Smiths, The - This Night Has Opened My Eyes Lyrics

In a river the colour of lead
Immerse a baby's head
Wrap her up in the News Of The World
Dump her on a doorstep, girl
This night has opened my eyes
And I will never sleep again

You kicked and cried like a bullied child
A grown man of twenty-five
He said he'd cure your ills
But he didn't and he never will
So, save your life
Because you've only got one

The dream has gone
But the baby is real
Oh you did a good thing
She could have been a poet
Or, she could have been a fool
Oh you did a bad thing
And I'm not happy
And I'm not sad

A shoeless child on a swing
Reminds you of your own again
She took away your troubles
Oh but then again she left pain
So please save your life
Because you've only got one

The dream has gone
But the baby is real
Oh you did a good thing
She could have been a poet
Or, she could have been a fool
Oh you did a bad thing
And I'm not happy
And I'm not sad

Imagine telling THIS Morrissey that he'd be a right-wing, racist nationalist in 2020. Tragic.

    T.... E....

I was trying to avoid his music bc of his vile opinions, however this one is just great. People change and unfortunately he changed into an ordinary old, white, racist bigot.

  11. D.... N....

Forever one of my favourite songs, heard them play it live in '84, now 36 years later I'm still listening.

    M.... P....

@J O’Brien hes so arrogant and entitled give a look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuWf843opGI

    M.... P....

So you don't like him because he isn't a SJW?

    M.... P....

@aabens No, i"m not a SJW but I respect others opinions and don't shove mine down their throats. and I'm currently I'm not racist or an extremest like him. I dislike him because he isn't a decent human being with the brain to show compassion to others. he thinks he's better than everyone and thinks he can get away with the shit he does. he's just a lame sad human and he inflicts his pain onto others. he should stick to music cause thats what he's good at.

    M.... P....

@Martin Pasley welcome to the human race

This song is written about the characters in Shelagh Delaney’s play “A Taste of Honey”, which was eventually made into a film starring Rita Tushingham, a British actress. Delaney is also from Manchester..and this is one of Morrissey s favorite films. He often wrote smiths songs with references to growing up and being from Manchester, as well as things in popular culture that made an impact on him somehow. The song “Suffer Little Children” is about The Moors Murders. Ian Brady and his girlfriend Myra Hindley kidnapped like 7 or 8 young children, and early teens. I can’t remember exactly. Brady raped, tortured and eventually killed all his victims before burying them on the Moors outside Manchester. Hindley was compliant and willing to do whatever brady asked of her cuz “she loved him so much...” it’s the sickest shit you can imagine. The case was huge and shocked England. It happened in the early 1960’s. Both received life and I believe Ian Brady died last year, still in prison. Myra would lure the kids and then kidnap them after leading them to Ian Brady’s waiting car. Leslie Ann Downs was their first victim. There is audio recording of her pleading for her life so she “could go home to her mummy..” she even says she promises she won’t tell anyone what they’ve done to her.. she tries to tell them she likes it, in a vain effort to save her life..she is strangled and buried on the moors. Brady recorded his victims being raped and tortured so he could go back and listen to it again and relive the experience over and over..

Kyle Heisler something about that line sticks, cuts so deep. Maybe we can all relate some way or another.

    K.... H....

    That's a powerful line.

  77. B.... B....

The absolute worst thing about being in my early 20s in the early 80s was the douchebags with long perms that thought REO Speedwagon and Journey were the greatest thing. They had no clue who The Smiths or Joy Division were, and labeled me with unrepeateble nicknames. To them The Cars and The Police were the birth of new music, and it took an epidemic of cocaine in the US to even dream up this ignorance.
I thank God for The Smiths, for coming along when they did. If I had ever caught myself humming away at some Journey song I hope I would have shot myself.

    B.... B....

I Guess you don't take the midnight train

  78. S.... R....

The Smiths should be in the U.K school curriculum for every person over twelve years of age.
