Just now reading about this song in Kenney Jones's autobiography.
Fabulous. A hit song about a band's relationship with a like-minded drug dealer! The man in question[The Nice], was a certain Howard Marks, who by all accounts was a wonderful human being.
How do you know 'Nice' is reference to Marks? I thought they took it from the preacher substituting religion with methadrine... not Mr Nice
I don't know for sure is the honest answer. I do know Marks was the "go-to" dealer for bands in the "60s and he was well acquainted with Don Arden, the band's legendary manager. I guess only Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane know the full story, and they are long gone.
You are right. It is "polite". He deserves a lot worse. But comments are so often profane and tedious that I chose a different angle.

A wonderful time - if only for what it did to the ego. Gave you a sense of impending change. A Utopian lifestyle and society was just around the corner - borne on the wings of songs like this and groups like the 'Small Faces'. We were heading for 'Nirvana,'.....what went wrong?
