Sly & The Family Stone - Frisky Lyrics

I'll be down, when you're gone
Call me back on the telephone
Lil ole, lil ole, lil ole name and a title
I gets all the way down
If I don't keep smilin' witchall
You gonna see me frown
That's why I keep music
All around the bed
So I can call Frisky
Very hard to be led in the wrong direction
Frisky, yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh Frisky, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh Frisky, yeah, yeah, Frisky, hah hah
Put a little tickle on the Jones' head
Turn off the lights and go to bed
Have you ever ever stopped a rainbow
I don't think so at least
It kept on comin'
What an afternoon feast
Energy the jailur
Wanna keep it in check
Gonna check with my tailor
'Cause I don't give a heck
Yeah, yeah, Frisky, Frisky yeah
Ah huh Frisky, oh yes sir Frisky

Put a little tickle on the Jones' head
Turn off the lights and go to bed
Under-under-understand the
power of a little heart
Applied at the wrong pressure
Makes for a slower start yea

Short time I'll be there
Didn't wait too long
I long for sunday
When I don't feel strong
Get down somethin' Frisky

"CALL ME BACK ON THE TELEPHONE!" Ha. This whole album is so damn funky, but this song in particular. Andy Newmark's drumming, oof. Sparse, deep in the pocket. So good.

  2. H.... G....

the fresh album was ranked # 188 out of the best 500 lp's of all time according to Rolling Stone magazine.

  9. K.... L....

a very funk song from the best album sly ever recorded. fresh is much funkier lp than riot. i was i knew what this song was about?

    K.... L....

I love Fresh as well but Riot is a masterpiece. It's so unbelievably layered. Sly kept recording one track on top of another (actual reel to reel tape) to make this incredible multi-layered sound that you would never get in this digital age. There's so much feeling in Riot, and everyone and his brother ripped off its sound. Look at The Temptations' 'Papa was a Rolling Stone,' or any of The O'Jays' songs from that period: direct rips offs from the sound Sly created on Riot. You can't overstate how revolutionary Riot was. It stands as one of the great albums of all time. Now, I will say that 'In Time' is as good as anything on Riot, but Fresh lacks the cohesive whole that Riot achieved. Riot stands with the best of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, anyone you can mention.

Fresh is easily my favorite Family Stone album. The whole album is great but In Time and Frisky are the best songs on it in my opinion.

    Jack Straw Frisky is great.

Always loved Sly's touch on keyboards. The Gospel Music influence is very apparent. Richard Tee, Ray Charles, and Billy Preston had the same flavor...

Any way anyone could upload the alternate version of this song? I actually prefer that mix to the official one. Thanks for sharing! :)

www . amazon . com / Fresh-Sly-Family-Stone/dp/B000MTFG1M - Track 13 - Frisky (Alternate Mix) - was on the 2007 limited edition remastering apparently.

@DeAngelo Starnes Yep, that was the one I was referring to. I'm glad someone remembered it and thank you for not being snarky about it. :) I only had the vinyl and at the time I was looking to play it away from home and that was all I could find but I too grew to love it.

    T.... F....

@RasputinStream It's cool, I didn't word my first comment at all well re-reading it a year later. :p I was grateful that you'd uploaded it, (I was pretty sure I'd thanked you for sharing the original...not a big fan of google + and didn't remember any of this until I saw a notification just now) I just got into that alternate mix and knew it was on here at one time, thought maybe you had it in your private stash.

    T.... F....

HO-LY CRAP!! I know I'm late to the party here but I want to thank you for mentioning the alternate version. I just heard it and it is SO MUCH BETTER!!!

  18. L.... H....

Ahaha, not long ago I was talking with a Jazz Journalist who'd met Herbie Hancock several times and known him for quite a long time. Apparently, Herbie did play with Sly on his There's A Riot Going On, but can't recall anything except meeting with Sly.
I laughed so hard imagining him getting so f-ed up he can't remember a thing. Some Journalist tried to make him recall the event by making him listen the whole album, but he can't recall a thing....

    L.... H....

    priceless

Sly and the Family Stone were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

    @roscoegino No Django Reinhardt,Charlie Christian,Coleman Hawkins= No Charlie Parker!!

  29. S.... M....

    0 dislikes. Damn straight.

  30. b.... ....

that's why I keep music all around the bed,so I can call frisky very hard to be led in the wrong direction

  31. U.... B....

@ RATMfan92 and roscoegino, actually, funk was an eclectic compilation of several musical styles: soul, jazz, rock, gospel and sometimes, classical.

  32. S.... B....

@RATMfan92 well, soul influenced funk vocally because in soul the voice phrasings play the biggest role. But as far as drums and bass rhythms, hard bop fathered that. when we listen 2 elvin jones or any late 50s early 60s bass player for miles, dizzy etc you can hear funk being conceived.

  33. L.... S....

@roscoegino Actually funk evolved mainly from soul, but yeah it had influences from some jazz like hard bop.

  34. S.... B....

Funk evolved from hard bop which evolved from beebop. No Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie = no James, Sly, or George. That's how far it goes back.

  35. C.... E....

All I see in my mind when I hear this song
is a fresh candy-painted Cadillac Deville
sittin on 20-inch Dayton spokes and whitewall tires,
roll'n on the boulevard doing 25 and cruising...
true pimpgame music at its finest.

  36. R.... ....

    @egorham2006

Just as a side note I find Deodato much more intresting...

  37. R.... ....

    @egorham2006

Agreed. Jamiroguai is more or less Azumyth "reborn" if you will. There are many others like Brothers Johnson, Groover Washington who were making the wave for that specific sound of Soul Jazz but Sly definitely opened the path for all those, that would include 70's disco. You got to remember that Funk, Soul, R&B and Jazz were merging with each other and evolving extremely fast in that era.

  38. L.... S....

    FunkAy.

  39. R.... ....

Heres what P-Funksters (former JB's) say about funk and James.

    youtube(dot)com/watch?v=h_sO5e5xhfo

  40. R.... ....

Im calm and your name calling doesnt make you a case. You said P-Funk defined funk and Im telling you that is only the case in the minds of mainstream listeners. You dont have black mainstream listeners from that era thus "white", nothing to do with racism. Further more if one is to credit only one artist (which is obviously a mistake) for founding Funk that would most probably have to be James Brown, as in "the one".

  41. s.... f....

I never said George Clinton invented funk. Actually I said Sly did, so calm down idiot.

And I didnt say Jamiroquai is the definition of funk. Maybe you need to reread what i said? Why are you so worked up and offended? I merely said I dont think of him when I think funk.

George Clinton and Pfunk defined the genre. You cant deny that. And you need to get over "funk for only white people" Is it 1955 still? Are you really that concerned about race still? Lets get with the times....

  42. R.... ....

Who ever said Jamiroquai is the definition of Funk???

The word (or the musical concept) of funk was NOT invited or developed by Clinton. George and Parliament were singing"doo-wop" when funk was being founded and actually most pioneers call P Funk merely "funk for white people"....

You need to do your research in the history of funk n soul.

  43. s.... f....

When I think funk I dont think Jamiroquai(whoever that is) I think George Clinton Pfunk Sly founded funk and inspired PFunk to define the genre

  44. R.... ....

Soul, Funk, RnB,,, Its ALL there.

  45. R.... ....

Honestly, this is his best and most significant album and completely unerstated. The sound found here is as timeless as it gets and has contributed all the way to 90's funk; artists like Jamiroquai owe their whole career to this album.

  46. P.... ....

Thanks for posting this song! It helps me decide whether or not I want to buy an album if I can hear full versions of the songs first. UMG and WMG can stuff it, because I'm going to buy this on both cd and vinyl!

  47. L.... S....

I personally think Fresh is better album than There's a Riot Going On... but both are really great.

  48. d.... ....

    Gonna check with my tailor
    'Cause i don't give a heck

    Nasty song & album!

    The best!
