Sly & The Family Stone - Time Lyrics
TIME.
Needs another minute
(At least).
Take your TIME.
That girl looks forward To another meetin'.
Just like everydaypeoplelknow
Look forward to another simple greetin'.
TIME.
A bear in the woods looks
Forward to hibernatin'.
Just any ol' player you know
All he needs is a ratin'.
Even when they tell you
It's sophistication.
You know that TIME
Needs to be a little longer.
Oh TIME!
The universe needs to be a little stronger.
TIME they say is
The answer
But I don't believe it
TIME

He lost all his magic year later but this is one of most important track ever
18th bornday. House party, keg of beer and this CD is played . Life changing. At the end of the night the host gave me the CD. Classic
love this bitch
In 74 his magic vanished
So unfortunate that that advertisement for Saint Judes, is partially funded by a branch of the freemasons… You have to have a good public face in order to continue to make the public to leave you’re only the good guys…
OMG 4:13
Sly.He was smart to ditch the rest of the band.
There's a riot going on.
This song just showcases his genius
Sly was #Nasty!

"In Time" - THE Testament to the Singular Genius of Sly Stone.
,,feel so good I told leader how to follow,,
X Stacy Missy Elliot Brought me here 🤘
Sly's music is so complex and groundbreaking. Doesn't get enough credit imho. Then again, he walked away from it all. He's right up there with Stevie Wonder.
Instrumental and vocal arrangements alone on this tune: positive proof of the rare musical genius of Sly Stone.
Newmark's drumming on this song, as well as Mike Clark's drumming on Hancock's Actual Proof were the standard for syncopation during this era. They have stood the test of time as two of the greatest cuts ever recorded!
stuckinthe70s Maybe in YOUR opinion, but you don’t get to speak for the rest of us. I love The Family Stone’s music, and they produced some great tracks, but there’s an endless list of GREAT MUSIC out there that none of us could possibly listen to in a lifetime. So enjoy what you love, but skip the hyperbole.
I was born in '71 and was raised with the energy that fueled Sly to make this song and this vibe. The soul cant help but to be moved by this FUNK!!!
Jungle Brothas???
Why is there a "Thumbs down" logo on this page and who are the 90 or so dummies that were silly enough to show how much soul they had?
Bobby Pickett Has it never occurred to you that people don’t have to like everything you do, and that the “thumbs down” is there so that those people can express their opinions? It doesn’t make them “dummies” bc they don’t like this tune....they listened to it, and just don’t like it....big deal! Your comment makes you sound like an elitist narcissist....I’d rather be called all manner of “dummies” rather than that. Lighten up!
There's a Riot Going On!
Andy Newmark...smh, Lawd Hab Moursay !
Sly.Coltane.
that 6th note!
OMG THE FUNK IN THIS TUNE.
Had this album on 8 track when it came out in 1973. I was a sophomore in high school. ( I'm giving away my age!!! Lol!!) Rarely do l like every song on an album, but in this case, I must make an exception. I don't think "Fresh" got the critical acclaim that it was definitely worthy of.
A great big wonderful flash in the pan.
Sly leaves gaps open for the other cats to fill it in wit some Funk and the amalgamation is fuckin awesome
Facial Contortions & Headnods
Jason Society's
I'm really want to know what rapper sample this
It just doesn't get any funkier!
i dont know why he didnt put this out as a single back in the day this song i know would have been a hit
If you gave this a thumbs down you need a beating.
Josh Michael And people who say shit like that need an even BIGGER beating.
"I switched from coke to Pep, and I'm a connesueir"
Gone Sly!
Funky as fuck but with grown-up harmony!
Miles Davis salutes you. And so do I.
Funky 🎶🎧🎶2G/The 2nd Generation of Funk. 2k18.
7th Son
Not even close to being the greatest funk tune ever but it's good. I like the Maceo version better.
Really funny piece of music.
Listened to this 8 track every day in 1973. Awesome.
fresh is one of the greatest funk lp's of all time1
origina mix (THIS ) much better then remastered CD
once. again. there. it. is.
"Perfect funk is jazz" - George Clinton

The bass ahead of it time
how cute was this? 7-22-17!
one of their # 1 fans
ALWAYS AND FOREVER
@austin 78993: that's a good word for it. 5 min. and 48 sec. of sheer madness. That would be a fella from Boston (MA.) named Andy Newmark. There's a video on Youtube where Andy explains how he got the gig with Sly - it's pretty unbelievable, too - check it out. Andy has lived (and worked) in London for over 25 years now.
I have to make another comment. My last comment might of hit the nail on the head. Where can you go after perfect??? I mean yeah you can still play but so??? JIMMY
After you make a recording like this where is there to go???? i can listen to it over and over perfect! !! Jimmy Strassburg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=921kqkHOHDo
funkiest song ever. i told Sly I thought that and he said, "funny, Maceo said the same thing."
That's awesome that you got to meet and talk to Sly. That's on my bucket list to talk to Sly but time is growing short on that dream. Everyone is getting so much older.
maibe when you be ready to speak on your own name
John Mulrenan hahaha
DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS, this song ,not only for me but even for a GREATH MILES DAVIS show absolutely talent in poetic and musical way of one of the greatest performer OF OUR TIME. HIS ROYAL HIGHNEST SILVESTER SLY STONE .
Truest sounding band ever
I bought this in the cheap bin at record store 20 years ago. Was the best 5 dollars I think I ever spent in my life. This record is stellar.
This is definitely one of the most under-appreciated songs that he has ever made. It is one of the funkiest he ever made. If he would not have destroyed his own career, he would be more popular than George Clinton.
The Master of the Era still today
Musical Masterpiece delivered by an Unparalleled Genius.
Inn time ahead of it's time swear
One of the best intros I've ever heard
so funky...tight groove
Defined the funk. Beware of imitations.
there are no imitations only limitations.
I switched from pot to coke and my life became a disaster. Glad TIME renewed me. Stay around if you can and try to get clean my friend. In time things can get better as long as you're not quitter.
Gawsh this takes me back....
This is one of the best things I've ever heard.
Tell me about it Sly...
Miles Davis had his band members listen to this song over and over again because of how good he thought it was. Two Gods sharing inspirations.
not surprised
@Park Vale Music Department theoretically speaking maybe, but historically and literally speaking...no
That Says A Lot.
Hi, do you have the all story the facts. thx
J'adore
The opening riff sounds like it was played by a ten year old with a 12 inch shlong.
took the words right out of my mouth
hard to beat
Sounds like you know a lot about well endowed children
WOW, too much, Andy, Sly!!!!!
Everything about this song! I love the way the instruments play off each other
AWESOME song...Andy and Rustee killed it
Sly did the bass
No, Rustee Allen was credited for this song
Scott Henderson bought me here, courtesy of "Guitar Wank Podcast"!
Scott Henderson brought me here.
+EgyptianMinor Did you catch it on the guitarwank.com podcast?
+Cambodia69 Right on, mate. Great Podcast. Another one that I really dig is called I'd Hit That. Great drummers/bass players doing great interviews.
Anthony Kiedis brought me here.
he's good for something. just kidding...
not meaning scott henderson...
It also sounds great sped up to 1.5
...this is for me his best album...slowly cocked...ready to taste with all your senses...enjoy!!
+Jose Manuel Galvez Martin This is my favorite Sly and the Family Stone album. It's hard for me to call "Fresh" their best because, I can't decide between "Fresh", "There's a riot going on", and "Stand!"
I've been warming up to Small Talk. Not his best album, but the songs Small Talk, Loose Booty, and Time for Livin' are right up there with his best work
Right man
check this album!!! Fresh every cut is hip!!!!
somewhere you gotta say I've had enough, man he was awesome in his own time but put down the drugs sly you're in your 70's now man sly you got say it's over I'm cleaning up myself, it's cost you everything you have and keep on your life will be next
I agree "Greatest Funk Tune Ever!" I gotta learn this on my bass and start a funk band!
+Chill Dozer sorry bro, any bass player worth anything knows this tune as its a staple in clubs and gb bands!!
@coley22 Im Generation X and this is new to me. :-)
+coley22 This is an intense bass part...I doubt the average bass player knows it
@Jack Straw i know at least 50 that do!! Any bass player knows this and its not that intense, maybe to someone who has no pitch or feel but to a bass player this is pretty simple!!!
Coming from a musician who was at the sessions..Sly is on bass..
@solo2r nope it was greg.....i just got off the phone w him!!
Oh, Great to know! Thanks for the facts!
the song was recorded at the end of 72 w greg...he left and sly got mad at him and credited Andy but he never played on the recording as he didn't join the band until the end of 73
If that actually is him, it's very impressive
lol this is signature Andy Newmark drumming if I'm not mistaken
Heard recently Andy Newmark, the band's replacement for Gregg Errico, remark his "funk" drumming by informed by a technique employed by Tony Williams. This is noteworthy given what sets apart from other SntFS material certain material on Fresh is the jazz vibe. Coupled the jazz take on drumming for funk with stellar horn playing and IN TIME or FRISKY or IF YOU WANT ME TO STAY is material Miles Davis could had written if he knew more about pop music. Williams was drummer for the Miles Davis Quintet, possibly Davis's best band, including band w Coltrane.
+Ethan Hill Word! Actually, when Davis heard this cut he told his band "this is the direction we need to go" And you can really hear a strong Sly influence on about 4 or 5 of Miles songs. Then again, everyone was drawing from Sly for a period of time there. I think he´s the greatest composer of modern time, to include Gershwin. They won´t label Miles as a composer, which is sad. But that´s only opinion on sly. Food for thought.
Miles was introduced to Sly by Miles's wife, Betty Davis. She also introduced Miles to Jimi Hendrix.
Her own funk albums from the 70s are AMAZING! Sadly I only came across her music this past year.
Loved Everything They Did!
This song is in 4/4 time right?
no 13/7
yes 4/4 all the way, funk style, accents to max but still on the 1,2,3,4...
Thanks man. I only questioned myself on it because a friend who's a much better musician than me called it a jazzy odd meter. I'm fine with it being called jazzy, but I always got 4/4 when I counted it out.
Best Album of the 1970's. Amazing!
Tight, tight band. Horns fresh!
Kicking horn session !!!!!!.
Sickest intro ever...
FRESH is an uneven album and the beginning of the end; yet, it is better than you fill in the blank band that charted on CASHBOX or BILLBOARD album listing in 1973. IN TIME is a syncopated dream for drummers. Sadly the sonics are downhill from IN TIME and the slide continues with small talk. Again, however, the sonics still outdistance much if not all that charted in '73, release year of FRESH. In '75, release year of small talk, same may be said for it. SLY farts and it's more interesting than you fill in the blank band that charted....
Yeah. Small Talk has a couple winners though! The title track, Loose Booty, and Time for Livin' (with strings) are all pretty great
Lanois was right!
Here's what Wikipedia says about who's playing on the album:
Sly Stone: vocals, organ, guitar, bass guitar, piano, harmonica, and more
Freddie Stone: vocals, guitar
Rose Stone: vocals, piano, keyboard
Cynthia Robinson: trumpet
Jerry Martini: saxophone
Pat Rizzo: saxophone
Rusty Allen: bass guitar on "In Time", "Let Me Have it All", and "Keep On Dancin'"
Larry Graham: bass guitar on "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)" and "If It Were Left Up To Me" (uncredited)
Andy Newmark: drums
Little Sister (Vet Stone, Mary McCreary, Elva Mouton): vocals
I think you like track as I do, obscure and carries the original groove....john
Recorded at Record Plant Sausalito by Tom Flye
It started off vocally sounding like Prince. I see where Prince get that vocal style from
So many People are inspired with this great band. From all parts of the Planet.I am one of them....and all my friends also....
@Kenneth Beavers
I am in mourning for Prince. I'm a grown man and I cried when I heard. Most of the music played at my high school prom was Prince. I don't know how many time we danced to Little Red Corvette and 1999. All through my teens and 20s he produced the best funk-pop-soul-fusion going. Senseless. Tragic. Sad.
If you've ever heard sly's song Remember Who You Are, you'll know why that's responsible for one of Prince's best recordings ever
great song but he switched from coke to crack
+PhuckHue2 and ?
By FAR the best song on this album. If You Want Me to Stay is cool, but this is a classic!!!
I hate when the best song of an album is the first track!
Super Mighty FUNK!!!
Happy Birthday Sly Stone
thanks a bunch for that one dude! anyways.. I found your Creedence tapes.. you left them in my car after the last bowling tournament ^^
first time hearing it
