Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 Lyrics

Shakedown 1979
Cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet

Junebug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end to it all

And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below

Double-cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in store
Morphine city slipping dues down to see

That we don't even care as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below

Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go
Beneath the sound of hope

Justine never knew the rules,
Hung down with the freaks and ghouls
No apologies ever need be made
I know you better than you fake it to see

That we don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below

The street heats the urgency of now
As you see there's no one around

Just think that 1979 was only 16 years ago from when this song was written and it has already been almost 25 years since this song was written.

  19. LLuís Alfons Farrés Ramos

90's nights...when you didn't know where your bones will rest and you didn't remember the girl you date next monday...no cell phones and what had happened that night was only in your buddies memories...great times!!!

  20. TotallyNotAliens

I’m still only one year into high school and this song makes me wish we were free like these kids were it’s upsetting that we’re not

  28. GlenfinnanForge

I was born in 1979. I didn't get my own cell phone till 2000, and it just made phone calls and sent basic texts. If you wanted to interact with friends you had two choices: phone call or IRL. I'm not saying we had it better, but it was real.

    LORD DO SHITPOST

    GlenfinnanForge

Oh, burn. Man you REALLY got me.

    Violenta Nostalgia !! 🌹

  41. Jack Of Shades

Makes a song about 79' in the 90s. Just goes to show. Anything before this era was good. Fact.

    Grev McGrevington

It is about people born in 1979, not about teens in 70s but teens in 90s

  42. derek davis

this makes me never wanna grow up, i’m 17 and i’ll never have these days again. i wish i was a teen in the 90s

    Drug Daddy

derek davis or go do something fun with your life instead of dreaming of being a teen in that era, teens are always going to be teens being alive in a different era isn’t going to change it.

    miko1975guitar

Nostalgia is always better than the real thing. The nineties were just like any other decade. Nothing special. Grow up in your own decade. In twenty years, you’ll be looking back on this decade thinking it was the greatest.

    Melissa Gray

Enjoy while it lasts. You don’t know you’re in the “good old days” until they’re over.

  43. pat c

What is it with people copying other peoples comments for likes on YT vids. Its a bit sad to be honest!! eg : " This song got me feeling nostalgia for memories that never even happened " dozens of variants of in thread. Pathetic liberal millenials me thinks

  44. Ed Rivera

not gonna lie....... this is my life anthem! !!

  52. Hemp Rope

It's ironic how everyone's discussing 90s nostalgia when this song is about 70s nostalgia and just happens to be made in the 90s

    Grev McGrevington

No, it is about people born in 1979 which has these years in the 90s.

    miezcom

@Grev McGrevington Billy Corgan was born in 67 and this song is about his youth. Hence the 70's muscle car that would've been worth a fortune in the '90s. You can also sort of tell the convenient store scene is more that time than '90s.

    Grev McGrevington

@miezcom he would’ve been 12 in 1979, and the convenience store looks 90s to me, look at the candid videos someone took at a 711 at 2am in the 90s. And the muscle cars are only affordable by teens in the 90s, not when they first come out in the 70s.

  53. Warta Marhaén

this song is the marker of the (great) times.

  54. DT W D TW

O god the 90s i want to go back. This decade fucking sucks.

  55. Back Country Pastimes

This song works o so many levels. Not only is the instrumentation and guitar work in particular amazing, but also the lyrics and the way they describe the fun and nostalgia of being young. Nostalgia is something we can all relate to, of how great the past is in our memories and nothing captures that feeling better than this song. This song gives me a childhood nostalgia and euphoria that few songs fully capture. Thank you Billy Corgan.

  56. Андрей М

Remember. 1998. A lifetime ago. I'm a schoolboy, we just got cable TV. Russia, North. There's some shit on the radio. Around is happening some nightmare. Small town, less than 25,000 people population. I turn on the TV, and there's Tonight, Tonight. I remember goose bumps running down my back. I am puzzled and surprised! What is it!?I ran to the only store where I could buy a cassette of some rock music. Found Adore. I could not even imagine that this music will accompany me all my life. Collected all albums, enjoyed. Even my grandmother was still alive, she survived the Second World War, and I blew her brain with this music... Oh, sorry, grandma! Billy, I'm an adult. Got a family, son. A lifetime behind him. There's so much going on. I know you'll never know, but I appreciate it. Thank you, man, I wish you all the best. Heartily.

    Dank Doritos

Humberto Santana jr people will say the same thing in 30 years, how do you think people born in the 60/70s reacted when classic rock wasn’t popular anymore or when teenagers started wearing different clothing
