Sleater-Kinney - Can I Go On Lyrics

Everyone I know is tired
Everyone I know is wired
To machines, it's obscene
I'll just scream til it don't hurt no more

Everyone I know is happy
But everyone I know is napping
Half the day, thrown away
But I can't find the thrill anymore

Maybe I'm not sure
I wanna go on, I wanna go on
Maybe I'm not sure
I wanna go on at all

Everyone I know is funny
But jokes don't make us money
Sell our rage, buy and trade
But we still cry for free every day

Everyone I know is bored
But everyone I know is floored
Crawl around, on the ground
Let the sound of your blood lead the way

Maybe I'm not sure
I wanna go on, I wanna go on
Maybe I'm not sure
I wanna go on at all

My desire is contagious
My desire is contagious
My desire is contagious
My desire is contagious
My desire is contagious
My desire is contagious

Maybe I'm not sure
I wanna go on, I wanna go on
Maybe I'm not sure
I wanna go on at all

Maybe I'm not sure
I wanna go on, I wanna go on
Maybe I'm not sure
I wanna go on at all

Desire. Cleanliness. The ember of the roots of our family tree. Stare into the bones. Of gluttony. 😊

“The rules changed within the band, and they told me the rules changed,” she explained. “I said, ‘Am I just the drummer now?’ They said yes. And I said, ‘Can you tell me if I am still a creative equal in the band?’ And they said no. So, I left.”

    E.... M....

and you know what? I'm totally cool with that. Janet was no fun. She had a negative energy, and, frankly, as a drummer myself, I DID NOT LIKE HER PLAYING AT ALL. I literally jumped up and yelled "Hell YES!" when I learned she was gone. I saw them in Portland last month and they were fantastic. Better than ever. Janet leaving is a good thing. If she wants to be a creative equal, let her get with some people who ARE her equals... like... maybe go hang out at a Guitar Center or something and do some networking. Best 'o luck, Janet.

    E.... M....

@Berus7777 So you were waiting for 25 years for Janet to leave the band? OK buddy

  5. M.... B....

    Please research the flat Earth!

    M.... B....

    ... the band?

    M.... B....

@ZombieBatmanJesus No, I'm pretty sure he's talking about the mental illness.

one of the best new songs from 2019 - fantastic job, S-K ❤️

  7. w.... a....

    fkn love this

  8. A.... G....

Please explain! Was the mud fight supposed to be sex or something? Like, all I got is that they're a couple that spontaneously was like, 'I'm bored. Let's do the dirty.' It has to be more than that, right. Did I interpret this wrong???? Help!

  9. T.... H....

I love this video so much. I hope everyone else loved it too

Just found out about this from https://www.afterellen.com/music/572279-sleater-kinney-can-i-go-on-music-video-gives-middle-aged-women-permission. Thrilled to see you still active, still challenging still wonderful. Also great that your are coming to the UK

  17. W.... ....

I've been waiting for Sleater-Kinney to make another music video with actual characters in it since "Jumpers." Thanks for finally delivering! Maybe one day there will even be another video with you all starring in it. "Get Up" is your best video, after all.

  18. S.... ....

Hope you enjoyed the video. Stoked to see you on tour.

    S.... ....

Hi Corin and Carrie. I don’t know if your going to see this comment but I’m going to see you guys at the House of Blues on the 29th. I know you guys have a strict set list, but it would mean the world to me if you played the song Sympathy. Thanks for any consideration, and I love you guys so much, no matter what!

    S.... ....

I loved it my girl sang this song to me it was cute

    S.... ....

Nevermind I got mono so I won’t be going, I’m pretty disappointed but health is the most important thing. Hopefully you guys will come by again

    S.... ....

@FLASH Sorry to hear that I hope you get back to stereo soon man.

  19. D.... ....

Not bad, but doesn't sound like the same group that made New Wave and Bury Our Friends.

    D.... ....

Disease Check out their 2006 album The woods .its almost like a different band .

  20. A.... ....

I'm sad to be typing this...but having listened to several tracks from the new album...I really can't blame Janet Weiss for leaving.

    A.... ....

It's more of a Sleater Kinney/St. Vincent collabo album as opposed to a straight up SK album. Plus it's very keyboard and production heavy and not in a good way. Friedman's production on "The Woods" was dense and complex as well but he emphasized the guitar interplay and got that "natural room" vibe. I think this LP has some great songs on it but I'm not a fan of the production.

    A.... ....

I don't blame Janet for leaving, I blame her for ever having been in the band. She was very negative, and stunted their growth and creativity. It was a needed change. A very good thing. Oh... and, as a drummer myself, let me just say... Janet is not very good. Go listen to some of Stella Mozgawa's playing... (such as on Kurt Vile - "Pretty Pimpin'"). SHE is good.

  21. C.... J....

Wait, did they poisoned themselves? And the other images were scenes of freedom from the normality of daily life?

  22. M.... ....

Being old-fashioned, I bought the CD. But these visuals knock it out of the park. I want a DVD of this album! I want it archived for my children, and on my TV when I'm cleaning.

  23. A.... B....

    Well... this is freakin amazing.

  24. F.... P....

Totally ROFL at the Billie Eyelash reference.

    F.... P....

    omg what part was that

  25. L.... P....

A special band. A special place in my heart always.

  26. C.... D....

It looks very hard the Annie's work in this. :')

  27. A.... V....

This is one of the cuts from the album that I felt was among the strongest. The lyrics, concept, attitude, and tone are all cohesive here in an expert way. Love it!

  28. P.... W....

The expressions on their faces are incredible.

  29. P.... W....

One of the best videos I’ve ever seen.

  30. n.... c....

    grande video e grande musica

  31. c.... ....

The most disappointing album of all time

    c.... ....

You must not listen to a lot of albums then

  32. D.... A....

Uf course, it's GARBAGE. What a sellout. Hail JANET!

  33. L.... G....

I loved the song already. And now I love the video so much!

  34. g.... ....

An interesting video for a song with such depressive lyrics.. Not the Paramore After Laughter "upbeat depression" with colorful 80s vibes and not the typical "edgy depression" emo thing, but a third way. The most original and maybe the most appropriate.

/ also, I like how some people hear the "wired to machines" part and think "oh no S-K is doing the boomer 'phones are bad' thing" like. nooooo it's so clearly about how capitalism makes you tired and sad

    g.... ....

people need to learn that more generations exist between the boomers and now; this band is generation x

    g.... ....

@None of Your Business you're missing the point

  35. L.... P....

I just don't like Carrie's voice in this one & I'm getting some weird Tegan and Sara vibes here. Ugh.

    L.... P....

Okay the comments are all positive so I'll give it a few listens.

    L.... P....

tegan and sara are super cool tho

  36. J.... ....

Just weird. Modern day feminist art direction SUCKS ASS!!

  37. S.... F....

Not my favorite song on this very listenable, solid album but SK can put out a polka album and it would still be more interesting than 90% of what is out there. Glad the frat boys are not digging this album. There were too many of you at the reunion concert because you saw Carrie on TV and you were blocking my view.

    S.... F....

    You are short. Tough.

    S.... F....

I am here for this top quality comment!! So real

    S.... F....

I invented a shirt with a camera in the front and a screen on the back so you can see what they're blocking

  38. M.... ....

Remember that everyone is dirty in own head, always

  39. P.... P....

    Love this!!!

  40. L.... L....

Love the video! Thanks for doing the Q & A today.

  41. N.... O....

this is a reaaaaally really really good song. i'll have a super expensive trip this year, so i decided i won't pay for any trip to a concert unitl next year, but now i want to listen to this song live.

  42. B.... G....

This song was definitely a Stand out for me on the Album! Soooo good

  43. C.... S....

My favorite song on the album

  44. W.... M....

I like the start of the video, but like the record itself, it has no direction. So we have two middleaged ladies wrestling in the mud. Why? It's so anti-punk rock, pretentious political diatribe. If I was the drummer on this track, I would have left the band. Happy the remaining SK is rich and bored, devoid of energy.

But hey, speak for yourself. I'm not tired, I'm invigorated and happy- and get this, I'm a guy. So, imagine if I'm so happy, how happy women must be in the Age of Women. What century is SK in, or are they just rich and bored, LA living?

I hate having this juvenile cynicism stuffed down my throat. The new album is a total DUD, a dead dumb dud.

    W.... M....

Chris O or we just don’t like them becoming a crappy mainstream pop band

    W.... M....

this album is so garbage, that i wish annie clark could die, rythme and some parts of the music we can still get where sk is,but literally it lost all the 'simple but larger than life',it is alsomost disgusting when they have kept their head for years and years and now we got a garbage,i am agree with you

    W.... M....

more sad is the real 'punker'as they said even can accept their idols do shit and the others critic is so no punk

    W.... M....

It's both sad and funny when curmudgeonly old fans chain themselves to their expectations. I bet he now claims to love all the Bowie he ignored or disliked over the last 20 years.

    W.... M....

" I'm a guy." Would have been obvious even without your name attached to the comment.

  45. J.... G....

Mud mouth ending was perfect! Beautiful video 💖 Keep killin it, SK!!!!!

    J.... G....

Please explain! Was the mud fight supposed to be sex or something? Like, all I got is that they're a couple that spontaneously was like, 'I'm bored. Let's do the dirty.' It has to be more than that, right. Did I interpret this wrong???? Help!

  46. W.... D....

    ???????????????????????????????? '-'

  47. a.... m....

Great song and great video!! Can’t wait to see you guys in November

  48. B.... J....

As a middle aged woman, I relate to this a lot. 😅

  49. w.... ....

    mud gorlz

  50. C.... ....

Can't wait, one of my favorite songs from the new album.

    C.... ....

You did a great job directing 😂

  51. t.... m....

Q1: Who will be drumming in NC tonight? Q2: Tell us why you love this person, and how you managed to keep it secret till today!? Q3: Will you please play your "More than a Feeling" cover when you come to Brooklyn?

  52. L.... B....

I’m dropping a Q because I’ll be at work. If Corin’s “too sticky” made it on a song from the goof off session, did anything else fun make it into the album that we can listen for? 🙂 can’t wait to see you in Louisville!!!
