Smith, Elliott - Can't Make A Sound Lyrics

I have become a silent movie
The hero killed the clown
Can't make a sound
Can't make a sound
Can't make a sound
Nobody knows what he's doing
Still hanging around
Can't make a sound
Can't make a sound
Can't make a sound
Can't make a sound
The slow motion moves me
The monologue means nothing to me
Bored in the role, but he can't stop
Standing up to sit back down
Or lose the one thing found
Spinning the world like a toy top
'Til there's a ghost in every town
Can't make a sound
Can't make a sound
Can't make a sound
Can't make a sound
Eyes locked and shining
Can't you tell me what's happening?
Why should you want any other
When you're a world within a world?
Why should you want any other
When you're a world within a world?
Why should you want any other
When you're a world within a world?
Why should you want any other
When you're a world within a world?

16 thumbs down? Guess these people either don't like good music or they don't like being able to get from youtube.

"Eyes locked & shining, can't you tell me what's happening?" 😯😥

Elliot’s music does the same thing the Smiths did to me. Melancholy/sad/depressive/ lyrics that once combined with the music gives me strength.

  10. R.... M....

This song is, plain and simply, a melancholic masterpiece. Stirring up emotions of levity yet sorrow leads the way.

The first song to make me cry. I'm crying and I'm loving it. I miss you, Elliott. RIP

One thing that really distinguishes Elliott from most other music artists is that he is one of the few to incorporate real emotions into the lyrics of his music. The lyrics to this song and all of his others have a hidden meaning. This is one of the things that so brilliantly keeps me listening. Also, both of my parents (especially my dad) listened to Elliott's music constantly. I was raised by his music. Not only does it bring back old memories, but it creates new ones as well. Elliott is his poet. His lyrics are impressively well-thought-out. And last but not least, his music sounds good, too. Figure 8 is my favorite era of his music because I really like the harmony of the instruments together and the instruments he uses and the aesthetic he creates. It's all so beautiful and depressing. Elliott definitely deserved more praise than he was credited for, but part of me also wants his music to be my little secret. Nevertheless, I have completely fallen in love with the sound of his music. This man was a musical genius with very little recognition whatsoever. I have been listening to Elliot Smith's music my entire life up to this point and will continue to for the rest of my days.

How old are you? Just wondered. I love this beautiful comment. I am wondering if your parents are my own age/Elliott's general age. I was on your when he was playing across the street from my show- I never got the chance to see him play. The way you worded this is so moving to me. I wish I was able to do such justice to Elliott Smith and I would be honored to have a child who feels this way about the shy but funny stranger who shared a couple of cigarettes and a half hour between our load in and sound checks... His music ended up being a lot of what saved my life a decade later (I have images of lyrics tattooed on my arms). I hope you are going to be a writer in your own future plans because you've got the gift for it.

@TMI from the Cringeworthy Oversharing Lounge By using the information of the comment:

Listened to ES in childhood, so can't be really older than 35 and younger than 25. Fav album is Figure 8 and ES got popular in 1998, so it's quite appropriate to assume that that person started listening to ES as kid around 1998 (could also be earlier) and remembers Figure 8 best, maybe was a teen by then. My guess is that the person was born in 1988, was 10 years old in 1998 and 12 or 13 when Figure 8 came out.

My final guess is that the person is 31.

This song gives me the strength to do wt I need to

Here's my version: I have become a head of depression
    The blood was all around
    We've lost a sound we've lost a sound we've lost a sound
    Somebody knew why this happened
Bags of drugs were on the rug
    We've lost a sound we've lost a sound we've lost a sound we've lost a sound
The slow tape pollutes me a monologue will always commit me
Cries in his room still he buys more
Sniff or snort inhale or breathe will always cough and wheeze
Spending his life on some heroin till his misery is found
    We've lost a sound we've lost a sound we've lost a sound we've lost a sound
Eyes X'ed and closed suicidal thoughts I suppose
Why should he want any other when he's a drug within a drug?
Why should he want any other when he's a drug within a drug?
Why should he want any other when he's a drug within a drug?
Why should he want any other when he's a drug within a drug? We've lost a sound
Oh yeah oooooo oooooo when he's a drug within a drug we've lost a sound
Oh yeah oooooo oooooo when he's a drug within a drug we've lost a sound
Oooooooo ooooooooooooo when he's a drug within a drug we've lost a sound

    Thank you!

hello, thanx a lot for the chord sheet!!! Good job. Just found a little mistake - there is no C/G - it´s always a Cmaj7 (or Em/C) ... and in the third verse you wrote an A instead of Am. I felt free to correct it. Greetings!

RIP Elliott. Your music speaks to me like no other.

  22. C.... A....

love when the electric guitar and piano horn thing come in.

    C.... A....

Chris Atkeson I like the strings sweeping leading up to the guitar, and then the guitar. Man this song is so good. I don't think its horns. I think you're hearing Elliott harmonizing with himself. Or a keyboard.

    C.... A....

that sounds like a kind of food

This song makes me hurt. Elliotts music is bittersweet. For some reason, even though I hurt, I can never stop listening to him. I tried. Things got bad because I listened to Either/Or one day and wasn't in a good place in my mind that day. Not blaming Elliott, but it was a direct cause of his lyrics and my instability at the time. His words cut deep. Make me feel all sorts of ways. I'm addicted to his music, that's for damn sure. Love you, Elliott. Slap a star for me. I know you're out there somewhere, floating around writing songs on a space organ or some shit.

    T.... H....

Slap a star.... Can I use that as a lyric? Seriously.

    T.... H....

Your not alone buddy, just know that.

    @Natalie Johnson ditto.....

Thomas Hendon, I feel less like a freak after reading this. Thank you.

maybe its the music trying to tell you something about yourself; just like a bad trip, but at the end something learned.
