Sinatra, Frank - Good-Bye Lyrics

I'll never forget you.
I'll never forget you.
I'll never forget how we promised one day,
To love one another forever that way.
We said we'd never say, "Good-bye."

But that was long ago.
Now you've forgotten, I know.
No use to wonder why.
Let's say farewell with a sigh.
Let love die.

But we'll go on living,
Our own way of living.
So you take the high road and I'll take the low.
It's time that we parted,
It's much better so.
But kiss me as you go.
Good-bye.

But that was long ago.
Now you've forgotten, I know.
No use to wonder why.
Let's say farewell with a sigh.
Let love die.

But we'll go on living,
Our own way of living.
So you take that high road and I'll take the low.
It's time that we parted,
It's much better so.
But kiss you as you go.
Good-bye. Good-bye. Good-bye.

(I'm also a fan of EP -- yesterday was his 85th birthday, as you likely know.)

An all-time great song and interpretation. Riddle's arrangement is timeless. Sinatra was born to sing these songs.

This was known as "The Suicide Album" because of the number of suicides that were committed by people listening to this album. He was singing to Ava, who never came back. She was into screwing all the matadors in Spain. Money cannot buy everything.

I'm more impressed with the photos than the song.   Don't get me wrong, the song is great and the best of the best put it together.   I just want to say the photos made it fun.   The last shot.   I wanted to go with him.

2/ You can really hear the pain & angst in Frank's voice on his "torch" albums, reportedly inspired by crazy Ava. I have felt sorry for him, & cried off of "Im A Fool To Want You", not just thinking of Frank pining for Ava, but for my own personal issues . His heartfelt music permeates your very soul. This was a low ebb in Frank's life, & it was reflected in those torch albums. However, at the same time, even though I felt sorry for Frank, I feel strongly, like many others do, that Frank got the payback he deserved at this time. (I know.; I was in a similar situation & thought I was insanely in love). Without thinking of any negative & uncertain consequences (he thought he could do whatever or have whatever he wanted), Mr. Macho let his selfishness, his success & big head (on his shoulders and elsewhere), cause him to lose his family, his dignity, self-esteem, mental health, livelihood, career.... and for what? Im sure Frank asked himself that question over and over.
AvaGardner may have been beautiful and Frank was badly p-whipped, but he knew before he went & married her that she was a wild, low-class, drunken, no-good slut that liked to sleep around, cause unwarranted drama & chaos, & had a violent temper ( the same as himself). Frank was very confused and conflicted, and crazy in that on the one hand, he was trying to tame & dominate Ava, wanting to make her into the housewife he wanted, her role to stay home, take care of him & have his babies. That was a pipe dream. On the other hand, he also wanted the wild, sexy, crazy, exciting Ava as well, but wanted to dominate her. But, the old adage that you cant turn a hoe into a housewife rings true. Frank should have done what most Italian men had a penchant to do; stay with their wives & kids, take care of home first, and keep their sluts strictly on the side as side chicks. Frank knew how to do the balancing act, he just didnt want to. He was so stupidly in love he wanted Ava to be his only woman. Frank fell so deeply in love with Ava, he didnt know whether he was coming (no pun intended!) or going. We have probably all been there, in so deep you cannot get out the abyss you're in. That was Frank. This bitch knew how she had Frank over the moon for her, & she decided to use it to her advantage. I think she did love Frank, but she was known to be a homewrecker, causing rifts in many Hollywood marriages. Frank knew of her reputation for being a hoe, but he didnt care. He wanted her that bad She started putting Frank under pressure to leave Nancy and marry her, even demanding he speak with Nancy in front of her on Nancy's intercom outside her house one night, to confirm he had asked Nancy for a divorce. WTH? If I were Nancy, I would've come outside, kicked that Bitch's ass and jumped on Frank to boot. What kind of disrespectful & shamelesd crap was that? Bringing your other woman to your wife's house to talk to her on her intercom? A very different time in the 1950's. Frank & Ava were lucky Nancy was decent & sane, or she may have deep-sixed them both.
Plus, Frank & Ava fought like cats & dogs, getting into drunken fights & shouting matches in public, in front of friends, at restaurants, everywhere, throwing shit against walls, tearing up their house, etc. Then, they'd follow each fight by making passsionate love to each other (sounds familiar to me). Yes, of course makeup sex was exciting & exhilarating for Frank & Ava (always is). But it sets a sick pattern of behaviour that winds up being not so exciting after awhile; just sick.
Knowing how jealous each of them were, Ava & Frank would intentionally & openly flirt with other men & women, causing both to blow a gasket. Ava was worse than Frank, sometimes sitting on other men's laps in bars right in front of Frank, while looking at him grinning, waiting to see what he'd do. She knew hiw to push his buttons.
They were both two mentally challenged, tirtured & volatile people that, despite their being madly in love, had no business being together. But, they couldnt helo thenselves. When deeply in love, we all can admit that sometimes we do some stupid stuff we wouldnt normally do. I always sat, people deeply in love with someone us usually stuck-on-stupid for awhile. We eventually wake up, smell the coffee and see reality. After the relationship dissolves, hopefully there are lessons learned by both parties where we wont let the drunken stupor of love totally cloud our judgment again. We all will fall in love again, but will be cautious & realistic, and make better choices.
Sometimes I think Ava intentionally took advantage of Frank at times, knowing how much he loved her. I think she loved him too, but not as much as he loved her at the time. Frank was used to getting what he wanted out of the many women he had. Ava taught Frank that wasnt necessarily so; the more Ava rejected him & the wose she treated him, the more he wanted her. And Ava would have returned to Frank quickly if he had treated her like dirt.
Frank & Ava, in love, but never meant to be.

Patricia Walton: Your post to this song is spot on and I thank you for your post. The relationship between Frank and Ms Gardner is best described as gasoline and a match on both sides. As late as 1973 Frank told his friends that he could not get Ms Gardner "...out of my plasma". I submit that every song, especially a ballad, that Frank sang from 1955 to 1998, was sung with his relationship with Ms Gardner in mind. Frank Sinatra fell for and lost Ms Gardner "hard". In the final analysis, however, I submit that Frank Sinatra did come out on top regarding his relationship with Ms Gardner

    P.... W....

Frank and his torch albums and indeed his love for Ava and the pain he suffered actually saved my life so I can never thank him enough. His sadness and the way he sung his songs taught me to sing my own songs. I identified my losses with his and hearing him sing his heart out makes me feel I'm finally understood and heard. Yes I sing the saloon songs often as I can and they are my favourites as they were his. When I sing them well enough or with enough authenticity I can see him watching quietly with that engmatic expression on his face revealing nothing. If I sing really really well he just says "Well done kid. Couldn't have done it better."

    P.... W....

Frank wrote most of "I'm a Fool to Want You". It was his own very personal torch song. As for the rest of the nonsense and nastiness above, it only makes me yearn that much more for Frank's era.

    P.... W....

His honesty and his passion helps us to identify and deal better with our own passions and our loves in life. I like what you wrote and I'm completely on the same page FreeLantz78. I'm a singer myself and the saloon torch songs are my total favourites.

    P.... W....

Very articulate and just about sums it all up. It's good though that through all this crazy toxic relationship stuff some of the best art in the world was produced as a result. You have hit the nail on the head regarding Mr S and poor Ava who sadly died of the alcoholism and never got recovery. He is reported to have cried his eyes out when he heard the news that she had passed. I think it's that extreme passion - even toxic passion that when used in a positive way ie channeled through music can literally transform our lives. Bad crazy things can sometimes be flipped around to turn out good in the end if that makes sense. have a good day X

"Rock & Roll is the most brutal, ugly, degenerate, vicious form of expression it has been my displeasure to hear."
    Francis Albert Sinatra

  34. M.... T....

After 10,000 (probably more) hours of listening to Frank Sinatra, OTL is his finest work.
Every song he sings he GETS IT completely and so does the band. This is perfection in so many ways. Thank you, Frank. You're the best. And you always will be.

  35. K.... ....

Screw the past. Move on to maintain sanity!

  36. P.... W....

Ava may have been considered a nice person by those who knew her, but in truth she was a drunken, loud-mouthed, low-class, cussing, crazy slut who many did not like to be around. Frank was a drunken maniac too, and they fed off each other. Their violent fights were constant, and I do believe Frank had slapped her around a lot (I think she was the type of woman who liked getting roughed up). Fighting was an aphrodisiac for both of them, as it was always followed by wild make up sex. They were crazy, and crazy in love, but even love cant overcome the fact they were no good for each other and couldnt live together.

    P.... W....

Patricia Walton You called that exactly correct...

    P.... W....

From where the hell you people come up with this?

  37. P.... W....

Wow, Kaplan's "The Voice" book, detailed Frank & Ava's very tortured & volatile relationship. Heartwrenching. I felt that both got their just desserts though, and their relationship failed miserably (him leaving his wife & children, Ava pressuring him to do so to marry her) because they went about it in the worst way. Flaunting their affair in public in front of Nancy's face (even while Frank was still living with Nancy) was just cruel & sick. Love is one thing, but they didnt have to smear their illicit affair in Nancy & their kids' faces (Frank knew they would grow up and one day see how horridly he treated their Mom). It's understood why Frank fell hard for the beautiful, sexy as hell & partying bad girl Ava, the total opposite of his wife, but he should have known he couldnt control herb& that it would never work. He was, of couse, led by the other head, not the head on his shoulders, like most men.

  43. R.... J....

Nobody has ever sung better about acute loneliness, than Frank.

Apparently during the recording of this album, Frank's divorce with Ava had
finally taken place. Nelson Riddle's mother and baby daughter had also
    unexpectedly died.

The sense of utter heartbreak shadows all the tracks on this bleak masterpiece.
It speaks volumes Frank said "OTL" was his own personal favorite.

Frank's sublime offering soars, although Linda's version with Nelson Riddle (1983's "What's New") nearly equals.

    M.... N....

I agree. Linda Ronstadt's version of the song was also arranged by Nelson Riddle. Her version is just as good as Frank's version
