Sinatra, Frank - My One And Only Love Lyrics

The very thought of you makes
My heart sing
Like an April breeze
On the wings of spring
And you appear in all your splendor
My one and only love

The shadows fall
And spread their mystic charms
In the hush of night
While you're in my arms
I feel your lips so warm and tender
My one and only love

The touch of your hand is like heaven
A heaven that I've never known
The blush on your cheek
Whenever I speak
Tells me that you are my own

You fill my eager heart with
Such desire
Every kiss you give
Sets my soul on fire
I give myself in sweet surrender
My one and only love

The blush on your cheek
Whenever I speak
Tells me that you are my own
You fill my eager heart with
Such desire
Every kiss you give
Sets my soul on fire
I give myself in sweet surrender
My one and only love

My one and only love

I would like to know what the 42 dislikes don't like about this song

  2. M.... L....

The always melodic, passionate and beautiful voice of Frank Sinatra has left us in real life, but thankfully, we have his recordings to listen to forever! Thank you for posting so we can love them NOW and for all time.

  3. M.... L....

Another beautiful ballad by the ballad-master, Sinatra. I love this tender song! Such great lyrics.

  4. R.... F....

i've searched YouTube for many many renditions of this song. Dean Martin has to be one of the very best. Roy Hamilton provides an upbeat version which is excellent.

    R.... F....

Be sure to listen to the versions by Ella Fitzgerald & John Coltrane, Roy.

perhaps the greatest ballad ever written. shockingly gorgeous. popular American music has fallen a long way from this. I guess everything has.

  8. s.... ....

Coltrane and Hartman came, saw and conquered this song! None Better!

  9. M.... B....

Listening to "Nancy for Frank" on Siriusly Sinatra satellite radio -- the Valentine's Day show -- and playing, as I type this, is this song -- one of my favorite ballads. I'd forgotten that this was another song that (like "Don't Worry 'bout Me") might not have seen the light of day without our favorite singer's intervention -- till jazz giants could work their instrumental magic with the wonderful melody.
Thanks Catman916 for sharing this version (with an impressive "views" total of 1.6 million) and for the informed, introductory note.

    Wikipedia says . . .

"My One and Only Love" is a popular song with music written by Guy Wood and lyrics by Robert Mellin. Published in 1952, it is a conventional 32-bar song with four 8-bar sections, including a bridge ("Type A" or "AABA" song structure). (Almost) invariably performed as a ballad, it has an aria-like melody that is a challenge to many vocalists; in the key of C, the song's melody extends from G below middle C to the second D above middle C.

The song originated in 1947 as “Music from Beyond the Moon” with music by Guy B. Wood and lyrics by Jack Lawrence. Vocalist Vic Damone recorded this version in 1948, but it was unsuccessful.

In 1952, Robert Mellin wrote a new title and lyrics for the song, and it was republished that year as “My One and Only Love”. When Frank Sinatra recorded it in 1953 with Nelson Riddle, first released as B-side to his hit single "I've Got the World on a String" (Capitol 2505), it became known. Then popular saxophonist Charlie Ventura saw the song's "jazz potential" and recorded the first instrumental version in the very same year.[1]

As an instrumental jazz standard, it remained predominantly a song for tenor saxophonists. Ben Webster recorded the tune with Art Tatum in autumn 1956. John Coltrane recorded his version with vocalist Johnny Hartman ten years after Ventura in 1963 (John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman). This was followed by Sonny Rollins in 1964. He re-recorded it in 1977, this time on soprano saxophone. Later interpretations came from Chico Freeman, Michael Brecker, and Joshua Redman.

Vocal renditions of "My One and Only Love" were recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Mathis, Doris Day, Mark Murphy, Chet Baker and Kurt Elling. Cassandra Wilson turned the song into an up-tempo swing number.

  10. J.... B....

Good ....of course but I think the best version is from John
    Coltrane with Johnny Hartman .

  11. M.... M....

MFSB instrumental version is great.Try it you'll like it.

  12. M.... C....

The greatest love song of all times

  13. a.... m....

It's so hard to listen to this song when "My One and Only Love" was found at a later age, and yet still, we cannot be together. But somehow, I cannot help but listen and remember. I torture myself by letting this song touch my deepest emotions, and yet hearing Sinatra's voice "is like heaven" so I keep playing this song over and over...and always will.

  14. N.... E....

1963-64: 1963: My first woman was in this year. Her name was "Murl", and I believe that is the spelling. She was "all lady", even though 15 then. Her parents were normal, good, red-blooded, patriotic Americans. We were getting pretty close but, one night she danced with another guy and I, being jealous and very immature, broke off contact. We saw each other one more time after that. It was not very long that I began missing her and missing her a lot. Was never able to get another date with her, even though I did not give up for at least a year and a half. Murl, I never told you that you are the most beautiful woman on this earth. I should have told you that night that you called me "Dearest" -- my sincere, deepest apologies.
Murl, where are you? Can't find you. Please look me up. You knew me by my birth name. Know that you remember the name. I still remember what you told me so able to tell a fraud. I want to see you again now even though we will she each other forever in that most beautiful, real, physical Place.

They were friends : Charles Aznavour - For me, formidable (version stéréo, 1966)

  20. F.... ....

They don't make music like that anymore but Sting did a wonderful performance singing it for Leaving Las Vegas. This song also makes me think of the era of the music from Rear Window.

  25. S.... T....

Thank you very much it is just beautiful !

  26. L.... C....

He SUBTLY works his vocals from start to finish - carrying you through the depth of the song's meaning.

    Subtle
    1.
in a manner that is so delicate or precise as to be difficult to analyze or describe.
"the script subtly shifts in tone from comedy to tragedy"
    2.
in a clever and indirect way, in order to achieve something.
"he would prattle on about something else for a while before subtly raising the question again"

  27. T.... B....

Muito bonito, afinal Frank Sinatra é a voz.

  34. F.... A....

Mi Primer y Único Amor, La voz de Frank Albert Sinatra, Mi Único, e inigualable cantante dueño de una voz cálida y dulce, me encanta "El Ojos Azules"

  35. V.... B....

    this is bealtiful

    V.... B....

It's a wonderful example of Frank Sinatra's mastery of the ballad, Joao.

  36. B.... F....

What a lovely and romantic jazz it is

  37. C.... M....

I don't get it. I hear no passion in his singing. Technical competence, i guess. and his voice itself is among the most pleasing of all male voices. But his phrasing is predictable and uninspired. in my opinion. Same with Ella. I don't ever feel a thing with either of them. Sounds nice, though.

    C.... M....

I understand what you mean . Perhaps Frank Sinatra
is overestimated in this song where I feel some
detachment close to indifference ....kind of F.S.'s
trade mark .Here in France we are lucky enough
to hear an excellent crooner still in activity despite
he is getting old and he is easily in the upper class .
His name is Mike DURHAM ....and you can make
an idea looking on 03AMCT . Salutations !

  38. F.... V....

This song is both beautiful and sad, like almost all great songs and performed a prayer by two genius of music: Sinatra and Riddle. I think I don't need to say anything else.

  39. a.... m....

Wow. This song is incredibly beautiful. Frank delivers it as only he can do...timelessly. xo

  40. I.... R....

    der oberboss.

  41. O.... ....

One`s eyes could get misty when songs like these was about love, heartache and everything positive and beautiful. Not the garbage songs about rappers, metal and all that crap. We used to respect women then starting from our mothers, sisters and usually place them on a pedestal. Not ho`s, the cunts, the gats. Women too in those days demand respect. Ah the good all days

I think I like Frank's voice best during these years, early in the 50's. Great stuff.

    S.... H....

That's very interesting, quite a few people agree with you.  I think his voice was sweeter then, but I preferred the older, more mature voice of his in later years.  But whenever, over his long career, he was simply the best.

  46. A.... M....

In commemoration of Sinatra's centennial I'm very proud to announce the highly anticipated release of my very first official music video Starring actors Annie Halll and PremRock in "My One and Only Love" Enjoy! #myoneandonlylove #love #stevenchera #sinatra100 #sinatra https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXAHGNrtE-Y

  48. P.... D....

Johnny Hartman, Ella Fitzgerald and even Sting have recorded this immortal Guy Wood and Bob Mellin song. (Sting's recording played over the closing credits of Leaving Las Vegas, one of the great weepies.) Frank's recording has the merit of Nelson Riddle's strings and the merit of Frank's  crafty phrasing. When a man describes a lady as 'She was the love of my life' then it's this song that sums up the memory. (Jack Haggerty)

    P.... D....

He also introduced the song -- which like some others ("Don't Worry 'bout Me") would never have seen the light of day without Frank -- recording it, then performing it as only he could 'live' and in person. Please see my note (above) posted this day. Thanks for your comment, Paul Duncan.

  49. L.... V....

Leaving Las Vegas theme song....Perfect, a real LOVE SONG !

  50. J.... A....

I like Frank, but I think Coltrane's and Hartman's version is better.  Colltrane's sax is haunting.

    J.... A....

Facts.....and it's not even close. Coltrane and Hartman came, saw and conquered the song!

  51. j.... s....

I never really paid much attention to this song until my mother died ." My one and only love " engraved inside her wedding band and also my fathers .He died in 1979 and her in 2011 . "My one and only love " was also engraved on her stone at her grave . True love never dies .

    j.... s....

A beautiful story! I am sorry to hear about your parents and I hope that as time goes on it will get easier for you. Thanks for sharing this lovely story!

    j.... s....

    Thank you so much !

    j.... s....

    You are so welcome!! :)

    j.... s....

Thank you jojo studrock for sharing about a song you "never really paid much attention to" -- until the death of your Mom. And that "My One And Only Love" was engraved inside your parents' wedding bands -- as well as "engraved on the stone over her grave." Yes, as you say, "True love never dies." Thanks again for posting, jojo

  52. G.... P....

    Great Franky!!!!!!

  53. T.... ....

I have also heard the another song...same tune but different lyrics. Music from beyond the moon.  I prefer this version's lyric. It has a haunting effect on me. Vic Damone sang this version but cant find it in the YouTube

    T.... ....

That's because it had an earlier lyric by Guy Wood. Sinatra introduced this new version with words by . . . well, please see my posting this day for this video. -- Mark B of the frozen North

Grew up listening to all this great music and today I am 68 and still enjoy listening to him sing today !!

    S.... S....

Sadly one of Frank's songs accounts for 1 in 999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999 songs played on the radio today. When the Christmas music starts playing, in October.....?????, you'll hear one song of his much more often. Let it snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow.

    S.... S....

@Exotic Creature But that's why God gave us Youtube. For these and other reasons Lord we pray: THESE are the good old days.

  56. J.... K....

I LOVE THIS SONG, EVERY VERSION FROM STING TO FRANK

  57. S.... B....

Frank Sinatra is my favorite recording artist and this is a Great recording,,,I do however  like Johnny Hartman's version better and its Coltrane and the arrangement and Hartman and all of it..But this is music!!! For me..Its Music!

  58. d.... ....

Every time I hear Frank sing songs recorded in this period, the middle 1950`s I am reminded of what Nelson Riddle said about him then"His voice reminds me of a beautiful, finely tuned `cello."Frank, although not a "nice" man at times, was surely touched by genius. As a previous post said, the singer and voice of the (20th)century.

  59. d.... ....

OOOHHH Frank, wish you were still here.Us fellas, burned  by love, can identify  and  strip bare our love, and soul by this song.RIP Frank, You are remembered..

  60. r.... ....

Check the version by John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman. Johnny Hartman is as fine a singer as Sinatra and there is the bonus of hearing one of the best sax players in Coltrane.

    r.... ....

I have also uploaded John Coltrane's and also Ella Fitzgerald fine version.

    r.... ....

+rjmins nadie como Sinatra para interpretar las canciones, pero esta versión de Johnny Hartman es sublime

    r.... ....

+rjmins Sorry brother, but there will only be one Sinatra. The most versatile male singer in the history of music.

    r.... ....

+rjmins yes johnny hartman had one of the fine voices. a great base baritone and is unmistakeable. but, sinatra applied an innocence to the delivery and has that appeal. both had great voices. also, frank could turn a lot of musicians into junior coltranes.

  61. z.... ....

Writing a song inspired by this one. I can never beat the person who wrote this song ;(

Anyways, I also sing, and Frank Sinatra songs are something I really like to sing. This is one of the best so far XD

  62. 1.... ....

I love you, in my arms,  hmmmmmmmmmy Isabel!

  63. R.... ....

Wow...just wow. So romantic. A song to dance to. *Deep sigh*

    R.... ....

+RainbowZen999 As a romantic man I do know just what you mean.. A few lines I just wrote for you and your Deep sigh...
I saw our love in the pre-dawn sky,
Came home to share, you do know why.

Could not bear to lose you, as You Have My Heart,
But then you have known this, right from the start.

You know when I sleep, you are 'My Sweetest Dreams',
And When I'm awake, your every thought, so it seems.

I'll not hide my love, it's yours for the taking,
It Is To You, With My Words, Sweet Love I Am Making.

So Here's a Really Big Hug, and a Kiss On Your Neck,
Not trying to rhyme this, Just Loving You, by heck..

  64. M.... V....

The Johnny Hartman version is the best

    M.... V....

Agree. But he had Coltrane. Not many singers can outperform Sinatra, but Hartman was one of the few exceptions

    M.... V....

I find your comment after i have just written twice the
same feeling . Welcome Michael ....and health and
fortune for you with the new year 2019 !

    M.... V....

I thought the same until I heard Sarah Vaughn.....wow

  65. J.... P....

Perfection.  Frank always acknowledged the song writers and knew the debt he owed them.

  66. n.... r....

Never bored to listen to this wonderful music. I also feel grateful to your information about the song. We also have to give a big hands to the song writers as much as the singer. Many thanks for sharing.

    n.... r....

You're welcome, Nopa. I always try to provide pertinent information including the same writers and record companies.

  67. T.... ....

That is hilarious. I have read his autobiography where he cheated on his wife ALOT before abandoning her and the family altogether to run around with tramps. What's more, he married FOUR times, too. :P

    T.... ....

Frank, Sinatra never wrote an autobiography! but many bios of him WERE written, both true and untrue, good and bad. That's what happens when you're famous! Many people have multiple marriages! There is always two sides to the story. Frank Sinatra was with his last wife over 20 years when he died, and he was one of the most generous celebrities ever, but people don't know it because he wanted it that way, but he gave away hundreds of thousands of dollars to those in need, some of whom he only heard about, besides footing bills and taking care of debts of friends, band members, but he NEVER talked about it, ever.

  68. d.... i....

i usually come to videos like this to have meaningful conversations with intellectuals while listening to beautiful music, then i have to return to.... the REST of you tube *sigh*

  69. S.... B....

Ironic, my true love looked a bit like him & he sang Frank's music to me. Sometimes in Italian. I miss my love so much.

  70. M.... L....

Frank cannot be compared with anyone!  He was one of a kind, none before or since has been that great! He was very simply, THE VOICE OF THE CENTURY.

  71. r.... D....

How can you compare Frank and Dino!!!??? some days you want a steak and another day a pork chop (No disrespect here) just trying to make an example...get it? LOL

  72. L.... T....

    He was fairly adequate. LOL

  73. C.... L....

    Thank you.

  74. G.... ....

THE REAL TRUE KING!!!!, BELLA!! PERFECTO!!!; FRANK!!!!! <3

  75. F.... B....

Frank is all out singing on this..big arrangement too.

  76. S.... H....

I don't know if y'all know this but Dean sang this and he did it better than Frank did in fact Dino was the better singer than Frank not disrespecting Frank however....his rendition is probably here

    S.... H....

I saw both in person and believe me....Frank was one of the best...while Dino was simply good

    S.... H....

They both did a great job in singing Dean was my paison his family came from the same place in Italy as my parents, Frank has been on my list since i was a kid.

    S.... H....

    Are you for REAL?????

    S.... H....

    Are you for real???

    S.... H....

Frank is great ....no doubt but I prefer John Coltrane's
with Johnny Hartman's version of this romantic song .

  77. C.... D....

My One and Only Love - John Coltrane

    C.... D....

    much better than Sinatra

  78. R.... G....

There will never be another Frank so smooth and relaxed, never forgotten your music will go on for ever.

    R.... G....

Yes. To coin a song title for Frank: There will never be another you. (He did the best version of that one -- on his final album for Capitol records -- arranged by Axel Stordahl.)

    R.... G....

Agreed! Frank Sinatra, The Voice of the 20th century is alive and thriving in the 21st and I wouldn't be surprised it it will be heard next century also, long after I'm gone!

  79. j.... c....

    A very beautiful song,sung by The Best---Frank Sinatra.mmmmmmm

  80. a.... j....

Sinatra just about reaches perfection in this song.  Impeccable phrasing.  It's the Nelson Riddle arrangement I can't stand.  Give me Sinatra with just a piano, a bass and some drums and that's all you really need.

    a.... j....

I agree with what you said about Frank, but not Nelson. I think that the arrangement adds drama and beauty to the song.

    a.... j....

I can't remember Frank Sinatra recording with a small group. I wish he did.

    a.... j....

Nelson Riddle was a most masterful arranger, and worked with numerous singers. Sinatra loved working with him.  They has a small spat once, but later worked together again.

  81. M.... K....

Johnny Rosenberg (The Rosenberg Trio ft. Johnny Rosenberg) does a nice version of this -- great song!

  82. A.... S....

Wow... what a pretty song!  And he makes it seem so effortless.  What a master!

  83. T.... ....

FRANK Sinatra! Well John, Sinatra here must be in his prime and the song is so beautiful. If I don't have it on my my iPhone music Library, I will add it in about two seconds on December 11, 2013. Thanks for posting this John. Great song, great video!

    T.... ....

It is absolutely one of his greatest recordings, made only a month after he moved  to Capitol. The genius of Nelson Riddle shines through.  This is Sinatra was the first Sinatra album that I bought. It remains one of my favorite albums because of songs such as this one.

  84. J.... S....

The Voice in all his beautiful sounds

  85. T.... ....

One of Sinatra's greatest performances, in part because he doesn't try impose himself on the lyrics or melody. The more he respects a lyric, generally speaking, the better he is. Sometimes, I feel, he struts just a little too much, forgetting how delicate some songs are. But here he is close to perfect.
