Slim Dusty - A Pub With No Beer Lyrics

Oh it's-a lonesome away from your kindred and all
By the campfire at night, we'll hear the wild dingoes call
But there's-a nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear
Than to stand in the bar of a pub with no beer

Now the publican's anxious for the quota to come
And there's a faraway look on the face of the bum
The maid's gone all cranky and the cook's acting queer
Oh, what a terrible place is a pub with no beer

Then the stockman rides up with his dry dusty throat
He breasts up to the bar and pulls a wad from his coat
But the smile on his face quickly turns to a sneer
As the barman says sadly, "The pub's got no beer"

Then the swaggie comes in, smothered in dust and flies
He throws down his roll and rubs the sweat from his eyes
But when he is told, he says, "What's this I hear?
I've trudged fifty flamin' miles to a pub with no beer"

Now there's a dog on the v'randa, for his master, he waits
But the boss is inside, drinking wine with his mates
He hurries for cover and he cringes in fear
It's no place for a dog 'round a pub with no beer

And old Billy the blacksmith, the first time in his life
Why he's gone home cold sober to his darling wife
He walks in the kitchen, she says, "You're early, Bill dear"
But then he breaks down and tells her the pub's got no beer

Oh, it's hard to believe that there's customers still
But the money's still tinkling in the old ancient till
The wine buffs are happy and I know they're sincere
When they say they don't care if the pub's got no beer

So it's-a lonesome away from your kindred and all
By the campfire at night, we'll hear the wild dingoes call
But there's-a nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear

I recall listening to and singing along with this song as a young fellow in the late ‘50’s ,early ‘60’s and, even after all those years, I can still remember most of the words. Time to re-introduce it at the next house party....(this for the two Brians on New Years on the Swamp Road)

  6. Glenn Turner

  7. Karen Penrod

Australians are very sentimental, but hide that
    with an irreverant
    sense of humour...🐨

  8. Karen Penrod

    Must enjoy the poetry of
    Henry Lawson(1916)
    Complemented by the
    paintings of Pro Hart NSW.
    The Sliprails
and the Spur "And he rides
    hard to dull the pain
    Who rides from one that
    loves him best...
    And he rides slowly
    back again,
    Whose restless heart
    must rove for rest."

Following the Stockman, the Swaggie :

A giant among the giants. This song performed by Bobbejaan Schoepen in Flemish (Dutch) language became a great hit in Flanders and Holland.

  19. Jack Shennan

I've used this to tell of managers for taking away milo, coffee and tea supplies (and/or fail to maintain them properly).

You send them the link, because your hands are cut and dirty, your shoulders are tired, and your legs are slightly jelly from lifting, bending, kneeling on concrete floors, your mind is jumbled with circuits, with data logic loops, with the feeling of the rubber and steel vibrating beneath your hand, as your exquisitely tuned senses (the epitome of human capacity to achieve such relationships with our tools) desire for only 15 minutes, a cup of coffee and a seat... only to find out that the break rooms got no beverages.

You send them this song in an email.

I feel it has just the right touch of Aussie in it. Hey mate, pubs without beers are nothing any Aussie wants, fix it.

    Carolle Enkelmann

Reminds me of that song about the whole in the bucket, " dear Liza, dear Liza,"..well fix it!

  59. Tony Nieboer

I still listen to good ol Slim, and love his music, never forget his music !!!

  60. Roy Hogue

When I discovered Slim Dusty I realized he was the genuine article, a country music fan's country singer. I started looking for more of his music and I soon ran across the video of the state funeral the government of Australia threw for Slim. My jaw dropped open when I saw that. A state funeral is not something they throw away. I had been told by a contact in Oz that he was considered the father of country music in Australia. But he was really much more than that. We have many famous artists here in the states but I wouldn't throw a state funeral for any of them, not even Hank Williams, a man who just about defines country music to me.

Slim Dusty is national treasure and certainly a man who is iconic of Australia and its people. Enjoy him and his music. I can't think of anyone like Slim Dusty anywhere else.
