@Steve Douglas The original lyrics were Franklin Roosevelt. Obviously Frank was a right-winger who couldn't stomach Franklin's New Deal Policies which lifted millions of Americans out of the Great Depression and into a vibrant middle class.

This song was nicely done in the movie "The Goodbye Girl"....definitely defined the mood, and was the perfect pick for that scene on the roof.  Of course this version by Sinatra is well done as he was his usual best.

Why is it that every time Sinatra did his take on these great songs they became the definitive versions ?, he did have a little help from the great Nelson Riddle of course on this one, Every time I hear him perform the works of Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, Cahn... well its a long list, they seem to have been written just for him.

I think I have the answer .... Frank "grew up" in the Big Band era, and let's face it, in clubs "run" by the Mafia. In a scene like that .... you would get your ___s busted if you overpowered the band backing you. So Frank learned from a very young age .... 19 or so .... how to sing POWERFULLY ..... but not to OVERPOWER the music (the orchestra). Something many .... (most?) modern singers don't understand. He was also extremely good at relaying the meaning and the feeling of the lyrics.

Class......Style.......Charisma.........Magic.............SINATRA .

Every young man during his bachelor years needs to listen thoroughly to this album. No swagger, it's called pure confidence.

 Many times a later take of an original song doesn't quite make the grade. However in this case the 1955 version not only seems to make the grade but perhaps even eclipses Frank's original version from 1942 with TD. Judging from the time period of the recording the orchestration would appear to be from Nelson who uses understated swing with intermittent trumpet flourishes in a deft fashion that builds in intensity as the tune progresses. Frank now a baritone uses his new  vocal abilities with well timed pauses to full effect in conveying to the audience the lighthearted spirit of this great song.
