Sinatra, Frank - It Happened In Monterey Lyrics

It happened in Monterey, a long time ago
I met her in Monterey, in old Mexico
Stars and steel guitars and luscious lips, as red as wine
Broke somebody's heart and I'm afraid that it was mine

It happened in Monterey without thinking twice
I left her and threw away the key to paradise
My indiscreet heart longs for the sweetheart
That I left in old Monterey

Ah, it happened in Monterey, a long time ago
I met her in Monterey, in old Mexico
Stars, guitars, lips red as wine
Broke somebody's heart and I fear that it was mine

It happened in Monterey and without thinking twice
I left her and I threw away the key to paradise
My indiscreet heart, how it longs for that sweetheart
That I left in old Monterey

So it's 2019 and I feel freaked out to think that he's singing about a crime of passion type of murder in a place where such crimes go unnoticed.. a bad breakup .. rule number one. Never break a mobsters heart.

What a stupid comment, have you even been to Monterrey?

    l.... V....

Smooth as butter. Frank was at his best here.
His Capitol years were his BEST years in my view. He had firm control over pitch, timing, impeccable phrasing and delivery. Only Johnny Mathis could be viewed as Frank's equal if not in fact better because of the incredible range Mathis had.
Frank was the business and I'm proud to be a full-fledged admirer of the man and the gift he shared with us fortunate music lovers.

Happy 100 Birthday. Mr Fran Sinatra 👏🏻➕🙏

  63. O.... T....

Monterrey is such a beautiful and crazy city. Definitely my favorite city in Mexico. Surrounded by mountains in a valley, if you haven't been there you should look it up. It's really the crown jewel of Mexico

    O.... T....

Didier Ivan lol go say that over there. By the way that smell is coming from your mouth

    O.... T....

    Wise guy bro !born there

    O.... T....

roy r Mexico ain’t no joke and it’s quite beautiful. Of course it’s uneducated, biased or stereotyping/racist bs comments. When people actually know that the Mexican cartels are more brutal than terrorist groups like ISIS, you know you don’t fuck around over there. Same with connected guys or just bad mofos in any place of the world. You can get killed, beaten, robbed or even raped or all of the above in any place. The fact is people write or comment shit they’d never say in real life because they know deep down it won’t fly. That’s the thing, you never really know who you’re dealing with. Road rage? Yeah scream at a guy and have him follow you or you him. You think you’ll exchange words or get into just a fist fight. Quite the contrary that dude could have a gun and kill you. That actually happened to my friend’s cousin or friend I believe. Hence why he said be careful or watch your cool. Lots of people surprisingly or more than before have some combat or fighting experience/training. So you think it’s gonna be a just scrap and next thing you know you’re getting choked out put to sleep, knocked out badly or have a serious injury. I say live and let live. Life is way too short and if people wanna talk, let em. It’ll catch up in some shape or form. Anyways have a good one and if you don’t mind me asking where did you grow up or been? My mom and her family are from Juarez. I’ve visited some places in Mexico but not as many as I’d like yet. It’s totally laid back, beautiful and most people are very friendly unlike the states like a plastic one I live in, California. Of course there’s chill people but you know what I mean lol

    O.... T....

I spent two months there in the 70's, and loved it. Every evening, I'd walk around the Zocalo and exchange flirts with the beautiful (and coy) young girls there. Great restaurants, great scenery and most of all, great people. I fear that it may have changed now, with the drug and crime problems that seem to be endemic. It would be a shame, because Monterrey was a jewel.

    O.... T....

@Didier Ivan and you smells like idiot

  64. R.... C....

KalvinEllis "Because the law, my boy, puts us into everything. It's the ultimate backstage pass. It's the new priesthood, baby. Did you know there are more students in law school than lawyers walking the Earth? We're coming out! GUNS BLAZING!!

    K.... ....

  66. R.... C....

    Happy 100th Birthday, Mr. Sinatra!

    R.... C....

+Rossiter Castinado we still share the sentiment, no matter the day. Cheers!

  67. F.... I....

This song refers to Monterrey, Mexico. The RCA Victor 1930 record accounts for the Spanish language title "Pasó en Monterrey" which originally was titled "It Happened in Monterey" because of in English there is no double "r" on names - http://bit.ly/1H682QO

    F.... I....

+Federico Iglesias If you listen to the song, it is obvious that it refers to Monterrey, Mexico. I guess that the spelling with one "r" confused some people.

  68. C.... ....

I've got 50 CDs by Mr. Sinatra, the "King of Sing", and Songs for Swingin' Lovers is one I play quite a bit. Thanks for posting this, Catman!

The original lyrics start with "In my imagination I'm finding consolation somewhere along the Rio Grande.  Sadly I'm reminiscing, madly again I'm kissing
someone along the Rio Grande. "
Rio grande is not even close to California, this song is about Monterrey Mx.

Monterrey in old Mexico is spelled w/TWO 'R's ... love the song, but notice the mis-spelling all the way down.

  83. r.... ....

It should be Monterrey, actually.  The one in Mexico has two r's.

    r.... ....

Not really, no one has ever referred to california as "Old Mexico" ever, ever , not in music, not in literature, not in journalism, NEVER.

    Good one!

  89. S.... S....

    great song

  90. p.... M....

Para los norteamericanos anglos,  sin raíces latinas OLD MEXICO, es México, el país... http://youtu.be/rDpKf5wiadU aquí otra canción donde se incluye la expresión OLD MEXICO refiriéndose a México. OTRA?Aquí hay otra   http://youtu.be/V-9FdWmZqRQ pero,  It is not A BIG DEAL!!! La canción es hermosísima!!!

    p.... M....

excelente punto, tambien la cancion de New York dice "In OLD New York" no significa que sea viejo o que ya no exista, en efecto la expresión OLD es como decir "aquel Mexico, aquel Nueva York" Incluso su apodo "Ol' Blue Eyes" contracción de OLD Blue Eyes "aquellos ojos azules" no "viejos ojos azules"

  91. r.... m....

    Beautiful song

  92. R.... W....

Awesome!...Thanks for putting this out there. Lots easier to get it here than to walk out to the car and get the 8 track.....ooooppss, I mean the cd....I thought I had everything Frank ever made and I find new stuff everyday....

    R.... W....

I recommend the Columbia, Capitol, and Reprise box sets, Rusty, if you want a complete collection. They are expensive, but worth it to the true Sinatra fan.

  93. j.... m....

  95. K.... A....

When Sinatra sings/against Nelson Riddle strings

    K.... A....

You make it sound like a competition, Kevin, rather than a long, wonderful collaboration. In my opinion Nelson liberated Frank from his 1940s style.

    K.... A....

@catman916 It's a line from Van Morrison's Hard Nose the Highway.

    K.... A....

@Kevin Arthur And I think that Van agrees with you.
