Smithereens, The - Sorry Lyrics

Things get better when we're apart
'Cause every time I'm with you girl, you break my heart
'Cause you don't look at things the same as me
You say stay, and I say no
You make me wanna run when you say hello
'Cause you and I will always disagree

I will stand up, I will fall
Please don't wait for me to call
I would like to say I'm sorry but I won't

Words you whisper into my ear
Just make me wanna run, wanna disappear
'Cause I don't look at things the way you do
I'm not happy when you're around
You make me wanna run, wanna hit the ground
And you're just not the girl that I once knew

I would like to make your day
But I'd rather fade away
I would like to say I'm sorry but I won't

Now my back's against the wall
But I'm not afraid at all
I would like to say I'm sorry but I won't

Things get better when we're apart
And everytime I'm with you girl, you break my heart
'Cause I don't look at things the way you do

You will not forgive my sins
In this game where no one wins
I would like to say I'm sorry but I won't

No I'm never going to stay
And I'll soon be on my way
I would love to say I'm sorry but I won't

Say sorry baby but I won't
Baby I won't
Say sorry baby but I won't
Baby I won't
Say sorry baby but I won't
Baby I won't

Smithereens, The Sorry Comments
  1. I.... ....

Never make the mistake of thinking that great bands with great songs only reside on top 40, cover of Rolling Stone magazine or the RNR hall of fame ! The Smithereens were real music lovers; playing for other real music lovers!

  2. n.... ....

They had a sound unlike any other. What a great loss losing Pat from this world. Too soon.

  3. M.... ....

This track isn't just a song, it's a work of art

  5. L.... ....

Man, this band was tight! Jim's looking like the world is right, he's respecting it; Dennis looks like he's seated behind the wheel of a Ferrari toward the end; Pat just doing what he does, and Thrilla just impressing the hell out of me...great tune and great video...thanks!

  18. H.... O....

    This ain't no Utterblax 2011

  19. S.... E....

Sheer rock-and-roll mastery! One of things that distinguishes the Smithereens is their big, thick guitar sound and their ability to subtly vary the rhythm at different points in the song, giving it an agile, "cooking" feel. These guys are awesome.

  20. J.... M....

    Fantastic band!

such a catchy great song Pat was a master of the great melodie one of the best underated songwriters in rock history may he rest in peace. I agree Rich some music fans are just stupid The Smithereens were so much better than a lot of crappy rock bands who sold more records in the late 1980's or 1990's.

  40. J.... T....

    This song is epic

  41. H.... Z....

My band had the honor to open for these guys a few years ago. Gentlemen all. Pat was the sweetest guy ever in Rock and Roll. He was a brilliant singer and songwriter and his sense of melody was impeccable. I wish I had that ability. They are all professionals, but they dig in like nobodies business. They beleive themselves to be a metal band! True! Jim B. and I polished off a bottle of Scotch together late into the night. Long live Pat Dinizio and The Smithereens!

    H.... Z....

  58. T.... R....

    ahhh, someone still plays rocknroll

  59. k.... b....

I met Pat 6 years ago at a "Living room concert" in St. Louis..
I had the privilege of hanging out with him all night. He's one of the most amazing guys in the music industry,, yet so grounded and humble..
    101% AWESOME GUY !!!

    k.... b....

Pat is a team player, not a prima donna. Why spoil a good thing? Obviously these guys are the closest of friends as well as band mates.

    k.... b....

Agreed. Never got to meet him, but saw the 'reens live a few times, and had a number of email exchanges with Pat. He always answered my emails and was very genuine and yeah, humble. The world lost a great one when he passed.

  60. D.... J....

been a huge fan since the beginning... always felt commercial radio underserved them!

    D.... J....

The only time they appear on radio these days is on The Mike Francesa Show if he's doing a live remote somewhere. They are one one of rock's most underrated bands of the past three decades.

  61. G.... P....

You gents just flat rock. Always have.

  62. J.... M....

The intro riff is "Sin City" by AC/DC

    J.... M....

The first time I saw them they opened the show with "Back in Black".

  63. R.... C....

    GOD BLESS THE SMITHEREENS!!!!

    R.... C....

Robbie Cadwell. you got that right

  64. t.... o....

Back when rock n roll was going to hell the SMITHEREENS came along with the muchh needed heavy guitar sound. We cranked up our FM radios and rejoiced! Still rocking and still great!!

  65. m.... ....

    gods. game on

  66. j.... ....

Just saw them last night. Pat didn't play guitar and they still rocked the house!

    j.... ....

I hope his hand is better now!

    j.... ....

    Get well Pat DiNizio!!!! #GetWellPatDiNizio #TheSmithereens #ItCameFromNewJersey

  67. P.... J....

    WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love it.

  68. J.... S....

    DAMN!!! Still sound GREAT!!!!

  69. M.... V....

I miss the Rickenbackers. Just a little, but still.

  70. b.... ....

Nothing flashy....just good old rockin and rollin. And one of the best parts is they are watchable. For the most part, one really can't say that when it comes to the world of rock.  So many thanks for sharing these guys.

  71. M.... R....

Great song and the whole album or disc is strong ! I am 54 and I have listened to all the classic rock. The Smithereens are in my top 10 of all time. I just love that poppy well crafted sound they have. Let's hope they are working on another album release SOON !!!!

    M.... R....

+Mark R You're just about my age...do you listen to any new music?

    M.... R....

Mark R I saw these guys at the Stockton Asparagus festival. Nobody was there. I would have been pissed but it was like I had the Smithereens all to myself. Love this band and their music.

  72. J.... B....

Love the Smithereens !!  Still rock''in  the  60 's "British Invasion" vibe!!

  73. J.... M....

Now this is what music should be. Fuck the crap like Rap which is only popular because  the records labels need the money. F Em

  74. S.... F....

Súper prendida la rola, los amo!!!!!

  75. N.... T....

They just keep rock and rolling along after all these years!

    N.... T....

    @Nico Tena Yes sir.

  76. M.... C....

Whoa!... ya done the job AGAIN!  - man ya got me dancin'!!!  Just don't ever lose that sound! - damn that's good!

  77. d.... ....

Damn, how could i have been so stupid?I had only ever listened to "Blood and Roses"...I could have been enjoying the rest of their music all along.Oh well,I was late to the party but I got here eventually!

    d.... ....

@darkfey1963 Not "stupid", just "not aware." It's never too late to find and appreciate the good stuff!

    d.... ....

Thank you! My ears work and this is definitely good stuff!

    d.... ....

@darkfey1963 Many did not like "A Date with the Smithereens" It was a great album, though some of the songs were "dark"

    d.... ....

    I did the same thing...

  78. S.... P....

These guys can do no wrong

  79. R.... M....

It baffles me how two people don't like this. Smithereens are a national treasure!

    R.... M....

    RIP PAT

    R.... M....

one of the best rock bands ever. they kick ass.

    R.... M....

I agree, I always wondered how they weren't more popular when they were better than most bands out there

  80. N.... D....

Great tune...they can still rock....keep making music boys !!

  81. E.... O....

    Amazing!!!

  82. m.... ....

no one creates power pop with consistent hooks the way these guys do.

  83. e.... ....

    love you guys

  84. K.... N....

You look at these guys, and how easily they float along as they play their instruments with such ease and confidence, and you can see the fruition of the decades of experience they've had. They're true musicians.

They have a true love and friendship for each other, and despite his predicament, Pat is completely at home in a business that dictates bodily appearance and has no fear.  Despite what some will say (and have said) Pat's heart will always be the biggest part of him.  I hope these guys have many more years together!

    K.... N....

@Kain Nosgoth Just personally, I was hoping for a different body part.

    K.... N....

    @Jetsanna Ha ha :-)

    K.... N....

Tears are in my eyes after reading your kind words,,,,met the boys several times,,,,true ambassadors of r&r,,,,and just great guys ,,,go easy Patrick

  85. B.... H....

Was in a band that warmed up for Pat the height of Smitereenamania. Great guys, great music! Glad to see them still getin'er done!

  86. A.... M....

They sound just as good as they did in the 80s!  Not a lot of bands can do that through the decades...

    A.... M....

I was just thinking the same thing as I was listening to this track....so good for sooooo long. RIP Pat

  87. p.... ....

Playing Bethlehem, Pa. this Saturday. psyched.

  88. M.... L....

I have loved these guys since the eighties.  I remember playing Green Thoughts on cassette, driving around the campus where I was at law school.  This song is absolutely fantastic!

  89. R.... V....

Anyone remember powerpop from the late 80s, this band are it , ace stuff

  90. A.... D....

Good Lord how are they not a household name? This song is so fucking good.

  91. M.... ....

THESE guys have always sounded awesome. One of my Favorites pure and simple.

  92. A.... ....

    Long live the Smithereens!
Great to hear Pat and the band are still writing and recording. They have a unique sound that just grabs your muse and makes it feel good. Great melodies again!

  93. R.... G....

The rocked Pershing Square last night in Los Angeles . Love this tune.

  94. P.... C....

Met these guys back in 93' in Augusta, GA. Pat's voice was shot to start and they thought that there going to have to cancel the show. After gargling lemon juice and salt water off and on for 30 minutes they came out a kicked ass.

Great group of fellas and heck of a band!

  95. K.... N....

    You said it, man!

  96. H.... S....

No, avoid the 3 covers albums where they play inferior versions of songs byThe Beatles and The Who. The Smithereens' strongest point is their original material.

  97. H.... S....

Yeah, so true. The songs have lasted all these years. Pat's voice reminds me of Elvis Costello or even Evan Dando from Lemonheads.

  98. H.... N....

I've been a Smithereens fan since 1989...my senior year in high school, when I first saw the video for "Only A Memory" on MTV (remember when they actually played MUSIC VIDEOS instead of "all reality shows all the time"). I had their "Green Thoughts", "11", and "Blow Up" CD's, as well as a greatest hits CD. Love the Smithereens' music...simple, basic, and real. You don't need a synthesizer and/or auto-time when you've got real talent.
