Smith, Patti - After The Gold Rush Lyrics

Well, I dreamed I saw the knights
In armor coming,
Saying something about a queen.
There were peasants singing and
Drummers drumming
And the archer split the tree.
There was a fanfare blowing
To the sun
That was floating on the breeze.
Look at Mother Nature on the run
In the nineteen seventies.
Look at Mother Nature on the run
In the nineteen seventies.

I was lying in a burned out basement
With the full moon in my eyes.
I was hoping for replacement
When the sun burst thru the sky.
There was a band playing in my head
And I felt like getting high.
I was thinking about what a
Friend had said
I was hoping it was a lie.
Thinking about what a
Friend had said
I was hoping it was a lie.

Well, I dreamed I saw the silver
Space ships flying
In the yellow haze of the sun,
There were children crying
And colors flying
All around the chosen ones.
All in a dream, all in a dream
The loading had begun.
They were flying Mother Nature's
Silver seed to a new home in the sun.
Flying Mother Nature's

Smith, Patti After The Gold Rush Comments
  1. H.... ....

My wife saw her tonight in SF for City Arts and Lectures. She played this and three others after the interview. Yeah Patti you are wonderful.

  2. M.... M....

Saw her sing this last night at Lisner Auditorium at the GWU campus while on her book tour for Year of the Monkey-fantastic!

  3. J.... G....

For Patti Smith: When ships break through the yellow haze to save us from ourselves, you’ll be floated up and sailing through stars with the Silver Seed. I love you. Thank you for the great feelings you gave me through my life with your artistry.

  4. J.... ....

    *This man's version is terrible.*

  5. M.... L....

And that's in the Rick and Roll Hall if Fame? Ugh

  6. d.... c....

Wow - Found this incredibly moving!

  7. i.... ....

    What a voice!

  8. M.... F....

She left out the middle verse, but the part she is was perfect to the original. A lot of people get the plurals and singulars wrong in the last verse. People change "colours" to 'banners" so Americans will understand it, I guess.

  9. J.... C....

  11. I.... D....

Patti gets it! As well as Neil did. She sounds like Stevie Nicks!

    I.... D....

*You're off your rocker! She WISHES she could sound that good! Stevie Nicks was, is & always will be the Fairy Godmother of Rock & Roll & there will NEVER be anyone else who could even come close to her beauty & talent!*

    I.... D....

I love Patti, she's epic with this cover... But she doesn't sound like Stevie Nicks at all.

  12. B.... L....

Have always thought this song was originally set in WWI. "Look at mother nature on the run in 1917". Ties in much better with "Lieing in a burned out basement" & "hoping for a replacement".

  13. n.... ....

Great cover, and the compilation of photos in the video are a bonus!

  14. D.... L....

    Powerful lyrics

  15. J.... H....

dolly parton, Emmylou harris &  linda  Ronstadt  also do  a great  cover of this song!!!

    J.... H....

*Linda, Emmylou & Dolly's version is hands down the best there is! Their harmonies are magic!*

  16. W.... T....

Pats. Ain't nobody like you on Earth. Such courage. Fierce, beautiful creature, you give me strength everyday. xxoo

  17. t.... f....

just listened to nana maskouri, kdlang, now this rendition. seems fitting for kdlang to have covered this being canadian in respect of neil young. nana maskouri's gets my vote because of no music and the harmonies, but patti smith gets my stamp for 'because the night' springsteen? and kdlang for orbison's classics.

  18. J.... I....

La gran Sra Smith ataca de nuevo.Un grande este penúltimo cd.

  19. B.... D....

I like Patti Smith a lot but personally I don't care for this cover, it lacks intensity.

  20. J.... E....

    Good version

  21. C.... H....

Un milliard de like s et je suis d accord avec Thomas Petsas merci Patti

  22. 1.... ....

Talk about polar opposite vocals - Neil Young and Patti Smith. Interesting.

  23. b.... ....

Great Cover of a class song

  24. T.... ....

So who did murder Osama, if it wasn't the guy with a very similar name? Or is he excused because he was the other side of the world supposedly watching it live on TV via Headcam?. Or perhaps you think it was the guy Wearing the Headcam? (see old comments now not reply-able to). Let's all face up to it, none of these people are exactly Innocents. American Justice!. it's a contradiction of terms.

  25. S.... J....

would appreciate it if y'all could check out my cover of After the Gold Rush on my channel!

  26. N.... ....

    merci beaucoup

  27. K.... P....

She leaves out the second verse of the original... I wonder why?

  28. c.... p....

I just got the album today, pure class, a haunting work... and this... such a beautiful and heartfelt version.

  29. H.... W....

this song comes into my soul like a shot

  30. S.... ....

    Just wonderful

  31. t.... p....

considering their different up bringing, they must've gone through the same shit, but i prefer Patti, maybe not as pretty as Marianne but definitely more beautiful

  32. r.... ....

    No it's not just you.

  33. M.... M....

It's a beautiful way to start listening to all the voices that have something honest to say.//Es una hermosa manera de comenzar a escuchar todas las voces que tienen algo sincero que decir.

  34. C.... L....

beautiful............ thanks for this!! got a soft spot for her. Not really into female vocalists, but my dead brother got me into her.....

  35. t.... ....

already happened - see watch =J8VUolqWr8U

  36. T.... W....

Patti Smith and Thom Yorke do Neil Young proud on their covers of this song!

  37. S.... ....

I believe that Neil would like this version. Nice one Patti

  38. t.... p....

Marianne faithful & Patti sound very similar here don't you think,or is it just me

  39. r.... ....

I gave this a plus, but whenever I hear a Neil Young tune, I can only hear Neil singing it. His voice is imprinted in my mind. The children's chorus is a good addition.

  40. P.... ....

No! Patti is no female version of anybody. She is a beutiful human being.

  41. E.... B....

    brilliant

  42. L.... H....

GRANDE PATTI SMITH INESQUECIVEL, FORTE< GENIAL....

  43. R.... K....

Patti Smith is a brilliant poet. This is a cover song. She's listed in the American Poetry Anthology, right next to . . .

  44. L.... ....

Whoa! I fell asleep. Was someone singing? Coma inspiring reheated 1970s dirge. I'm really disappointed, I expected her to kick it. Heroin is one hella drug.

  45. d.... ....

I still think "Prelude" did the best cover of this song.....and all in a cappella. Listening to this version I can't help picturing E.T. singing it while pointing to the sky with his light bulb finger while all his little kid friends surround him singing it too.....

  46. D.... V....

i saw them in philly..was amazing

  47. C.... ....

Actually just started listening and she says 1970s in the first part anyway...

  48. C.... ....

Neil did that before she did.

  49. c.... g....

patti opened a few shows for neil young and crazy horse this past fall

  50. D.... S....

i like how she changed the lyrics to "in the 21st century"

  51. F.... F....

    Bellissima versione, brava Patti !!!

  52. r.... ....

    Book of revelations

  53. L.... ....

I thought the song was ok until I heard the ending

  54. t.... ....

Just outstanding as usual, lovely woman.

  55. o.... a....

magic…always magic…two people who continue to melt me…Patti Smith and Neil Young….this is a blessing.

  56. 4.... ....

I'm so looking forward to seeing her with Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and The Sadies in Montreal on Friday Nov. 23. Haven't seen her live in almost 40 years!

  57. k.... k....

very sad song. I wanna understand the meaning of this song lyric.

  58. t.... L....

    at 0.56, mick jagger attitude!

  63. r.... ....

patti smith queen in the rock pantheon forever!

  64. J.... N....

What a great tune .Patti Smith does this song in my mind justice

  65. D.... A....

Patti is an artist that if you were to paint a picture of her you would need to use all the colors.

  66. A.... ....

    pure magic

  67. m.... ....

WHAT I MEANT TO SAY, IS, HER COVER SONGS ARE THE BEST, IN THE WORLD OF COVER VERSIONS, WHILST PATTI' S ORIGINAL STUFF, WILL ROCK FOREVER.

  68. m.... ....

I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO PATTI' S SHOW TOMORROW NIGHT IN GLASGOW. THERE WILL BE GOOSEBUMPS AND TEARS WHEN/IF SHE PERFORMS THIS. HER COVER SONGS ARE THE BEST, THE CD, TWELVE, JUST SOUNDS FANTASTIC, FROM START TO FINISH.

  69. r.... ....

I guess you had to be there.

  70. B.... K....

This is the song I thought of when NBC mistakenly said Neil Young had died instead of Neil Armstrong.

  71. P.... B....

this is so beautiful. theres something about Patti Smith, all the covers she does seem to be equal to the originals and in some cases better! she is amazing

  72. W.... ....

I love the children's voices in this cover.

  73. 7.... ....

Great. When some of the stature of Patti Smith covers work by people of equal stature; e.g. Neil Young, Hendrix and Nirvana (there I've said it, Nirvana) it can only be good can't it? A good song isn't easy to fuck up even in the hands of lesser talents!
If you enjoyed this try listening to Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt's treatment of this one. It's like a hymn, wonderful.
    Regards R.M.

  74. N.... ....

Makes me cry, the finish. "Granny Smith" and the Children. Bless U Patti Smith, Lenny Kaye, and musicians. Let us all do what we can to transform our ways and help save our Peoples and Preserve Mother Gaia!!!!

  75. J.... C....

I don't prefer her voice. But something about it....

  76. D.... P....

    So beautiful Patti...I love it!...love ~Desiree Ann~

  77. l.... ....
