My wife saw her tonight in SF for City Arts and Lectures. She played this and three others after the interview. Yeah Patti you are wonderful.

Saw her sing this last night at Lisner Auditorium at the GWU campus while on her book tour for Year of the Monkey-fantastic!

What a voice!

She left out the middle verse, but the part she is was perfect to the original. A lot of people get the plurals and singulars wrong in the last verse. People change "colours" to 'banners" so Americans will understand it, I guess.

I love Patti, she's epic with this cover... But she doesn't sound like Stevie Nicks at all.

Have always thought this song was originally set in WWI. "Look at mother nature on the run in 1917". Ties in much better with "Lieing in a burned out basement" & "hoping for a replacement".

just listened to nana maskouri, kdlang, now this rendition. seems fitting for kdlang to have covered this being canadian in respect of neil young. nana maskouri's gets my vote because of no music and the harmonies, but patti smith gets my stamp for 'because the night' springsteen? and kdlang for orbison's classics.

So who did murder Osama, if it wasn't the guy with a very similar name? Or is he excused because he was the other side of the world supposedly watching it live on TV via Headcam?. I gave this a plus, but whenever I hear a Neil Young tune, I can only hear Neil singing it. His voice is imprinted in my mind. The children's chorus is a good addition.

I still think "Prelude" did the best cover of this song.....and all in a cappella. Listening to this version I can't help picturing E.T. singing it while pointing to the sky with his light bulb finger while all his little kid friends surround him singing it too.....

Great. When some of the stature of Patti Smith covers work by people of equal stature; e.g. Neil Young, Hendrix and Nirvana (there I've said it, Nirvana) it can only be good can't it? A good song isn't easy to fuck up even in the hands of lesser talents!
If you enjoyed this try listening to Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt's treatment of this one. It's like a hymn, wonderful.
