Smashing Pumpkins - Violet Rays Lyrics

Faithless moors
Pulling up your oars
From rivers I have crossed
In magic no heart's lost
And I'll leave with anyone this night
And I'll kiss anyone tonight
Am I the only one you see?
Raised from the path of revelry

Spells fall frail
Webs catching sail
In eternal eternities
Divine purpose catching free
And I'll leave with anyone this night
And I'll kiss anyone tonight
Am I the only one you see?
Seized from the wrath of revelry
Am I the only one you see?

Does love matter when loves the actor
For what you are after is me
Babe, don't leave me, please believe me
'Cause I'm so easy to know
Am I the only one you see?
Raised from the path of revelry
Am I the only one you see?

  11. Calin Petrescu

I think this song deserves a proper video. It is one of their most beautiful ones. No question about that in my heart!

  12. John Taylor

I like when Billy dials back the distortion slightly. Sometimes his tone gets lost when it’s too heavy.

    Clinton Gfroerer

John Taylor first time listening to this song and I was thinking the same.

  13. cdreyes81

I love the synth opening. Reminds me of the cover of the album

  14. D Wood

    Yaaaaaasssss!!!!

  15. NosferatuNite

Does anyone else agree if this album had two classic artsy pumpkins music videos for Panopticon and The Celestials this would have had a lot more success in this day and age of music and the internet? I'm literally shocked this didn't become a massive hit album. I reckon maybe Billy lost a lot of his fans for being too outspoken and also the musical landscape in the mainstream has changed so much. But I'm surprised it' didn't find a new audience. if this album was released in the late 90s, or was released before zeitgeist it would have been more successful

    DarkRendarius

I think its more the change in times and current musical trends.... And the major factor of his largest number of fans being unaware of the release.... due to family, work, and al the BS life has us dealing with, and prevents many from knowing, searching, or caring about their old music and love of it.... = (
Ive gone through periods like this myself, and I am a musician...
Im SO DAMN glad I was doing whatever I needed to be doing to be aware of this album an Billy still writing and releasing music...
But Im sure you are right too and he might have lost fans, but Id assume its a smaller number than those that are just lost in their lives and other commitments for their time, and focus.... ts kinda sad honestly... Life and what it entails for most....

    werideatdusk

They made a bunch of videos for the far shittier next album monuments to an elephant and no one cared

    Anthony

    I second this.

    Patrick Decker

This is one of the best albums for the 2010s and one of the best by the pumpkins so with the right promotion it would’ve been much bigger

    Aaron RM

@werideatdusk monuments to an elephant lmao

  16. Thomas Ramquist

    I melted....again.

  17. Ilse Carolina Vazquez Maldonado

    this feels like 90's!

  18. Jay Shepherd

I bet a non-synth version of this album would be even more amazing.

    spoon

I thought the synth sounded awesome in this

Communism Works Because I Say It Does

Jay Shepherd the synth is unique to this album. Taking away a key feature is dangerous

    werideatdusk

This is still a guitar and drum driven song. The synths have been on every SP release since MCIS

  19. truemansparks

This album seems to divide opinion amongst fans i think it is beautiful

    amaxamon

@daid man Be sure to listen to other kinds of music too: classical, jazz, blues, folk, opera etc. Even if it's not your thing, get to know more than just rock! If you like this you should check out some classic progressive rock like RUSH, early Genesis, Yes and King Crimson :)

    daid man

@amaxamon i actually have been meaning to check King Crimson out, since my friend recommended it.
For music outside of rock, i like Kero Kero Bonito, a british-japanese electronic/dreamy pop band. (Though i guess they have some rock influence on their latest record) And kendrick lamar who im sure youve heard of! I do plan to check out more tho

    amaxamon

@daid man I've never heard of either! Have fun exploring music, I used to love rummaging through used record stores & hunting things down, great memories!

    daid man

@amaxamon i definitely will. Spotify and youtube are great places to find new music!
Also, kendrick lamar is a rapper who is known for his lyricism and made one of the most critically acclaimed hip hop albums of the decade, "To Pimp A Butterfly."

    foxlight3

Because it takes something extra to listen on this level. There is something that is hard to explain. It takes time and it grows into something just a bit deeper than even other Pumpkins music its crazy. I've seen it in other music before but nothing like this, for me anyone.

  21. ThePsychedelicCinema

Damn, i fell in love with this CD when it first came out and it's only gotten better! Some of my favorite Pumpkins' songs on here

    foxlight3

I have found that I have started to prefer this newer music of theirs, of his. Like maybe the old music is for those old feelings, those old memories and this is for now. Its not better per se, but its amazing and it speaks to me, not the man or boy I was.

  22. moe, ,

when it lead into the chorus my whole body shut down from shock. It's freaking awesome!

  23. fuck Off

    gud stuff

  24. DJ São - Flash Back

  26. Keyser Soze

lucky enough to c jimmy on the zeitgiest tour v fest australia,.... and billy n co in 2012 for this album love it..... p.s the guy they had on drums was sik

  27. Malignant Astral Infestation

Hands down one of their best tracks yet. If it can top 1979, 33, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, and Rhinoceros instantly, it's a damn good track.

  28. cabrejos96

    Saw them live yesterday :)
    Happy birthday Billy!

    cabrejos96

Lima, Peru. They came with Kasabian as opening act and the audience sang happy birthday in between songs. Billy just laughed. Managed to get to the front. It was awsome!

    esau marquez

    that is awesome

  29. David T

First time I heard this song was at an apple store using beats headphones. An I will it was a experience I'll remember forever. Amazing song amazing drums

    DunkMcFunk

+D T Shame about the headphones you were listening to it on.

  30. TheDistorted

Sort of reminds me of Radiohead's Arpeggi/Weird Fishes.
One of the best from Oceania, for sure.

  31. Filip /athal

along with Pinwheels, the only good song on this album that does it for me

  32. Júlio Brandão

Primeira vez que escuto simplesmente magnifico como nunca ouvi antes...

  33. Shawn Mckenzie

true Pumkins Sound, no one else can match

    foxlight3

I bet the Highlander favors the Pumpkins too. If he hasn't lost his head already.

  34. Puppy Panda

I need to see you guys LIVE please, you are the last band of my top 3 bands that I haven't seen yet. Thank you for existing Smashing Pumpkins, you make the world a better place.

    SP ZER0_

Viewing Account Lol even though these comments are from over 2 years ago, I want to point out how funny it is that you kept saying how they weren't touring and no one wanted to see them, when in reality 2015 ended up proving to be great with two of their most popular tours in years; The In Plainsong Tour which was so well-recieved and sold out in many places that they did a second run of it in 2016, and the End Times Tour with Marilyn Manson which gave them both a ton of publicity. These comments are outdated, obviously, but Smashing Pumpkins are indeed still popular and many people do still want to see them live, as the sellings of their recent tours have shown. :)

    Viewing Account

@SP ZER0_ Watching Billy try to play Zero at Mountain View (or Concord) was enough for me. Manson was appearing even worse. They need their old lineup. Smack the crack pipe out of Darcys face come on now.

    SP ZER0_

Viewing Account True, Billy's voice isn't what it once was, but he can definitely still sing. Just look up the 2016 In Plainsong tour and you'll see he can still play a lot of great songs very well. Regarding the old band members, Jimmy Chamberlin has pretty much been their permanent drummer since 2015 and he is simply a beast on the drums. Also James Iha played a few songs with Billy on one date during that 2016 I.P. tour, and it was cool. Though to me, personally, the Pumpkins have always really been just Billy and Jimmy since Billy is the main singer, songwriter, guiarist etc. and even played most guitar and bass parts on the old records, and then Jimmy would always be a monster on drums. It was cool to see James play again, and it would be nice to see all the original members play together again, but I am definitely more than happy with Billy, Jimmy, and of course Jeff as he is a great guitarist as well. I do, however, wish they would just stick with one permanent bassist, as they always have a new one every tour.

    Viewing Account

He cant hit the harmonics to his most popular song dude.

    Puppy Panda

I'm happy to report I got to see them (well, Billy - if you don't want to let the past go) that same year (2015) and while I have no other concerts I can compare it to having only seen them once, well it passed all my expectations, they played almost all my most favourite songs and I was literally in heaven and I am so FUCKING thankful I got to see "The Smashing Pumpkins" at least once and even though everyone was there only for Billy (and like he was the only one who took a bow and waved and was like the only person I watched on the stage the whole time) hey I'll take that as my memory of seeing one of my top 5 bands coz it was so fucking good and he could sing just as good as he does on the concert dvd's and I hope I'll be able to see "them" again one day, even if he's still the only guy from the original lineup, it is he who counts and Billy is a musical genius and I fucking love him so much and I love their music and I hope he keeps making it. It was magical.

  35. Fher Morales

    450 plays cuz of me.
    THX OCD

  36. White-Noise-Machine

What a great song.. So much substance.

    he's amazing live

  44. jediscot411

  45. FollyxXxFallen

This song is a real stand-out on this album in my opinion.

  46. Ariel D

    1º Violet Rays
    2º My love is winter
    3º The Celestials

I really love this song, but i don't like that much this album...

    foxlight3

OMG I can't even do that. I'm maybe just too overwhelmed right now. People throw around genius too much, this album is there. Deep emotional shit, being this sort of person in a sea of something else and bumping into THIS again, remembering something I can't even describe and words NEVER elude me. IDK if i'm having a fucking emotional seizure or something

  47. Silent Symposium

He's a genius kid with large potential but too soon to be compared with Jimmy.
Jimmy Chamberlin is another level on the list along with rock and roll drums gods.

  48. metman18

I can't pinpoint what I like about the drumming, but it's one of my favorite parts of the song. It's simple, but very effective.

  49. Mau Miguel

Sem sobra de dúvidas vc conquistou o Brasil Billy *----* linda musica!!!

  50. Hezza chan

One of my favorite songs from this album. William is a genius. ;)

  51. Mia A

    Love this song.

  52. DejanGrahovac

There are few people that can capture emotion and turn it into music. I personally know some of them, but i hope to meet Billy also.

  53. Ivan Borcin

the drummer is amazing, I dare to say that better than Jimmy

  54. Francesca Sugarpills

I'm so sad they didn't play live this and The Celestials in Rome this year :(
    But I met Billy :)

  55. Hal Kits

    really great song.

  56. The Guitar Whisperer

    Great song! Love it.

  57. Michael Boissonneault

  58. StephenAndrew777

  59. aadore33

I think it's awesome how he kinda re-invented it bands have to change to nothing stays the same....look at tom petty Robert plants new stuff that's coming out it's great but does it ever get played? No. People just want to stay teenagers forever

  60. brody027

    Album sucks, sounds bland.

  61. Rober Rojas

Bienvenido! Que buen material! Ya se Los extrañaba... Muy buena atmósfera, arreglos y melodías impecables!,,,,!

  62. Stacy Ann Young

This really is a wonderful song... prob my favorite on the album.... gets played on repeat a lot.

  63. Modern Mouse

They weren't going for the same sound as the old albums. Check out some interviews..mainly billy on Howard Stern.

  64. prodottoinserie

    interesting

  65. john smith

    the best

  66. Rick Lloyd

Agree with Tyler, doesn't hit the same spot as old albums. Sounds song-writing, but a little tame.

  67. kynes333

I miss Chamberlin/Corgan combination...I have a similar experience. :( But billy, love your stuff... you have to keep your head down. ;)

  68. themightyfinbar

Album is the best effort from Billy since Machina / the machines of god. Just my opinion.....

  69. Joseph Adams

    great album i like it

  70. Silky Johnson

And before you say anything, I listened to this not to hate but to enjoy it. And, In my opinion, it's no where close to their best work. I don't know you so you may know more about music than me. But that doesn't give you the right to criticize me because I didn't like your song. Relax, and enjoy life. Have a nice day.

  71. Silky Johnson

And btw, who are you to judge me because I don't like this album. Chances are you didn't have anything to do with this album being made so why do you care so much. I don't understand people like you who get offended about something they never helped make, like it's their baby. Music is made so that you can relate to something. It may help you get through tough times, or maybe it's your own little soundtrack to your life. Whatever it is, you have the choice of listening to whatever you want.

  72. Silky Johnson

Well Like I said, my opinion. Just like in my opinion, I don't like the new Metallica albums. I prefer their older ones. I still will listen to it but it's not as good. I appreciate all types of music. But, I think they could have done better.

  73. Gwilow1

Good thing your opinion doesn't count apparently you don't know shit about music yet alone the whole career of TSP....!

  74. Silky Johnson

Yeah its okay, but it's not that great. In my opinion.

  75. Arnaldo Rivera

Woah..I'm in love with this song ...

  76. Klaus Vink Slott

At first it sounds like something I heard 100 times before, but when then drums kick in...Wow! This drummer really talented.

  77. Serena S

I'm going to see Smashing Pumpkins in Rome next month!

  78. appinone

  84. Nila Leslie

    I absolutely love this song!

  85. EmissionGeneration

=] I do miss Jimmy though, thats for sure.

  86. Stardoom

Zeitgeist is a great album. So is this one. Siamese is my favorite. Thats my opinion and your opinion doesnt matter to me. But Billy is smashing pumpkins, and thats a fact.

  87. Katie A

idk I was in Cali listening to Howard Stern and he played this song and it was just so fucking perfect for the time and everything. I have loved it ever since then.

  88. Jorge Pablo Albert López

The musical journalists have talked very vell about this album, I´ m a spaniard pumpkins fan and It is very surprising. In my country always have received negative critics. This is a fantastic song, a masterpiece.

  89. Matt Matt

Uh, Siamese Dream occupies a place in the music hall of fame. It is a masterpiece. If you can't recognize that then you have a truly different taste in music.

  90. Andrew D

im not sure its the best, but tied for it, cause there was rush's clockwork angles, keep rocking in a pop world and re-make this world what it was in the 70s, 80s and 90s!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  91. cramthe man

    Beautiful..

  92. Aaron

Probably my second choice for best song... Good choice man :)

  93. MojoStrummer

I personally like celestials the best

  94. Regino Lopez

Lol, I get what you're trying to say. But nah, there's a reason why Mellon Collies and Siamese Dream are in the top 500 greatest albums of all time. This album still rocks though.

  95. xgothax

This is definitely my favourite song of this album. So artistically beautiful... Billy Corgan always impresses me :)
