Sixpence None The Richer - Love, Salvation, The Fear Of Death Lyrics

Well I'm staring straight into the face of hell
You're so close and you can't even tell
I'm so wrapped up inside
Because I don't have much to love

Horrified I reel from pits unseen
Falling off my pedestal of plentiful deeds
As it crumbles down on top of me
I contemplate my lack of love

[Chorus]
Come and save my soul
Before it's not too late
I'm not afraid to admit
How much I hate myself

All these gongs and cymbals ring inside my head
Surrendered body to the flames has singed the skin
Can't speak in tongues and even if I could it's nothing
Because I cannot love

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
Well I'm staring straight into the face of hell
I'm so close and I can't even tell
I'm so afraid I'll amount to nothing
'cause I don't have much to love
Much to love
Much to love
Much to love

This is my “heart song” meaning that if I can choose one song on earth to sum up my life, it’s this one. And it’s been this one since I heard it for the first time at age 10. This last February (2/28/18), i had a huge turning point in my life. My life derailed to a point that I found myself sobbing drunk with my face in the toilet...singing this song. Life changed that night and I’m still reeling 7 months later. I have shamelessly committed loveless acts, and also walked around with no shame or love in my bearing or in my heart when I damn well should have.

All of this to say, don’t give up on God. If you give up on yourself, then give up. But don’t throw yourself and your life away because you are powerless to fix yourself or overcome your mistakes or circumstances. God’s still here. He’s always been here and He always will be. If you find yourself at the end of yourself, that’s where you throw your hands up so He can pick you up.

That’s where I’m at, and this from someone whose headstone could’ve read xx/xx/1990–3/1/2018

This song makes a lot more sense if one reads 1 Corinthians 13 and Luke 14: 26ff.... =)

    I love this band.

April 1999, I was pretty unfamiliar with Sixpence. Went to see them for the first time - performing in the basement of an old church in Westport (in Kansas City). I went mainly because of the popularity of 'Kiss Me', which was then climbing the charts. I was basically just expecting to hear that kind of cutesy, easy-going stuff. Well, you can imagine my astonishment when they opened the show with THIS song! I mean, to be introduced to this for the first time ever - in a LIVE setting, at FULL BLASTING concert volume - being played the way Matt and the boys were playing it back then - it just blew my ever-loving mind.

    Fan since that moment!

    o.... ....

yes, the New Earth Coffee HOuse. Sixpence was there about every 6 months on average.

    o.... ....

I purchased their album in 2004 cause of kiss me.  I used to work for an insurance company and the song reminded me so much of that place (work).  Anyways, this summer (2018) I wanted to listen to those albums that I bought but never really listened to much........... I picked their album and I felt in love with the rest of the songs, as a matter of fact I skip kiss me now.

    o.... ....

they played back in May 1995 at my old church when this album was coming out

I forget that her music is inspired by christianity. but that doesn't mean that as a non-christian, that i cannot find this song to be anymore beautiful. very well written and performed.

  10. C.... A....

    Great songs!

Forget that they are Christian for a moment. (As I have to since I am not a Christian anymore.) They're a tremendous band. Matt Slocum is a brilliant musician, period.

    D.... D....

Ya Daniel I agree the band is awesome. I think i just like the pure simple happy vibe their songs give off. You know Jesus loves you Daniel, and i smile writing it to you becuase he really does.He waits for you

    D.... D....

You may of forgotten God , but he will never forget you.

    D.... D....

I'm not religious myself but I appreciate the sincerity and earnestness of Sixpence's songs. I don't need to forget they're a Christian band to enjoy them.

  13. K.... T....

  17. w.... ....

Musicianship was really high on this album, far more interesting than their later works

  18. D.... ....

@thesomeone3211- What does J.J. Plasencio do now?

    D.... ....

I think I heard he's in charge of music at some church somewhere.

  19. a.... ....

What is eironic [and parasitic] about this song is that her lack of love for anything and hate of self is exactly what the Gospels require of believers.  Otherwise there is no incentive to believe in this scam.

    @NettwerkMusic

Death is temporary.  Life is temporary.  You are a set of bubbles.

    a.... ....

Thank you very much for your Pseudo Psycho Babel

I really miss this lineup! I've been a fan of Liegh and Matt since even before Sixpence was formed (went to church/high school together with them), and I have really enjoyed all of their music. Matt is a brilliant song writer and Liegh's voice is so soothing and pleasant, but there was just something about this particular lineup, both live and in the studio, that they've never been able to quite recapture. Both in terms of energy and just the musical dynamic, I think this was the high point for the band. TBM was such a good album. Also, it sounds very "nineties alternative" but at the same time, I think, has aged very well.

    X.... A....

Yeah, Tess Wiley really did a good job on this one. She spiced it up a little. Very energetic. (:

  21. J.... S....

J.j plasencio ill even prove it

  23. S.... R....

  24. V.... ....

So, who is your friend's dad? T.J. Behling, J.J. Plasencio (the bassist on this song), or Justin Cary?

  25. N.... P....

    I call bullshit

  26. J.... B....

    My favorite song ever

  27. J.... S....

My friends dad was in this band and his dad was the BASS player it's hard to believe

    J.... S....

  28. J.... I....

  29. i.... ....

very hard to find this song, my old CD doesn't work anymore. great song.

  30. O.... ....

  31. m.... ....

When this song first came out many years ago when I was a teenager, I loved it and thought "Cool song!" Nothing more. Hearing it now again for the 1st time in about 14 years after I had forgotten about it, I am very shaken. It's like this song is describing exactly my current state - who would have thought? Wow.

  32. k.... ....

Good song, but I more like the mellow live version

  33. M.... ....

    What an awesome Bass line

  34. J.... ....
