Sinead O'Connor - Lord Franklin Lyrics

We were homeward bound one night on the deep
Swinging in my hammock I fell asleep
I dreamed a dream and I thought it true
Concerning Franklin and his gallant crew

With 100 seamen he sailed away
To the frozen ocean in the month of May
To seek a passage around the pole
Where all poor sailors do sometimes go.

Through cruel hardships they vainly strove
Their ships on mountains of ice was drove
Only the Eskimo with his skin canoe
Was the only one that ever came through

In Baffin's Bay where the whale fish blow
The fate of Franklin no man may know
The fate of Franklin no tongue can tell
And Lord Franklin among his seamen do dwell

And now my burden it gives me pain
For my Lord Franklin I'd sail the main
Ten thousand pounds I would freely give
To know Lord Franklin, and where he is.

A beautiful rendition, so much emotion. The last verse is so powerful for anyone suffering a loss..... I just want to hear Sinead sing it without interruptions...

  4. I.... ....

The best cover of this song- some say English versions are better emotionless dirges.

  5. M.... ....

    Was that Donal Lunney?

  6. A.... B....

For anyone wondering this is from the extras on the DVD of her live performance 'Live in Dublin - Good Night, Thank You' which supports the CD title Sean-Nos Nua (her best in my view). The extras are worth the price alone because we get to see/hear her and the musicians talk about their inspiration and experience in Ireland during the recording. I picked it up for $6.99 from Amazon and it is better than any DVD I own based on the content. The production values are great but for a few minor audio flaws yet it is a must own for a fan of Sinead and the musicians who work with her.

PlanktoniusRex yes your right the DVD is amazing and one of her best albums I love it her voice is beautiful along with Christy of course she was born to sing the Dublin concert is very special I still watch it often I love Irish traditional music it chills me out💚sean-nos-nua is just perfect.i am Welsh fan💚🌈🙏

  14. E.... H....

I totally agree.. I am ever more moved each time I hear her sing..Tto sing so clearly while sionging so softly and yet still carry that emotion, never becoming "maudlin'" or over -sentimental..wonderful I love her soul

  15. S.... R....

I love you, Sinead. I love this beautiful song.

  16. r.... ....

whoops. Dint mean to vote ;->
It's not Renbourne's arrangement, and it's not Gaelic.
"Lady Franklin's Lament" (a.k.a. "Lord Franklin" "The Sailor's Dream") (Roud 487) (Laws K9) is a broadside ballad indexed by George Malcolm Laws, commemorating the loss of Sir John Franklin's British Arctic Expedition of 1845. It may have been published as a broadside as early as 1852, allegedly written by Jane Griffin (Lady Franklin), Sir John's widow.

  17. r.... ....

she is wonderful, and has a remarkable voice. but I wish she's known the song before - perhaps it would have kept her faithful to the original lyrics.

  18. j.... ....

Dónal Lunny at the mixing desk ?

  19. B.... T....

I consider S O'C the greatest living female vocalist of the generation.

  20. A.... P....

    An exquisitely beautiful rendition.

  21. S.... M....

I'm so sad she's ruining this divine voice. I'am afraid this gift is lost forever and that's too bad for all of us, I mean, I really think her voice is (was?) a gift to mankind...

  22. K.... ....

Divine artist ... angel voice ... love you Sinead xxx

  23. e.... ....

I so agree with you. A freakin' masterpiece.

  24. B.... T....

In my humblest of opinions, I have considered S O'C the greatest female vocalist of my lifetime

  25. D.... F....

I guess we have to remember that Sinead is not an on the surface type of person. She sings songs as she feels them, and as her convictions grow in any direction she is going to Sing them. My wife and I love you Sinead.

    D.... F....

Denis F your right she's amazing she's got away of getting in my heart she's delicate and very special💚🌈🙏

  26. w.... ....

Well, I wouldn't know, because I'm not from Ireland. But I do know that her earlier music was much better. :)

  27. l.... ....

Yes, you're right, religion and Irish anything don't much go together, anymore....

  28. w.... ....

I wish she would record a new album with Irish traditionals again, instead of those religious stuff. Her renditions of the Irish tradiotionals were much, much better than the newest album.

  29. g.... ....

You obviously haven't heard Pentangle's version.

    g.... ....

pentangle`s isnt a patch on hers.

  30. s.... ....

    Your highest and best, Miss......

  31. o.... ....

    It's from the album "Sean-Nós Nua" 2002

  32. b.... ....

Your an Angel put here to to test us. I know at times it is crazy but you are here for us, even if we don't know it. Love ya bonny lass!

  33. y.... ....

No she didn't. A great Book about his last Expedition is "The Terror" by Dan Simmons, which also contains fantasy elements but it gives an excellent sight on how hard daily life on the Erebus and Terror must have been.

    Great Song btw.

  34. s.... ....

This is absolutely the most stunning & beautiful song I've ever heard! What a gift to humanity she is!

  35. o.... ....

her best album .... she's d.lunny got the best from her, out in the light

  36. b.... ....

Adore this woman. Her songs, her voice, her big beautiful eyes, her deep soul, her passion, her anger, her intelligence! What a true inspiration! What a fighter she is!

  37. L.... B....

    I'd like "Nothing copares 2 U"

  38. T.... C....

I have this cd and what a cd it is. Worth every penny. Fantastic voice!

  39. j.... ....

Thank you Cerridwen. I hadn't seen this before. Another example of what a true artist Sinnead is--as if we didn't know before. But it's really amazing to see how she works...talking about "inhabiting" a song since she is able (by doing that) to pull me also into a song and let me feel the same emotions (yes even to tears.) I love her for that, her integrity, and her bravery.

  40. D.... I....

i don't care for this woman's politics and quirks. But she is an Irish treasure, diva, legend and simply has a gift from God. Live at Vicar Street is one of the best gigs I think I have ever seen. The woman performs with pure, raw, sexual energy !

  41. S.... E....

Favourite song of mine. What an amazing version.
