Smithereens, The - Only A Memory Lyrics

My mind is filled with thoughts of you
I think about the days of two
I search the room but you're not there
Your perfume lingers everywhere

But it's only a memory
Of what our love was going to be
Only a memory
Broken bits of you and me
Only a memory
Only a memory

In a world of pain I have no peer
You fade away and disappear
And now I have to learn the game
Where no one wins or takes the blame

But it's only a memory
Of what our love was going to be
Only a memory
Now that we are history
Only a memory
Only a memory

But it's only a memory
Of what our love was going to be
Only a memory
Broken bits of you and me
Only a memory
Only a memory

Why should it matter if I cry?
I sit around and wonder why
Now I feel much too weak to live
And I've got nothing left to give

Now it's only a memory
Of what our love was going to be
Only a memory
Broken bits of you and me
Only a memory
Only a memory

Only a memory, only a memory
Only a memory, only a memory
Only a memory, only a memory
Only a memory, only a memory

Only a memory, only a memory
Only a memory, only a memory
Only a memory, only a memory
Only a memory, only a memory

Memory
Memory

  3. A.... U....

  4. J.... B....

Great song. I hear a bit of Nirvana circa Nevermind on that chorus. Can hear one of Kurt's many influences here. :)

In a world of pain I have no peer I sure can relate to that

  6. M.... P....

    Great song.

  7. B.... G....

Saw them August 2017. Pat was so sick. You could see it but he was a trooper. RIP PAT

I had no idea Pat had died.
    My heart is forever broken.

  9. D.... M....

I like the James Bond aspect of the video

  10. d.... f....

I don't like the major fifth chord change at the end of every line in the verse. Don't like it

  11. f.... v....

this is just one of their great songs. such a great band.

  12. T.... M....

These guys always had a sound closer to 90's alternative or post with just a hint of new wave mixed in.

    T.... M....

    They're pre Nevermind alternative.

  13. j.... m....

Why do bands hate our city?

  16. M.... D....

    Turn it up!!

  17. W.... ....

Fabulous band. Amazing pop. WIthout the mass appeal - sadly for hem.

  18. a.... ....

I think over the years, the term, pop music somehow got a bad rap. This was a GREAT POP BAND.

  19. D.... H....

Yooo Nirvana..and "alt" scene in general
    Your welcome.

    D.... H....

This is why Kurt liked this band. This band started Grunge back in mid 80s. Don't no why it didn't start the Grunge movement back then.

  20. J.... B....

OMG I haven't heard this since 1988 when I was 19!!!!!! The Reagan years. Cassettes and boomboxes!!!!

    Great song!

  28. J.... ....

Pat left his mark on rock and roll..

  29. B.... B....

Funk all this. These guys belong in the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME. WITH BACK PAY! pats voice was legend. The rest need to stand up and scream. Smithereens are entitled to fame. The band needs to step up for pat.

  30. 1.... ....

This is the most beautiful guitar riff.

  31. n.... a....

We hired him for a "living room concert." It was Pat and a couple guitars. I was pretty young at the time, still in college and I got a little too drunk and accidentally knocked one of his guitars over. I felt like such a stupid dick, but he was really cool about it, "that's alright, Jimbo" while in the middle of his song. He was such a super cool guy. I'm so lucky I met him before he passed.

  32. F.... ....

I was so lucky to see them in Perishing Square the last time before Pat NuniZio died!

  33. D.... R....

    Pat R.I.P.

  61. G.... S....

Love this song from my University days!

  62. 6.... ....

    ONLY A MAMMARY

  63. T.... J....

"In a world of pain I have no peer". Pat could write lyrics. I'm glad we had him as long as we did.

  64. D.... ....

Heard this song in a movie from 1988 and was seriously confused. I don't even think it's that exceptional, personally, but this sound was WAY ahead of it's time.

  65. M.... B....

For some reason, this reminds me of NIRVANA.

    M.... B....

    Max Bolten Kurt loved them.

  66. W.... ....

    Only A Memory !

  67. P.... D....

Such an effing great tune... just found out Mr. DiNizio is no longer with us. :-(

  68. F.... O....

Damn. What a great band this was. RIP Pat

  69. S.... ....

A lot of bands we considered grunge used this album as a reference, it was sort of ahead of it's time.

  70. T.... J....

Those guys got me through the 80s

  71. C.... ....

Pat was asked why he only wrote songs about relationships.
He was quoted a saying, "What else is there?"

  72. j.... t....

    RIP Pat (2017)

  73. D.... N....

Great band. Great studio band. Great live band. Great songs. RIP Pat.

  74. J.... A....

  75. M.... S....

The Smithereens were one of the most underrated bands of their time, they were great musicians. RIP Pat DiNizio, and thank you for the years of great music.

  76. d.... ....

I'm 40 and love this song.

  77. 5.... ....

I like the James Bond like imagery in this video.

  78. F.... ....

I REMEMBER THIS SONG. HOW IT WENT STRAIGHT INTO ME. BECAME PART OF ME.

    F.... ....

    Yes, exactly!
I've heard only snippets every day at work for over a month now and it just cut right into me, like I had always known it.

  79. D.... ....

My cover tunes band played Blood and roses, but I liked this song better :)

  80. B.... M....

This video is like a James Bond intro.
    A LASTING MEMORY.

  81. r.... ....

Maybe it IS Only A Memory, but it's one that will endure .

  88. D.... M....

The Ritz in Roseville!!!!! Dang was that awesome.

  89. d.... ....

Broken bits of you and me.....

  90. E.... C....

BRILLIANT MUSIC. SHOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BIGGER. THE CRAP ON THE RADIO THAT GETS MORE AIRPLAY SHOCKS ME!!!! THAT VOICE IS BUTTER.

  91. f.... ....

Q104.3 FM New York City was paying tribute to Pat Dinizio after he died. They resurrected some past interviews with him, and he said he was influenced by the Beatles when he wrote this song, mainly the song 'I Want to Tell You' from the revolver album. The guitar riff is very similar.

  92. A.... M....

When I was in the Marines back in 1990, before streaming was available, I had my friends record the local radio station for me.  Then they would mail out a bunch of tapes so it was like I was home listening to my favorite station.  I remember this song was on one of the tapes, I didn't really know the bands music well back then but now I'm a fan 26 years later.

  93. P.... D....

Great band, great singer with a unique voice ... so rare in this day of digitalized post-production. We used to play a few Smithereens songs in my band back in the '80s, I always liked their music. R.I.P. Pat ...

  94. J.... C....

they were always a favorite of mine back in the 80s...it's just a shame they never really got that big, I think they were always in the shadow of more popular groups like ac/dc, g & r, etc...

  95. f.... m....

    Unforgettable Song. Band

  96. M.... C....

only a memory of how good it was back then ... but the tune still kicks ass

  97. B.... M....

Really sad that this song is all too fitting now.
Thank you,Pat, for the timeless music.
Rest peacefully Behind The Wall Of Sleep.

  98. L.... V....

I love how this looks like a Bond movie intro
