Sisters Of Mercy, The - Alice Lyrics

Alice pressed against the wall
So she can see the door
In case the laughing strangers crawl and
Crush the petals on the floor

Alice in her party dress
She thanks you kindly
So serene
She needs you like she needs her tranqs
To tell her that the world is clean
To promise her a definition
Tell her where the rain will fall
Tell her where the sun shines bright
And tell her she can have it all
Today
Today

Pass the crystal spread the Tarot
In illusion comfort lies
The safest way the straight and narrow
No confusion no surprise

Alice in her party dressed to kill
She the thanks you turns away
Needs you like she needs her pills
To tell her that the world's okay
To promise her a definition
Tell her where the rain will fall
Tell her where the sun shines bright
And tell her she can have it all
Today
Today

Alice
Don't give it away
Nooo

The 1st and last and always album , was the first album I got by them , and still my favorite of all they're works.
Like the tinderbox album by Siouxie , I got both on cassette that's how long ago it was.
David Bowies was also embraced by the goth community back then , I bet Alot of people didn't know that. He was considered glam rock but Bowie was not only ahead of his time , he was in a class all his own. This is why very little will type cast themselves by saying we are a goth band , coldwave or a Nintendo core band.
Not only will you have to live up to the ideal of what people believe these bands should sound like but you also have the pressure of having to be very good . And if you set this in stone
You will be expected to continue that way with being able to change and experiment with different genres. So yeah goth bands of the past were always misunderstood by most that weren't goth , and goth bands are not made they are born.
That is to say they never labeled themselves, they did what they loved and they remained true to they're own lifestyle , and then they were named goth by the community that saw something in theyre art that said goth. Being goth myself I understand why they were so misunderstood , it reminds me of a witch hunt.
But few talk about the intelligence of this community and the diversity that allowed them to Express themselves in many ways like industrial, romantic, and occult. I found myself to be partial to the latter lol. The intellectual capacity that is seen in the lifestyle is as deep as an ocean
It can be seen in the art , the music , the clothes, the literature like edgar Allen Poe to love craft to hammer films to the incredible fashion. A society not ruled by ego and pride like in todays pop genres but creative contributions proving its far from dead.

Goh....how I miss those days. And they will never come back.

Never will I be able to give a physical album to my yet to be born son or grandchildren, as CD's probably would not exist anymore....perhaps still LP's, but I doubt it. Everything will be streaming and on your phones...

When my oldest brother gave this album during my difficult teenage years, and this song burst out of my stereo, I was in total awe...and a fan for life. Still one of my favorites of all time.

  13. h.... ....

Hell Yeah I'm 44 years old and this band was kicking I didn't even know what goth was till years later. I was always into punk, metal and "goth" per say at a young age and dug it. Just loved dark moody music and it worked for me. Didn't care what it was called...as long as it was dark and moody and or tough. A++++

  14. J.... D....

I'm very young, and I'm glad I found out about this type of music anyways.

  15. F.... A....

    Loovvvoooo as usual ;-)

  27. S.... C....

Goth music was a term probably conjured up by the media however i was more than happy with it, it suited the genre as far as i was concerned. (from a 49 year old Goth) 🖤

  28. M.... L....

Je suis un guerrier, mes larmes sont des couteaux, mon cœur bat comme un fusil d’assaut, mon sang coule comme des rivières d’argents 🖤🖤

  32. K.... L....

Woaa Always loved this song ...

  33. E.... N....

Was heavily rocking this while driving around with punk rockers in about 1999, twenty years after it came out. Twenty years later I am having a memory about a song I used to listen to twenty years ago that was already twenty years old. WRAP YOUR HEAD AROUND HOW LONG GOTH AND PUNK HAS EXISTED. May blow mind.

  34. S.... M....

One of my favorite songs ❤ You revisit songs and they just spark something new all over again.

  35. D.... L....

I often wonder what Alice's party dress looks like. Floral? McQueen? McCartney? Galtier?

  36. D.... T....

    This is a great song!

  37. S.... B....

I'm more of a metal/rock fan, but sofm are quality

  38. C.... R....

    Sisters forever! <3

  39. n.... ....

The most rocking, thumping, unrelenting Sisters song for me. A powerhouse of a track on the dance floor.

  40. I.... a....

Goth was a term originally spun off the music press's attempt to categorize The Lords of The New Church. With Brian James and Stiv Bators in the band the punk rock legacy was off the charts, but the music was nothing like punk.  The church imagery brought gothic out as an easy label which was tossed about on anybody releasing dark, atmospheric music that avoided the top forty. The term had more validity as a personal identity label than a musical one. Someone who was 'goth' was likely to appreciate the sisters of mercy, but the band wasn't necessarily a goth outfit.

  41. G.... L....

Intro reminds me of original DOOM. Knew it had been spawned from minds with good taste.

  42. M.... ....

    Benoit Hamon brought me here

  43. M.... B....

    Perfect!

  44. T.... B....

Eldritch, Marx, Adams, Gunn, Dr Avalanche. Accept no substitute.

  45. h.... ....

I'm 45 and still dig this band 100% Hell to the yes! A++++ Always and forever!

  46. D.... C....

    Still a masterpiece

  47. T.... P....

Tear you apart reminds me of this song. Makes sense?

    T.... P....

Tear you apart by she wants revenge?.

  48. I.... H....

As an OG (old goth, listening to it when it was still being called death rock), I watched the development in the name from death rock to gothic rock to simply goth. The fact that a band or a song came out before the name for its genre existed does not mean that the band or song don't fit that genre. Bauhaus, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, etc. all existed before any of the above terms were coined. Joy Division ceased to exist before any of those terms came into existence ... it was labeled "post-punk", as were the other bands I mentioned before the above terms were coined. But without the sort of sound Joy Division helped to create, there would have been no goth ... And the music of all of these bands became popular staples at goth dance clubs. I saw all of this happen through the late 1970s-early 1980s.

  49. T.... C....

this song sounds as fresh as it did in the 80s FIRST, LAST and ALWAYS! proud to be working in Wakefield!

This song is one of those songs
    With one of those lyrics

    a.... ....

    Alice, don’t give it away

    a.... ....

    @Paul Murray No!!!

    a.... ....

@Paul Murray Can you re-type that with the echo effect?

    a.... ....

    @Delph1s millennial snowflake. Congrats.

  88. u.... ....

Really not bad to say it was done on a Roland TR-606, a BOSS distortion and through cheap amps and recorded to a 4-track (probably?)...

  89. M.... ....

My parents love this song , specially when they were young. Thanks to them, i listen this song right now. Fucking Great song. 80's is the best part of the music History. The beat is incredible.

  90. w.... 3....

Heard an interview where Jon Savage told Kurt Cobain, who expressed a keen interest in British ''goth' music, to not bother with Sisters of Mercy because they were '''cheesy'' ... This?... Cheesy?... Nooo!!

    w.... 3....

Well, truth be told the early Sisters was made on the cheap and had a bit of cheez wiz but not too much. The later Dr. Avalanche was a marked improvement at least. To me it's part of the charm, like early Cabaret Voltaire. Early, cheap and quite nasty.
