Sixpence None The Richer - Riu Riu Chiu Lyrics

Riu, riu, chiu
La guarda ribera
Dios guarde el lobo
De nuestra cordera.

El lobo rabioso la quiso morder,
Mas Dios poderoso la supo defender;
Quisole hazer que no pudiesse pecar,
Ni aun original esta Virgen no tuviera.
Riu, riu, chiu, [etc]

Cristo patriarca de carne vestido;
Hanos redimido con se hazer chiquito,
Aunqu'era infinito, finito se hizera.
Riu, riu, chiu, [etc]

Riu, riu, chiu, [etc]

Riu, riu, chiu, [etc]

Y viene a reparar de todos la caida;
Es la luz del dia aqueste mocuelo;
Riu, riu, chiu, [etc]
Pues que ya tenemos lo que desseamos,
Todos juntos vamos presentes llevemos;
Riu, riu, chiu, [etc]

  9. Ether

    It's Basque.

  10. Robert Gope

    Yes, or may be Klingon.

  11. Robert Gope

    Yes, it's Spanish from the 16 century. It was atributed to Mateo Flecha, who is from Catalonia (not Catalana) But there is no consense about this point. The language is standard Spanish from that time (not just Catalonian Spanish).
    Riu, riu, chiu means nothing . It's the same thing with Fa, la, la, la, in English Christmas carols.

  12. Robert Gope

    I'm Spanish and this is definetely Spanish. This song comes from the Upsala Songbook. (16 century).
    By the way, this version is the same version sung by David Arcghuleta and has some wierd changes in word stress. It's a modern arrangem ent and in my opinion not very good.
    If you want to listen to a wonderful version search for the Calendas Maya version (Or m any others).

  13. TheNix74

  16. Carlos Mondragón

    Actually is not spanish, seems like italian

  17. Andres Ricardo Solorzano Gutierrez

    it´s not spanish, it´s italian, i´m sure

  18. RockingJamboree

    The Monkees version is simple and lovely. But this is absolutely NOT that version. It is it's own, Sixpence None the Richer version, and is delicious and magical as well. This song doesn't need comparisons. Both are valid. And whichever one you prefer is up to you, because it just comes down to preference and not objective quality.

  19. fresusjeak1

    It's ancient Spanish from Catalana (dates renaissance era in 1540's) The "Riu Riu Chiu" may throw you off thinking it's Portuguese, when it is actually meant to mimic the sound of a nightingale.

  20. SuperYellowGirl

  21. mkp823

    @13Naru13 That one IS phenomenal! (Who'd a thunk they could sing like that?)

  22. Lusty And Busty

    Not my favorite version. I hate when people attempt to pop'alize a great classic song.

  23. preocu

    Henrique Souza

    espanhol arcaico

  24. vallettam

    @alejandro199614

    Uhh, it's Spanish. And Portuguese doesn't have any Spanish words. It has Portuguese words, that are similar to Spanish and vice versa.

  25. Richard Gillard

    Sounds like they borrowed from Bruce Cockburn - His is the best version I've heard to date, he does it a bit faster. Good guitar playing on this version tho!! Before I got his "Christmas" album I'd never heard it

  26. Ether

    I'd have to say, these guys got a lot of inspiration from the McDades. ;D

  27. 13Naru13

    This song is meant to be sung by a quartet, not as a solo, and sounds best a capella. Try listening to The Monkees' great simple version.

  28. Brian Pronton

  37. audie garver

    This is an old song referring to a story about Jesus and Mary... it's often heard sung in old Spanish with Latin rhythm often sung in Madrigals.
