Smiths, The - William, It Was Really Nothing Lyrics
The rain falls hard on a humdrum town
this town has dragged you down
oh the rain falls hard on a humdrum town
this town has dragged you down
and God knows I've got to live mine
God knows I've got to live mine
William, William it was really nothing
William, William it was really nothing
it was your life
How can you stay with a fat girl who'll say:
"Would you like to marry me
and if you like you can buy the ring"
"Would you like to marry me
and if you like you can buy the ring"
I don't dream about anyone
except myself
William, William it was really nothing
William, William

Smiths, The William, It Was Really Nothing Comments
caralho?
wish i could cut out morrisey, sorry to say
Thank you Morrissey for being there in those days. It was intimate & special... ;)
Beginning of the song, first four verses, is another perfect combination of Marr’s and Morrissey’s geniuses: Lyrics with Morrissey’s voice, matching perfectly with Marr’s guitar riffs and sounds, or, vice versa. It’s one of the most memorable song sections in my memory.
Love this!
not sure how to feel about the Smiths, what with Morrissey being such a racist piece of shit nowadays..
P Henning I’m sticking with Mr. Marr now ;)
His voice is so calming and it makes me feel relieved for some reason
Early MGTOW
It's a song about a gay affair between the narrator and a man who went back into the closet and marries some girl who doesn't care for him to hide his homosexuality. It has nothing to do with MGTOW shit.
@Alien Alun Morrissey has said of the song: "It occurred to me that within popular music if ever there were any records that discussed marriage they were always from the female's standpoint, female singers singing to women. There were never any songs saying 'do not marry, stay single, self-preservation,' etc. I thought it was about time there was a male voice speaking directly to another male saying that marriage was a waste of time ... that, in fact, it was absolutely nothing." So maybe original poster has a point.
@manny44 In that exact same article: "This song chronicles a love triangle between a marrying couple and a gay friend. The friend asks "William" why he is marrying a "fat girl" who "doesn't care about anything." It would seem that the friend had an affair with William in the past, but William is now in denial of his homosexuality and is marrying a woman instead - much to the friend's dismay. This is widely believed to be about front man Morrissey's friendship with William "Billy" Mackenzie, lead singer of the Scottish post-punk band, Associates. In 1993, Associates recorded "Stephen, You're Really Something" in response (Morrissey's first name is Steven)."
@Alien Alun I definitely always heard it in the homosexual context myself but....I like hearing as many different interpretations of a song as it can reasonably hold and I think they both are interesting.
amazing vocal performance regardless!!
What a fucking great album. Remember creativity on top of creativity in kind of like a Dionysian explosion of constant (thinking) and communicating. It's at the centre of Theatre and (older good quality) talk show hosts.
Now go!
the Best OF THE BEST Morrissey
This is a really good sounding source of the song.
Every song tells a story 💗
The greatest song they did for me, who else could have wrote it or called it so?

The Smith's song are my life soundtrack
I practiced singing with the Smiths back in the original days. My odd range fit perfectly, in & around Morrisey’s & his vocal gymnastics never ceased to amaze!
Still, decades later, I try to exercise singingly to his/their music.
One of my favorite songs

uma dentre tantas obras primas
Now in English: I remember perfectly when I met the band. The year was 2016, December 18th. This is a remarkable day, because that's when I decided to get interested in really important things. I started by resolving to enter the Reading Library (Saraiva). I decided to buy some books to get out of this immensity of emptiness, pain and suffering. The love of reading was instantaneous. I spent hours there and discovered that this was my place. I was looking at a book when I was playing a song on the radio in the bookstore. Until then he had totally ignored the music. That's when a girl of about 23 years of age passes next to me. She was singing the song with so much feeling that I had to comment with my friend next to her saying: The people who visit this place are people with culture. People who are light years ahead of us. I can not stay behind.
At the same moment, I mentally asked myself: This song is good. Was not that the kind of thing you were after?
Then I immediately picked up my cell phone and opened Shazam. I held up my cell phone so it was possible to identify the music I was playing. I quickly discovered that the name of the song I was playing was: *William, it was really nothing* 🖤
Throughout the year 2017 I got to know the rest of the songs. I have one of the band that is considered as my favorite song, but it is undeniable that *William, it was really nothing* was the song that, along with reading, began to change my life. The Smiths is timeless 🖤✨❄
your anniversary coming up
@Gumadnason Is today! my renaissance birthday
thank you! It's really cool to read story like this.
No mesmo momento, me questionei mentalmente: Essa música é boa.
The Smiths é atemporal 🖤✨❄
Estou disposto a espalhar a banda por onde eu for. Vocês são os melhores. Parabéns pelo ótimo gosto musical! Não esqueçam... Há uma luz que nunca se apaga! 💡✨
Such eloquence; musically, lyrically, sigh...
I live in the Philippines and I love the smiths
I live on planet earth and i love the smiths
A MELHOR BANDA ATÉ HJ!!!!
Classic! Thanks for sharing.
Verdade ❤
