Smith, Patti - Kimberly Lyrics
The wall is high, the black barn,
The babe in my arms in her swaddling clothes
And I know soon that the sky will split
And the planets will shift,
Balls of jade will drop and existence will stop.
Little sister, the fates are calling on you.
Ah, here I stand again in this old 'lectric whirlwind,
The sea rushes up my knees like flame
And I feel like just some misplaced Joan Of Arc
And the cause is you lookin' up at me.
Oh baby, I remember when you were born,
It was dawn and the storm settled in my belly
And I rolled in the grass and I spit out the gas
And I lit a match and the void went flash
Balls of jade dropped and existence stopped, stopped, stop, stop.
Little sister, the sky is falling, I don't mind, I don't mind.
Little sister, the fates are calling on you.
I was goin' crazy, so crazy I knew I could break through with you,
So with one hand I rocked you and with one heart I reached for you.
Ah, I knew your youth was for the takin', fire on a mental plane,
So I ran through the fields as the bats with their baby vein faces
Burst from the barn and flames in a violent violet sky,
And I fell on my knees and pressed you against me.
Your soul was like a network of spittle,
Like glass balls movin' in like cold streams of logic,
And I prayed as the lightning attacked
That something will make it go crack, something will make it go crack,
Something will make it go crack, something will make it go crack.
The palm trees fall into the sea,
It doesn't matter much to me
As long as you're safe, Kimberly.
And I can gaze deep
Into your starry eyes, baby, looking deep in your eyes, baby,
Looking deep in your eyes, baby, looking deep in your eyes, baby,
Into your starry eyes, oh.
Oh, in your starry eyes, baby,
Looking deep in your eyes, baby, looking deep in your eyes, baby, oh.
Oh, looking deep in your eyes, baby,
Into your starry eyes, baby, looking deep in your eyes, baby

She sounds terrible you had to be on LSD to get through her music sounds just as bad as she looks! SheS an antiChrist too
As long as the hand that rocks the cradle is mine

Although you're only three, sonny boy

Seen her at the Red Rail and the Bottom Line...I fell for her head over heels when she spit on the stage...
I had just arrived at NYU as a freshman when this came out in 1975. She was singing it around the block at The Bitter End and just as quickly it was on vinyl. I can remember the exact moment a neighbor in Weinstein (dormitory) put this on his turntable. The energy brings back the way I felt then - great - happy - young - anything could happen!
Sam Adams I’m so damn jealous
Mozzer brought me here.
my first time listening to Patti smith music other than "Because the Night" and now I know why she was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of fame. Her poetry and multi stylistic rock sound pays a great deal of tribute to Jim Morrison of the Doors too and much more than I ever imagined.
Springsteen wrote that. You did know?
@Nic Lawson NO, he did not, does anything Springsteen ever write even ever sound remotely like that? He may have helped her with the melody, but that would have been it.
My favorite song. Yes, I'm old. That's how I know what's good.
I was 16 when Horses came out. I love this entire lp still. I was even blessed to have met Patti and her son in a completely random encounter in San Francisco 1995. She was so sweet and real. I was tongue tied and babbling on. She held my hand to her heart and asked my name.
Nic Lawson Jealous
In 1975 My boyfriend gave me this vynile. Since we are united by music
I took mine from my sister.
Beautifully said.......
I`m so bloody old now that I can admit to buying Horses a couple of years after it was released. Still listen to it now, all these years later. What a beautiful soul Pattie is, my favourite artist!
I prayed as that lighting attacked that somethin' would make it go crack
That line always stays with you...right?
@allidock11 I know EXACTLY what she means, but what a way to put it!
the other one:
"the whole sea lurches at my knees like flame and I feel like some misplaced Joan of Arc and the cause is you, looking up at me."
Sa Türk yok mu Türk?
Fuck I can't get enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this will always be my song for my Amber
totally full
The hand that rocks the cradle?
@MrCool Mug I agree. You can hear Patti Smith's influence in that song. Morrissey named Horses his favourite album.
+MrCool Mug Yes, you can hear it. And also somewhere I read that Morrissey or Marr acknowledge it
@Francesco Benati
They took influence from an early Elvis Presley song too, called Latest Flame. This influence is found in Rusholme Ruffians.
@*****
Cuz'izfuckin'true!
Yep, Morrissey and Marr took some inspiration from this tune. It's fitting, since the first time they met each other was at a Patti Smith concert.
and yet another plus as always
thanks for sharing, pleasantly

giuliano feletto Break it up.
Actually, on the album cover photo above her left hand is changing during the song... - am I the only one having noticed that? Looks quite scary. (Is this a secret message or just a problem with my PC?)
Yes, I thought I was having a flashback.
lol it's not just her hand the entire image is being constantly warped, elongated and then compressed (not sure what the technical term would be), but it is pretty trippy.
Queer -Streifen me too don't worry!
Holy crap , thought i was losing it . THanks ...
Happy Birthday,
Little Ruzgar,
I bless you with a good day.

I feel graced and blessed to have had Allen Lanier write the music to a song about me. Now this song will take on a whole new meaning for me. I am very sad about losing him from this world, but in my mind & heart, I know he is free of earthly pain & difficulties. <3
Kimberly Smith are you THE kimberly?!
RIP Allen Lanier, Patti's ex and co-writer of this song.
I heard to this song a while ago but I didn't no it was called Kimberly until now
Why are idiots talking about the government here? Listen to the music.
I'm sorry if my English isn't perfect but you know... I am not a mothertongue (and no, my friend is Scottish). What was wrong with my sentence so that I can learn? Now, I don't think that a British is less prepared to listen to this music and understand it. Also, every single lyrics that I checked confirm my words, unfortunately I can't find an official Patti Smith site with lyrics. So, peace, just enjoy the music, this wonderful music. You will sing it in your way, I will do it in my way. :-)
Ron Paul? He's a total fraud. He claims to be against government, but he collects a government check for being a congressman, and he collects a social security check. He was asked why he doesn't refuse to accept his social security check if he is against it, he didn't know what to say. He only against government checks for anyone other than himself. Just like the tea party frauds who are anti government health care except for their medicare benefits. Liberty movement? Just selfish frauds.
She has a sister named Kimberly, but she wasn't born handicapped. Her sister appears in a video with her singing at a concert a few years back, and she isn't handicapped at all; in fact, she looks more normal than Patti.
Patti Smith had a baby and gave it up for adoption when she was a teenager. I always thought this song was named for her little sister but it is really about her feelings about her baby she gave up for adoption. But I'm just guessing. I really don't know for sure.
Continued reply:
But just to make sure, my ex-roommate lives right next door to Patti Smith in New York City so I'll try to ask Patti personally if I see her next time I go to New York and stay with my old roommate in Soho.
So let me guess - your English speaking friend is from England, right? Don't you know that those people can't speak or understand New Jersey English? You have a lot to learn about English as mothertongue, Sorry.
An English mothertongue listen to this music and confirmed the lyrics, did they? You should ask them to help you with your English because that sentence contains so many errors in terms of grammar and syntax that it is nearly incomprehensible.
I don't know where your English mothertongue friend comes from, but I grew up in a town that's less then 20 miles from the town where Patti Smith grew up, so I am going to guess that I know a South Jersey accent better your friend.
Hmm... actually no, an english mothertongue listen to this music and confirmed the lyrics. Sorry... :-)
You got the words wrong - it's:
It was dawn in the storm settled in my belly,
in the road, in the grass, and the spit of the gas,
and I lit a match and the void went flash...
Mike Smith your wrong it’s AND I ROLLED IN THR GRASS
into your loving voice patti, oh oh oh oh oh into your loving mind baby oh oh oh oh oh
The Smiths brought me here. Their song 'The Hand That Rocks The Cradle' is a tribute to this song. Both excellent pieces.
A poet she is ... I don't know why she was considered punk.
She didn't sound at all like the other punk artists of her time.
IMO, Her lyrics have a beatnik vibe
Smith wrote this song with Blue Oyster Cult keyboardist Allen Lanier.
This is secretly the best song on this album :D
She really does have a sister called Kimberly, who was born severely handicapped, and that is what the song is about. Cheers.
Lame maybe, but I was merely indicating that I wouldn't minding having a wee cuddle with a cutie. What has that got to do with house prices? And I like living in this rat hole - life is what you make it.
Me first!
Actually she is talking about her sister, and one can love one's sister without it being incestuous! Wish I had had such a beautiful, cool and loving older sister :)
So what was I "wrong" about? You don't even refer to any of the things I was talking about! And one day you will be old too, if you aren't already. Lucky you seeing her back in the day, but I love seeing her shows now, and I still think she is "super-hot", in any sense of the word. You don't have to share my opinion.
I don't think Patti is particularly rich. She never sold many records, and she took time off to take care of her own kids, then had to start recording/touring again to support them after her husband passed. I love that she is a regular mom like me; she is a very strong person and a great role model. And beautiful too <3
And I prayer as that lighting attacked that something would make it go crack! Wow what a way to put it!!!!
IM KIMBERLY TOOO :)
im kimberly!!!!
@marghe239 i feel the same way! shivers! and my name is kimberley smith also.so proud of that!
Everytime I listen to this song, I become very happy that my parents named me Kimberly. Love this song!
if you listen to the typicall 1975-1976 music, youll understand how unique she was in the view
"Oh baby, I remember when you were born,
It was dawn and the storm settled in my belly
And I rolled in the grass and I spit out the gas
And I lit a match and the void went flash
And the sky split and the planets hit,
Balls of jade dropped and existence stopped, stopped, stop, stop."
I have shivers every time I listen to this piece... and I have to sing it out loud!
Perfect. This is what I hear her say. Point is that she is hard to understand by English speakers.
I always thought she was saying instead of "balls of jade dropped", I thought it was "'course the chain dropped".
Also she uses different words every time she sings the same song. Usually leaves out the best ones!
LOVE IT
Love u Patti
"Ah, here I stand again in this old 'lectric whirlwind" - i just love the way she says this line.
WOW! Hell Yeah! Love Patti Smith! Listening to a lot of Patti, Blondie, Hey You!, Madonna, and No Doubt!. We need more rockin' girls in 2011 !!!!!...

it is about her sister, kimberly.

Another great number from Patti. Super trippy picture!!
for the earlier poster the box set is here

The greatest rock band ever. So pure. So strong.
@fudwithacamera Plus, Patti Smith is known as a proponent of punk. She paved the way for women in music and challenged current societal norms especially in regard to gender. If you can't appreciate her music, maybe you can at the very least appreciate the role she played in bringing women's issues to the forefront
@fudwithacamera For shame. I hope you never teach my child. I am in university to become a teacher because I love children. I hope to foster creativity. If I ever become so condescending as to quash the creativity of my students then I will take it upon myself to quit, because it is my job to help students feel accepted and validated. By ridiculing your students you are showing a lack of respect. Do yourself a favour and go find a new career. Stop ruining kids' lives.
She'a a poet, a goddess & an enigma.
@fudwithacamera
Top 5 worst Youtube comments ever.
@fudwithacamera
You know nothing about music. Just because you think it's cool to listen to "oldies" doesn't mean you know what you're talking about. If you've never heard of Patti Smith, don't comment. SMH...
@transparentknife
Bob Dylan can't sing? WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?! You're just as wrong as fudwithacamera... wow.
@fudwithacamera keep in mind she was VERY young when she recorded this, try to listen to later stuff like Because of the night and tell me if she can't sing...!
Now...I am a MASSIVE Nirvana fan...Kurt was a punk rock poet...I have literally just listened to a couple of dear Patti's songs...just now for the first time..I must say...she is amazing...I love her already...also...I have only found two people that have done respectful and brilliant covers of Nirvana songs. One was Corey Taylor (the lead singer of Slipknot who done an acoustic set at Sonisphere festival...he played polly and it was beautiful...Number two is dear Patti here...
"The sky will split and the planets will shift,
The balls of jade will drop and existence will stop..."
Beautiful song, great lyrics. Patti is a real poet.
@whothehellgivesadamn have you listened to dylan's last few records? considering he's 70 they are pretty impressive.
she's awesome!!
@lordjoaopaulo

@royalnash it sounds like something girls will sing while jumping rope or one of those hand games.
Hahahaha! Awsome video! haha
weard moving pic
I adore this song
The one and only Patti Smith !!
Love it !
This video looks funny if you rewind it back on for really fast.
Holy shit hahaha, I thought I was high with the screen stretching.
less than the gods
This album was an epiphany for me. I never listened to music the same way again. Most important and influential album of the seventies? Probably
It's about her younger sister actually.
I bet she has a stinky cooter
