Sly & The Family Stone - Spaced Cowboy Lyrics

I can't say it more than once
'Cause I'm thinking twice as fast.
Yodel-ayde-a.

Everything I like is nice
That's why I try to have it twice.
Yodel-ayde-a [etc.]

Well once I saw a bore,
Who was a social whore.
Yodel-ayde-a.

And they said I had a limp
And then they tried to pass around I was a pimp.
Yodel-ayde-a [etc.]

Was on my last leg.
I couldn't even borrow my friend's extra peg at all.
Yodel-ayde-a.

Once I turned red
And it loohed funny in the head.
Yodel-ayde-a [etc.]

Sly & The Family Stone Spaced Cowboy Comments
  1. b.... ....

I can’t stop listening to this song! Three weeks straight. I might have a problem.

  2. D.... P....

This is both funky as hell and Kanye-level trolling

  3. B.... R....

this man is still alive PLEASE everybody send him $10 and a bag of dope ASAP

    B.... R....

It would prolly kill him at this point. Send me the bag instead

    B.... R....

Ben Rifkin ....mmmmmm, Yes. I used to indulge a lot of shi🧨 and I understood everything about this crazyass song🤪

  4. R.... T....

He should have sued that fat white-boy that said he was a space-cowboy Steve Miller

  5. L.... S....

Larry Graham plays that bass so effortly and it's so good!

    L.... S....

That's Sly Stone playing Bass he played more than one instrument and would usually play most the instruments himself.

  6. H.... G....

I love this,, the yodeling, he’s too cool for school, tell me this isent sly at his most fucked up and dissolutioned the whole album is a masterpiece 💫

  7. T.... C....

    see you spaced cowboy

  8. B.... 7....

The only bad song on an otherwise wonderful album.

    B.... 7....

It's hilarious! And the intro/outro chord progression is really great.

    B.... 7....

@Swami Motel Now that you mention it yeah, but it's still funny

    B.... 7....

@Andrew Pearson even more so to me ....sly was sly

  9. K.... C....

    Thank You

  10. C.... S....

Thats the thing about music whats a treasure to one is trash to another , Brother. There is no period at the end of a song, it takes on a life of its own!

  11. M.... E....

the only one that could pull that off , if you have talent take it as far as you can, no one will ever understand artist, and musical artist, people say we are strange, who cares

  12. B.... R....

the ORIGINAL OG MOTHERFUCKING MUMBLE RAPPER

    B.... R....

@Ben Rifkind No *offend to genius Sly* with your stuppid post milennial comparison.

  13. L.... W....

This is really a stupid song, but it is a great song! I love it! Only Sly could pull this off.

  14. V.... T....

    The build up is amazing

  15. L.... C....

Walking in my Jr. High, had it timed dead center to miss the crowd, they played 2 songs 1. You can make it if you try, does anyone remember the other one??

  16. R.... M....

baddest cat that ever scrambled. Sly.

  17. L.... C....

this one time i requested this song on my college radio station which is actually generally awesome - there was a show that only played 60s and 70s music. they played it for me HOWEVER they literally talked over the whole thing. i mean damn how disrespectful can u be -_-

  18. a.... ....

Rhyming limp with pimp. Shut up.

  19. O.... ....

I'm reading comments on how creative Sly was on this track. I'd say more fucked up than creative. Probably the most fucked up he's been on any recording.

    O.... ....

+OldeSkool1 maybe not the lyrics per se but the feeling of the song like the way he sings it takes a very adept musician and someone who's creative to do so. "I was on my last leg and I couldn't borrow my friends extra peg" that's pretty impressive if you ask me. Not to mention the composition of the song

    O.... ....

His state of mind helped produce a great track

  20. h.... ....

interesting take on old school blues, country is nothing but the blues and this is not country!

  21. b.... ....

The most soulful yodeling I've ever heard.

    b.... ....

    Sly Stone !! 5mill. Sweet ¡!

  22. J.... s....

what's going on with the production?

    J.... s....

tape hiss ... DIY shit. killer!

    J.... s....

Listen, Sly knew exactly what he was doing. He wanted this song to sound EXACTLY as it does. It took him two years to make this album. He wanted this funky muted almost fuzzy sound. The sound mirrored the emotion of the song. He layered and layered. This song was also NOT --- I repeat -- NOT recorded for a compact disc and separation of sound. It sounds infinitely better on vinyl or a cassette tape.

    J.... s....

    +Bluboie Comeau It's an F.U.N.K. box.

    J.... s....

Just like those early Shuggie Otis records or even jazz records like Rahsaan Roland Kirk, etc. Just a warmer denser sound.

  23. k.... ....

One of the most sublime exposition of bass playing ever!

    k.... ....

    'greed
    one of

    k.... ....

the best of course being "Thank You For Talking To Me, Africa"

  24. N.... ....

Not enough yodeling in Funk Music anymore. :)

Not enough FUNK in "funk" music anymore. :(

  25. z.... ....

Good that Sly got the chance to show off his sense of humour. He is as much a psychopath as he is a genius. That is a compliment I don't throw around unless it's truly deserved.

  26. A.... S....

every thing I like is nice, thats why I like to have it twice...nuff said

  27. D.... ....

My brutha sez he remembers this song being in a Movie soundtrack, but couldn't think of the Movie. Anyone know?

  28. F.... E....

    THIS is smokey!

  29. N.... ....

Only Sly could Yodel so funky!

  30. z.... ....

for some reason this reminds me of Laurel and Hardy's at the ball from Way Out West

  31. J.... H....

I bought this in cassette and was blown away by it. this kind of funk was very new then.

  32. b.... ....

That instrumental intro has to be The Funkiest Shit ever out there.

  33. J.... H....

my cousin got this for my brother and I for Christmas the year it came out.... she thought it was quite the joke... what would a skinny white boy do with this. My brother hated it, so it was all mine... I played it to death... Brave and Strong esp.... where is it?

    J.... H....

    Appreciate you Jon! Keep funking!

  34. R.... R....

ahhhh. Just saw my comments from 3 years ago. lolololol

    R.... R....

Rick Ross crazy right? I'm living this now...still dope yodeling though.

  35. R.... R....

lololololol. I got this album from a classmate when I was in 7th grade. She was strictly rock n roll and couldn't get in to Sly. I'm still thanking her to this day! When I would play this song, my grandmother would shake her head and say, "LAWD NOT THE YODELLIN SONG AGAIN". Memories. Thanks for posting it. PEACE.

  36. D.... W....

    Just fuckin' A.

  37. o.... ....

i found this album in my closet lol

  38. R.... H....

    @nschulz4537 THEY MISSED IT!!!!!!!!...........

  39. n.... ....

The greatest song in the history of country music.

  40. G.... A....

    i must love this track.
remember this album,so serious look society.
    thx.

  41. S.... ....

    wtf???? lol.

  42. s.... ....

I first heard this on my dad's greatest sly album i was loaded and it blew my mind... Thanks 70's for letting an 80's baby know what music is.

  43. s.... ....

My favorite track off Riot....I could sing this forever.

  44. K.... ....

this shit is so fly it hurts

  45. s.... ....

the subtle change 46 seconds to 58 is perfection seriously how good was that and how good was Sly...

  46. T.... F....

@rosss1959 wishh iWazx oldd enuff to havee timezx lykk thatt,, im onlyy 15

  47. K.... ....

Everything I like is nice that's why I try to have it twice

  48. t.... ....

love it, like someone said earlie possibly the best on the album, andr prob sly best album, this tune is top dog

  49. t.... ....

Sounds like he was high more on LSD (or PCP) than coke when he did this song.

  50. R.... ....

LOL. My bad, I misinterpreted your reference on Acid

  51. d.... ....

    @RasputinStream

I never said the band split be cause of Acid- I 'm very well aware of Sly's coke problems - used to live in St. Petersburg FL- one of his spots of trouble

  52. R.... ....

dubze, he band practically broke cause the exsessive coke snortin. Not because of acid

  53. c.... 2....

    Possibly's Sly's most innovative track..

  54. A.... ....

Actually, at the time SLY was recording this album 1970,'71 coke was quickly becoming the drug of choice. Though I personally suspect massive quantities of Marijuana laced with all kinds of "goodies"... Acid? Abused well into the '70s, and even now, LSD is a very different "high" than "coke" or "heroin" or "pot".

  55. t.... ....

hive mentality makes you not like this.

Italians have been playing around with sound for years, get out of the box.

  56. d.... ....

More like acid is a hell of a drug- look at his era

  57. g.... ....

Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

  58. s.... ....

"Stand" was Sly's most commercially and critically successful album with the most classic radio played hits (ie "Sing a Simple Song"..."Stand"...I Wanna Take You Higher"..."You Can Make It If You Try"...) but "There's A Riot Goin' On" is my favorite. If you let it it will touch you ina deeper place inoyr soul than any of Sly's other albums

  59. T.... F....

love playin this when i high

  60. d.... ....

As much as I usually loathe drum machines, this kicks all sorts of ass. Sly is the epitome of funk. The man made drum machines and yodeling cool. Only Sly has that sort of flavor.

  61. k.... ....

Everybody on here repeatin' the whole wikipedia "drugs, dark, depression state etc..." about this album, but to be real with ya' I dont care what he was on this is a Beautiful album from the cover down to every song on the album is brillant, the concept spaced cowboy the bass line, the harmonica the yodelin, the DRUM MACHINE, I mean come on man? Talk about innovative, timeless and FREE... my song is JUST LIKE A BABY...

  62. T.... W....

I have to admit, the whole "There's A Riot Goin' On" album (especially this track) caught me off guard when I first heard it. I listened to "Stand!" until I had it down, then I read so many GLOWING reviews about "Riot" that my curiousity was peaked. When I heard it, it was dark, hazy, claustrophobic...Sly was obviously high! But behind all the haze, there was genius. After repeated listenings, I finally got it.

  63. J.... P....

this was the hardest song to listen to but i respect his realness in adding it

  64. R.... I....

more effective than a afternoon special. I am bewildered. lol

  65. t.... ....

    on the fruit boots 7"

  66. t.... ....

    this is stone

  67. R.... R....

This brings back fond teenage memories. I can still hear my grandmother's voice, " Oh God, not that yodellin fool again"!!!!!!! I used to play this whole album to death. JUST LIKE A BABY was my cut. TIME was the bomb too. ALL OF EM WAS GOOD TO GO.

  68. b.... ....

    That brotha is fucked up!

  69. g.... ....

I believe sly was playing bass on this track.
    larry graham played much cleaner.

  70. P.... B....

I have that, yeah, Suck My Toes, engineered you know by Sammy Davis Junior. Captain Beefheart sampled it on Bat Chain Puller. And thanks for the post Mister Pink!

  71. g.... ....

    FONK!!!

  72. t.... ....

This is actually one of the first albums by a musician to employ a drum machine.

  73. S.... B....

Innovative Sly using the drum machine in 1971.
