Simone, Nina - Mr. Bojangles Lyrics

I knew a man Bojangles
And he danced for you
In worn out shoes
With silver hair, a ragged shirt
And baggy pants, the old soft shoe
He jumped so high, he jumped so high
Then he lightly touched down

I met him in a cell in New Orleans
I was down and out
He looked at me to be the eyes of age
As he spoke right out
He talked of life, he talked of life
He laughed, slapped his leg a step

He said his name, Bojangles
And he danced a lick across the cell
He grabbed his pants
in fettered stance
Oh, he jumped up high
Then he clicked his heels
He let go a laugh, he let go a laugh
Shook back his clothes all around

Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles, dance!

He danced for those
At minstrel shows and county fairs
Throughout the south
He spoke with tears of 15 years
How his dog and him traveled about
His dog up and died, he up and died
After 20 years he still grieves

He said I dance now
At every chance in honky tonks
For drink and tips
But most of the time
I spend behind these county bars
Cause I drinks a bit

He shook his head
And as he shook his head
I heard someone ask him
Please, please

Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles, dance!

Good morning my name is Miss Sarah I live in Miami Florida in a little section called Overtown it is the ghetto today is Winston February 19th the year 2020 the time is 7:03 a.m. this song gives me a nostalgic feeling a feeling that makes me wish I could and would have met mr. Bojangles that's a lot of music in my family I am an Entertainer I have a son born June 1982 of whom I've learned is now a Nina Simone fan I dedicate this song to you knowing that you are a fan of Nina Simone fits with your character and personality of my three children you are the one person I know that is the same year round your reserved laid-back and just cool kudos to you Quincy enjoy Nina Simone's voice is so pure I can hear every word and the arrangement of this song is outstanding what a superb job everyone did

Beautifully done! First time I've really heard it in these tones and so manful from females point of view. Sang on, Lady Blues.

  9. N.... ....

I have to say, I have listened to this song throughout my years trying to “feel” it. Her off-time did it for me. The ending of it musically does not fit the “feel” she and the swing vibe it brought for me.

    N.... ....

I advise you to read the book "En attendant Bojangles" then !! :) (if you can speak French). It's a beautiful story that is highlighted by this song !

    N.... ....

@Nah Nah I do not but it sounds lovely.

  34. k.... g....

This is my favourite version, but I am obviously very much influenced by the first version I have heard by Rhys Ifans. I just love him and his voice and how he sings and it was similar to Nina's. Perhaps that was his favourite version or it can be a coinicidence too. He is singing it the way he feels it and it seems a bit similar to N. Simone's cover. I love this song anyway.
