it's weird, they worked with Brian Eno a little bit on this album (he is even given a songwriting credit on "Sing"), but the obvious lift/sampling of Eno's "Becalmed" for the chords here seems to have gone without any attribution or notice?

Watch the documentary. Halstead only knew Eno's work producing with Bowie up to this point.

The song talks about the demise of the capital city of Sheba, Ma'rib, that was suposdly destroyed when its dam burst, and might have caused the demise of other cities. "son of Sheba, I saw him drown"

Slowdive, one of the greatest bands that you never heard before.

This song sounds like the feeling that you have when you put on dry clothes after getting caught out in the rain.

So I'm curious, being that I've just lately have been doing my research on this band, I read wiki said that during the era of this album which this song came from, they weren't popular, in fact after Pygmalion, they were hated! ?? Any body can confirm that and tell why? And Creation records dropped them after Pygmalion, wow.

People absolutely hated Souvlaki when it came out. one critic said, other than the song Sing, he'd rather, and i quote, "drown in a bathtub of porridge" than hear the album again.
