Sleeping At Last - Earth Lyrics

I dig 'til my shovel tells a secret,
Swear to the earth that I will keep it,
Brush off the dirt
And let my change of heart occur.

Sold soon after the appraisal,
The hammer struck the auction table
Louder than anything I've ever heard.

Fault lines tremble underneath my glass house.
But I put it out of my mind
Long enough to call it courage
To live without a lifeline.
I bend the definition
Of faith to exonerate my blind eye.
'Til the sirens sound, I'm safe.

Meanwhile, my family's taking shelter.
The sparks send the fire down the wire,
A countdown begins,
Until the dynamite gives in.

The echo, as wide as the equator,
Travels through a world of built up anger-
Too late to pull itself together now.

Fault lines tremble underneath my glass house.
But I put it out of my mind
Long enough to call it courage
To live without a lifeline.
I bend the definition
Of faith to exonerate my blind eye.
'Til the sirens sound, I'm safe.

There was an earthquake.
There was an avalanche of change.
We were so afraid,
We cried ourselves a hurricane.
There were floods,
And tidal waves over us,
We folded our hands and prayed.
Like a domino,
These wildfires grow and grow
Until a brand new world takes shape.

Fault lines tremble underneath my glass house.
But I put it out of my mind
Long enough to call it courage
To live without a lifeline.
I bend the definition
Of faith to exonerate my blind eye.
'Til the sirens sound, I'm safe.

'Til the sirens sound, I'm safe.
'Til the sirens sound, I'm safe.

  9. A.... M....

It's a poetry and he sung it! ♥️

  10. A.... C....

I know I’m late, but I thought this song was about the world that we live in. People do terrible things, in the end it hurts them and bad things happen( until a brand new world takes shape) and it affects everyone even your family, home and earth.

  11. Y.... Y....

this song begins with the singer digging until the earth decides to provide him with "a secret", upon which the singer promises to keep it and promptly sells it, knowing full well what'll happen next and feeling guilty about it (though not enough to stop the secret from being auctioned off, supported by "louder than anything i've ever heard"). in the line "exonerate my blind eye", along with "but i put it out of my mind" from the chorus for this first part both imply that the singer knew of the disasters that would follow after he sold the secret but deliberately chose not to think about it.

the second part is how the auctioneers/whoever he sold the secret to continue "digging" for more of that secret, blasting the earth with dynamite. "fire down the wire/til the dynamite gives in". this once again angers the earth, and it's the straw that breaks the camel's back. "a world of built up anger" - representing all the previous things humanity has done to it. "too late to pull itself together now" is the song of fury the shattered earth screams at humanity for this and everything else, finally breaking apart.

the third part is this final disaster - the earth, having finally been pushed to the breaking point, ripping humanity apart for good. all the lines in this part correspond to or mention natural disasters - wildfires, floods, hurricanes, avalanches. it especially focuses on change - "an avalanche of change" terrifying the humans. the humans bring themselves together in the face of this fury, "folded our hands and prayed" that it would end.
note that the song does not make clear whether or not the change is good or bad - it's just change, and that scares people. because of the human point of view of the song, the change is made out to be terrifying and emotional, but i'd like to believe it was for the better for the earth and ultimately humanity as a whole.

finally, the chorus is just a space in between - a memorial to the way humanity lied to itself, put the myriad warning signs out of their minds and bent faith to form a shield between their glass house and the destruction they had wrought. trying to protect this fragile thing from everything they'd done to the earth.

    Y.... Y....

That’s a beautiful way to put it.

  12. P.... W....

The birth pains of a new earth. May it come quickly.

  15. A.... D....

Here we stand. The survivors of a falling world. We know we will fall one day, nothing lasts forever. Here we stand, offering kindness. To make the last of our world worth living in. Until the end, we stand.

  16. B.... B....

    We cried ourselves a hurricane.

  17. P.... N....

This man is seriously one of the best currently at composition and creating meaningful melodies and harmonies. I truly hope he keeps it up for decades to come.

  18. ~.... L....

I swear this music just made me cry. I'm crying and don't even know why. Wow.
This is music in its best shape.

  19. J.... S....

But I put it out of my mind
Long enough to call it courage

That line hits me for some reason...

  20. S.... ....

It feels like when you keep trying to hold it together until you just can't. You know everything is breaking and being destroyed around you through build-up and denial. So you keep turning away and trying to hold your world together until something snaps, you hit bottom, and you break.

  21. J.... J....

Is a lot of your music inspired by your relationships with the Lord? Or scripture?

  22. E.... C....

after I did a recital dance to this song, I fell in love with this band. im honestly speechless of what they can do with music.

  23. A.... C....

Sounds like a greys anatomy type of song

  24. -.... G....

I feel this is like natural disasters and how we humans can cause hem just by the daily life we life. We will continue to live “safely” until a disaster calm then all is chaos

I wouldn’t say we cause it but we don’t really go searching for it either. We sorta life knowing we’ll be a live tomorrow but that unknowing behavior creates disaster inside of us, around us. So we have to know the truth in other to feel calm in all things.

  25. E.... S....

If you listen real closely, you can hear his voice waver. You can hear the raw emotion that everyone misses out in popular music these days

  26. p.... e....

I feel like depressing songs make you relieve your depression just for a pinch of time, who ever is going through what i am try to release it.. before its to late because trust me. I'm late and I'm still going through some stuff, but just keep going, keep thriving and maybe just maybe it will leave you alone, you can finish before it eats you, and kills you....

  27. A.... J....

    He'll never make a timelord...

  28. O.... ....

These songs are blessing my life, so grateful I found them

  29. A.... ....

i wish this song got more recognition, honestly everyone who says that what we've been doing to the earth doesn't harm it should listen to this song

  30. T.... ....

    "He'll never make a timelord"

  31. K.... B....

    Seni bir gün unutacağım.

  32. K.... B....

    Güçlü olmalıyım.💪💪

  33. e.... ....

wow... what a story could tell just by a song. absolutely stunning, heart wrenching, breath taking, song

  34. T.... K....

The glass house is their whole world, but it's sitting unstably on dangerous fault lines that might collapse the house at any moment. Despite this imminent danger, they continue living life as if it wasn't teetering on the edge of destruction. They deceive themselves in thinking that "live[ing] without a lifeline" is actually a courageous thing to do. In thinking this, they "bend the definition of faith" to convince themselves that ignoring the bad situation is okay because they believe that trust in the situation and their own ability is more important than their faith in God, their only true lifeline. They think "'til the sirens sound, I'm safe," meaning that they believe their treacherous situation is okay because they still have time before the emergency earthquake sirens are sounding telling everyone to evacuate the house. They won't change their ruinous lifestyle until it's too late and everything they know and love collapses all around them.
When the house finally comes crashing down it's a chaotic mess, and everyone near them is affected and swept away in the wreckage of their life. They waited too long for the inevitable disaster from living a foolish life that couldn't sustain itself, and now they're all suffering from its collapse. The countdown to utter destruction has begun and it's "too late too pull itself together." The echo is God, and being "as wide as the equator" shows that He is the one thing big and powerful enough to contend with the Earth. He is the one relief from collapse, travelling "through a world of built up anger" to redeem it.

  36. L.... M....

This is one of my favorites (Right after Saturn and Light) the lyrics are absolutely amazing. You could easily put these songs together and have a perfectly painted picture.

  37. S.... L....

If we don't take care of Our Mother Earth, she will crumble and take us with her. Global warming is real. Ocean pollution is real. Fracking is real. It is up to each one of us to speak out and do something about these issues. It may be too late? Only God knows.

  38. n.... ....

to everyone who has been asking: i do still plan on making these lyric videos, i started college last year and it's a fast paced course so i've been constantly busy with revision for assessments. i finish up next month so i should be back on my bullshit then. but for now, sleeping at last's official channel has some pretty cute micro music videos! ♥

I think all the songs named after planets have some sort of deeper tie into history, or issues that have plagued the world. This song could very easily be about slavery, and Mars could be about veterans, etc.

[Quran 6:19] Say, "Whose testimony is the greatest?" Say, "God's. He is the witness between me and you that this Quran has been inspired to me, to preach it to you and whomever it reaches. Indeed, you bear witness that there are other gods beside God." Say, "I do not testify as you do; there is only one god, and I disown your idolatry."
[Quran 6:38] We did not leave anything out of this book.
[Quran 7:52] We have given them a scripture that is fully detailed, with knowledge, guidance, and mercy for the people who believe.
[Quran 10:37] This Quran could not possibly be authored by other than God. It confirms all previous messages, and provides a fully detailed scripture. It is infallible, for it comes from the Lord of the universe.
[Quran 12:111] In their history, there is a lesson for those who possess intelligence. This is not fabricated Hadith; this (Quran) confirms all previous scriptures, provides the details of everything, and is a beacon and mercy for those who believe.

The ones who dislike are the ones who live blindly and think everything will always be ok, the ones who are unable to see the damage we cause, the fires and the floods. They are the ones who are too blind to see their errors , too full of greed to change the way they think. Soon our civilization will go extinct because we waited too long to change.

  55. W.... S....

The thing I like most about these songs is how visual they are, every lyric paints a picture in your mind.

    The story:

While on an excavation expedition, the singer discovers an ancient artefact, and decides to sell it at auction despite initially wanting to keep it a secret. The artefact turns out to be dangerously powerful ancient weapon that causes the end of the world and people are evacuated to a safe zone as they watch the planet crumble. The singer contemplates and broods over what really is "the right thing" when you're faced with an easy way out and the justice way out, and realizes that as he ignores his responsibilities, it ultimately causes his fragile life to collapse, and cause the end of the world.

Natural disasters occur all over the word, ranging from tsunamis and earthquakes to wildfires and fissures. As the singer succumbs alongside the rest of earth, he reasons that he can't be held responsible for this, as long as authorities do not find out about it. He accepts death with everyone else as a new world, cleansed of sin and corruption, is born.

  72. T.... ....

These lyrics speak for themselves. This is what we need to hear more

  73. .... i....

Ive seen several people commenting what they interpret the song as, so here’s my version

Also, I left a few things out because I feel they would be self explanatory and easy to understand

“Dig till my shovel tells a secret”
The artist getting to know a person. He learns their secrets in the process.

“Swear to the earth that I will keep it”
Promising that he’ll keep this persons secrets, with the “earth” being that person.

“Let my change of heart occur”
Knowing the person better now, they’re feelings start to change

    “Sold soon after the appraisal”
They are now sold on the fact that this person is different than previously thought, and that they like them

“The hammer struck the auction table louder than anything I’ve ever heard”
This somewhat goes along with the last one, the writer making a clear decision at this point and starting a relationship with the person they got to know.

“Fault lines tremble underneath my glass house.”
Despite having gotten to know the person and liking them, the relationship is unstable and threatening to collapse

“But I put it out of my mind long enough to call it courage”
This one is kinda self explanatory. They’re trying to ignore the fact that the relationship is unstable.

    “To live without a lifeline”
The one they started a relationship with stopped helping and/or supporting the artist

“I bend the definition of faith to exonerate my blind eye”
They are trying to call what they are doing “faith” so as to ignore and redeem the fact that they were ignorant

“Till the sirens sound I’m safe”
Until things starts to get really bad, they think they are safe

    “My family’s taking shelter”
Their family is starting to shut away the person that the artist is in a relationship with

“A countdown begins until the dynamite gives in”
It’s only a matter of time now before things get really bad

The echo as wide as the equator travels through a world of build up anger”
The world of built of anger is the toxic relationship, and the echo is a reminder of how things used to be, happy and alright.

“There was an earthquake, there was an avalanche of change”
Because of the “echo” they both realized how bad things had become. Because of this things began to change drastically.

“The wildfires grow and grow, till a brand new world takes shape”
In this line, the wildfires(which don’t necessarily signify anger and hate, but getting rid of the old and replacing it with the new) are starting to spread, causing the relationship to transform into something better

  74. C.... B....

I associate with song. I interpret it as the person convincing themselves their okay until they reach absolute rock bottom.

All around me the tall grass whispered silent screams. The trees grumbled their complaints but they knew it was inevitable. The men had come with axes and saws, but something else happened. A wildifire. They sparked one for some reason and it was ripping right through the forest. I stood staring in horror as the flames ran up the 19 foot tree easily, and spreading along the grass to more and more trees. The grass began to scream louder. I hadn't know grass could do anything but whisper, but their shrieking was the final push I needed. I ran back to my village as fast as the wind would take me. I got back within 10 minutes, I ran right to Chiefs tent and burst into it. Pointing to the west, the men's camp. "A fire. A wild fire. Spreading quickly." I said in our native language. He jumped from his seated position and ran out of the tent, calling his people to him, spreading the information quickly. They were to go figure out how quickly it was spreading as fast as possible. Everyone was to pack their things and prepare to leave. I go with the men to check on the fire. It had spread quickly. When I had left it had 2 trees in its grasp, and now it had 9. We looked amongst ourselves and agreed it was dangerous as it soon took a 10th tree. We raced to the village. The wind was whirling and howling now, the sky was clear as day, no storm or rain in sight. We could smell the smoke now. Soon the animals began to run through our camp in their desire for escape. The plants all shrieked horribly as everything but them was able to leave. As they were killed one by one. We had to completely leave the forest. It destroyed everything.

  94. P.... A....

    Unreal❤️

  95. E.... ....

The wonderful thing is that this isn't that great, the tune itself isn't that unique, it's beautiful yes, but not entirely WOW. But the simple poetry and truth that the lyrics create is where this songs real power lies, and that brings everything together in a way I can't TRULY explain. It's like a reverse big bang, instead of the universe exploding outwards and breaking apart, everything is pulled close and we are knitted together with this song in such a personal way. Just breathtaking.

    E.... ....

Beautiful lyrics, and although I fear that few people catch, it, the metaphor contained in this song (as well as Mercury) are truly astonishing.
