it when I was in south Carolina back in the seventies ...beautiful ballad...thank you Smokey....
This song brought me though so much in my childhood. I wouldn't have made it with out it
Agree--very beautiful and yes, thank you Smokey (again and again). This may be my favorite of all his wonderful songs.
I love how the in the oldies comment sections there are just people reminiscing where they were when these songs were popular. I wish I was born in this era.
Smokey, most creative period after the Miracles. Compositions, gets overlooked.
thx 4 posting this, boy did it bring back memories.
RIP Johnny Borrego SR . 1-2-16
I dedicated all the smokey Robinson songs to my Dad Johnny Borrego SR. from his one and only Johnny Borrego jr.

Carl so sorry 😢
Only seventeen, wow! So many years lost! Man,the world must have shook for everyone who knew her!
It has been FOREVER since I've heard this wonderful song. Had totally forgotten about it. So glad to see it here; and to have the chance to hear it again.
this is real music
This song was written about the life of BILLIE HOLIDAY. SO SAD
No it's about his daughter
Holly Robinson has never been a prostitute nor a drug addict.
That song reminded me of myself. So young, left home. Started hanging around wrong people. I knew, everything. Was thankful to be able to get away from it, was 16 at time. Was doing so much better at 24, Im very lucky alot of drugs running in 70s!!
My cousin died from heroin addiction at age 19. that was back in the 70's. Sad to see the re-emergence of heroin addiction. But yes, this song reminds me of my cousin Jackie. smh
another classic
Who gonna take the blame & Holly was the same girl he had MUCH LOVE 4 she grew up with him in the same PROJECTS & her name now is The Boss, MS. DIANA RISSUES ijs
Smokey at his lyrical peak!
charles carter .
I played those games when I was in high school. Thought I was cool, being a bad ass. Sneaking into adult venues and doing adult things. I ended up with PTSD from the abuse I brought on myself becoming "one of the living dead." However, this was our theme back in 1973. It's just my soul responding.
Most would be afraid to play the games that Holly played.
I know a lot of hollys and they lived and sometimes died tragic lives. I thank God For Jesus I never got caught up in that life I had too many people in my life for me to get hung up in that madness
Growing up in Harlem during the heroin epidemic, Im thankful to have survived those times...
Blessed indeed you were to have support. People got stuck and didn't have that hand or help to pull them up. Give me the trees anyday...
ilike this song smokey robinson holly in 1973 sign kevin lane
grew up on this song. so sad!
30 some yrs after the murder of my sister,I can still feel the agony and that god awful sound of my mother just wailin the moment we saw the police walkin up OUR stairway.
u will never know how far my mind traveled to recall this song, my SINCERE THANK YOU for this wonderful post.
@Leo55... - Your Holly sounds like she wanted a major ride, and to-hell with whatever lie ahead. Okay...Youth has its own furiousity. I hope she made it through all that too.
Update...that was some good shit I had; made me lose five years of memory. Actually was listening to this in 1973...This and Black Ivory, "Our Future."
Remember hearing this for the first time in Roxbury, Ma. back in 1977? Met a "Holly" in Boston Commons one late night. Road the subway trains, smoked pot, drank Cinzano, and...? Holly, hope you made it through it all.
This never stop love this then and now
Peter Vincent - You are so right. So terribly many Hollys. It won't ever stop being so crushingly sad. I know one; poor, beautiful, pretty, lost Holly-Lorraine. Just 21 years old. She was found in a Hollywood dumpster seven years ago horrifically raped and beaten to death. So many Hollys. So many tears for us to weep. Every young lady's strength is our strength. Family members to you or not - We love you all much too much to be able to bear this kind of pain. Be good to us - No more Hollys.
this song is for any young women. please dont make the mistake.there a lot of hollys. stay strong
