Simon, Paul - Can't Run But Lyrics

I can't run but
I can walk much faster than this
Can't run but
I can't run but
I can walk much faster than this
Can't run but

A cooling system
Burns out in the Ukraine
Trees and umbrellas
Protect us from the new rain
Armies of engineers
To analyze the soil
The food we contemplate
The water that we boil

I can't run but
I can walk much faster than this
Can't run but
I can't run but
I can walk much faster than this
Can't run but
Oo-we Oo-we

I had a dream about us
In the bottles and the bones of the night
I felt a pain in my shoulder blade
Like a pencil point? A love bite?
A couple was rubbing against us
Rubbing and doing that new dance
The man was wearing a jacket and jeans
The woman was laughing in advance

I can't run but
I can walk much faster than this
Can't run but
I can't run but
I can walk much faster than this
Can't run but

A winding river
Gets wound around a heart. Pull it
Tighter and tighter
Until the muddy waters part
Down by the river bank
A blues band arrives
The music suffers
The music business thrives

I can't run but
I can walk much faster than this
Can't run but
I can't run but
I can walk much faster than this
Can't run but
Oo-we Oo-we

    P.... G....

Thanks - because, you know, the only thing anyone wants to read on Youtube is how people found a video...

    P.... G....

Never! I will not watch liberal political shows. Been listening to this ever since "In the Blue Light" was first released. Paul Simon's incredible talent brought me here!

  26. T.... S....

    Cool ass song!

  28. B.... L....

This is really a unique sound and lovely song! Reminds me of a sting song.He is amazing in all he does!

  29. J.... H....

    beautiful.....

  30. V.... ....

Well, he's managed to ruin my favourite song ever. No comment.

    V.... ....

Apparently you don't know what "no comment" means.

    V.... ....

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I think this is clearly better than the original.

  31. E.... A....

Sometimes re-thinking is over-thinking. This is an interesting experiment in "something different," but not something I'd want to live with. But at this stage, he's earned the right to do whatever mutations he wants with his own material.

    E.... A....

I welcome the new versions, as I welcome the live ones (which are often quite different, e.g. Boy in the Bubble). It's not like it could take away from the original - we'll always have that. I do agree that the simpler versions are often the best, Songbook is a great example of that. But I will say Paul Simon does the best Paul Simon covers. :)

  32. J.... H....

Paul sounds just as good on this track as he did when he originally recorded it 30 years ago.

  33. J.... M....

I love the original version but heard this tonight in Atlanta- yMusic is an incredibly talented group! I feel lucky to have seen this live.

  34. L.... L....

I didn't think it was possible for this song to get any cooler or more beautiful, but WOW!

  35. C.... M....

An American Master. A national treasure. Paul Simon makes me feel patriotic again.

  36. G.... ....

    Superbe

  37. L.... D....

Every song he re-does on stage and on record and in the studio is pure perfection to the human ear!!

  38. M.... ....

Ok now I'm gonna buy it... I'm sold now. Very curious to also hear how Darling Lorraine turned out... minimal seems to work best for Paul, with reimaginings... would be neat to hear him do a 'scratch my back' style album like Peter Gabriel did, with an emphasis on raw simplicity. Especially since his voice is still so expressive.

  39. t.... ....

I'd sooner these re-recordings come as added bonuses to remastered LP's than a seperate LP... yes we sorta get a new LP but in reality we'll only play a short while and return to the LP's the tracks are originally on

  40. C.... L....

Paul Simon is a master at his craft. Thank you for 50 years of creating!!

  41. A.... F....

    Paul simon is amazing

  42. P.... K....

    Great cover as well...

  43. t.... ....

I am SO excited for this album. I loved the original of "Can't Run But," however this arrangement is exquisite. I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of the album.

  44. M.... J....

Saw him performing this new version with YMusic in Las Vegas in May. An absolute honor for me and the highlight of this year.

  45. G.... S....

I also miss the lines "I had a dream about us--in the bottles of the bones of the night"

Those have always been some of my favorite Simon lyrics (right up there with "miracle and wonder" or "lasers in the jungle") because it fits such a slew of complicated emotions into such a simple and elegant set of lyrics. For me, the lines conveyed resignation, closure, understanding, sorrow, and peace.

The bottles could be from alcohol, making them a powerful symbol. The bones symbolize death, decay, or some kind of finality. The 'dream' is something the singer had about 'us' or himself and someone else. A woman, a city, a planet. . . Anything can be personified. He had a dream, and it came from those bottles and bones of the night. He understands now, what's happened, and maybe even what will happen next. It's powerful stuff.

Of course, that's merely my personal interpretation! The point is, there are a lot of great lyrics in these songs, and I liked them as they were. That's how I fell in love with them. Lucky for me, I guess, they haven't gone anywhere--I just don't know if I will fall in love with these new versions. . .

    Time will tell.

    G.... S....

Yeah. I miss the old lyrics, not I love the new ones too! It's just two different songs for me.

  46. T.... E....

Our dads celebrated being baptized with this music. Then they converted to other ideologies and started drinking lots of wine and smoking lots of hashish.

  47. H.... v....

One the best song of the maestro,

  48. S.... W....

Caught this live in Manchester , Amazing!

  49. F.... L....

    Superbe !

  50. B.... ....

    This is absolutely great.

  51. S.... ....

WHAT HAVE you Done Again... oh Luv

  52. S.... S....

NOTHING like a Paul Simon tune.

  53. E.... K....

Brilliant new arrangement. Bravo as always!

  54. V.... P....

    Great!!!

  55. F.... F....

This is magnificent. It's exciting to hear him doing such fine work still.

  56. s.... ....

In the blue light, lucierfians project blue beam kill, haha pieces of trash, n I used to think he was groovy, stupid, chemytails, pain , frequencies, oh my gosh, get a life, God has good memory

  57. C.... E....

I'm waiting for Bridge Over Troubled Water and Rene and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After The War.

    C.... E....

The live version of RAGMWTDATW was absolutely breathtaking, can't wait either!

    C.... E....

    @Jan Strojil 😂😂What a horrible nickname😂😂

    C.... E....

It is. But not as horrible as I am lazy. :)

    C.... E....

@CJ Ever And speaking of RAGMWTDATW, it's the next single out and it's absolutely gorgeous. :)

  58. a.... l....

Wow. I actually like this better than the original. The arrangement sounds very cutting edge to me.

    a.... l....

    cutting edge chamber music

    a.... l....

The song was written for this style it seems like.

  59. R.... M....

    Sembra sting

    R.... M....

    Sting is a poor copy.

  60. G.... S....

I don't much care for the echo on the vocals, and to be honest, I think I prefer the original to this iteration. All the same, it is interesting, and any work being done by Simon is good. I'm very much looking forward to any potential dedicated album projects he might be considering.

    G.... S....

Then again. . . this is a first listen, and I reckon this iteration of the classic song will grow on me as time passes. Though hearing these new versions of his music is odd--they are distinctly Simon. I have faith that all the songs on this upcoming album will be justified, offering something new and fresh from the older material. Looking forward to it!

    G.... S....

Did you listen to his last album Stranger to Stranger?

    G.... S....

Oh yeah, absolutely. I think it may have been his best work since Rhythm of the Saints, though I also quite enjoyed So Beautiful or So What. Both StS and SBoSW are very good works that I enjoyed thoroughly, which is why I look forward to this project (and the next) with such zeal.

  61. B.... P....

    Awesome !

  62. I.... T....

As a man who was born and lives not far from Chernobyl, I've always felt a certain connection with this song. Still I don't know why Paul decided to change one of his best lyrics "Down by the riverbank the blues band arrives - the music suffers baby, the music business thrives". Anyway it's a great rendition of one of his most beautiful songs. Can't wait to hear Darling Lorraine, which I think is absolutely among his best! So funny. So gentle. So true.

    I.... T....

+ mr taylorh - oh "blue" is rising again, slowly but steadily, believe me... :-) and i love this "modern" version very much, one of my faves at the moment...

    I.... T....

That's weird, that changed lyric. Sounds a bit like self-censorship. Blues may be in or out (always in if you ask me), but the criticism of the music business was clearly more apt (relative to the title of the song an'all) than this rhythmless jumble of words about live equalization. :)

    I.... T....

Ivan Tereshko, god, it must suck to live in Ukraine right now

    I.... T....

Did you know there is an alternate version, specifically the lyrics to , AT THE ZOO

    I.... T....

An alternate lyric can be useful. I prefer the blues band, but the DJ is okay. 'Can't Run But' is the only song in this set that I know already. The different instrumentation can create a nice effect if you play both tracks back to back.…

  63. Y.... S....

    Fanastic!

  64. E.... J....

Just as amazing as they were in concert! What a treat to see this live at the Hollywood Bowl!

  65. S.... O....

Wow what a rendition of a classic song. Wonderful
