Simon & Garfunkel - Why Don't You Write Me Lyrics

Why don't you write me,
I'm out in the jungle,
I'm hungry to hear you.
Send me a card,
I am waiting so hard
To be near you.
(La, la, la)
Why don't you write?
Something is wrong
And I know I got to be there.
Maybe I'm lost,
But I can't make the cost
Of the airfare.
Tell me why
Why
Why
Tell me why
Why
Why
Why don't you write me,
A letter would brighten
My loneliest evening.
Mail it today
If it's only to say
That you're leaving me.
(La, la, la)
Monday morning, sitting in the sun
Hoping and wishing for the mail to come.
Tuesday, never got a word,
Wednesday, Thursday, ain't no sign,
Drank a half a bottle of iodine.
Friday, woe is me
Gonna hang my body from the highest
tree.
Why don't you write me?

I was a high school teenager living on a military base in Japan when I heard this song. While over there, I fell deeply in love with a beautiful boy. We danced to this song. His family shipped back to the U.S. and I was inconsolable. I wrote every single day and he wrote back....until he stopped writing back. My mother said, "He's found a new girlfriend" and I freaked out. Turns out she was right. I never really recovered completely. *_He was my first love._ * You know how that always goes. Decades later I still think about him and still love him.

Flash to years and years later after a Chofu High School, Japan alumni reunion meeting person gave me his phone number. Well, several Chofu alumni met up in Las Vegas. One of their wives called and had a hissy fit when I picked up the phone (it was right next to me in the hotel's living room where I was sleeping on the couch by myself, not in the boys' room where they were asleep, but she screeched at me and got jealous and it was awful because nothing happened between he and I) and so I left. The next night we danced for a few songs at the casino because we were the best dancers (think Dirty Dancing movie, seriously) in the high school dances in Japan. We really were. People cleared a way for us and then stood and clapped while he whipped me around and we really had it going on. We had three years together and then his family moved back to the USA, so we had lost contact. I'm still sad about that and this song always makes me think of him.

Ray, if you're reading this, Terri Rix would like to hear from you!

One good thing about the Japan tour was I went to high school, (Chofu High School in Kanto Mura Air Base in Tokyo Japan. (Were you there in 1963 to 1966? Drop me a comment here!) I met a nice guy named Eddie Brown. It turned out that he was singer Jackson Brown's younger brother. Nice guy.

Paul Simon And Art Garfunkel You Both Are Best Together Than As Solo Song Creators Why Don't You Both Work Together On Some Cinematic Theme Or Tracks Meant To Be Used For Television Shows? That Is, If You Both Are Still Breathing, Hearts Beating Nicely, Get A Studio And Record Please? It has been far too long since you recorded together?

  10. G.... ....

    That's a dirty sax...

  11. S.... T....

I don't want to be creepy to Paul Simon but I would love the opportunity to tell him how much I LOVE his music!!!

  12. c.... t....

I love these songs but why are they repeated?

  13. G.... S....

Try "Why Don't You Write Me" by the Jacks (Doo Wop).

  14. D.... R....

Love that bari sax solo in the middle. Shows how beautifully retro these guys were back then. Fact is that they were heavily influenced by the Everly Bros and all the great music that came before them. They paid homage to it. And now they're the music of our memories. Bless Simon and Garfunkel!

  15. b.... r....

For all the guys to whom served in the Vietnam War...a time before the cell phone, Texting, when Mail call was everything...And wondering what your gal is up to...and what the fuck is Jodie up to....

So does anyone else think that this sounds like a darker version of Please Mister Postman? I mean, there is that threat of suicide near the end...

  20. A.... B....

  23. N.... H....

I GOT TICKETS TO PAUL SIMONS LAST TOUR FUCK YEAAAAAAHHH

  24. A.... A....

someone please make funny animals video for this. Serious.

  25. S.... ....

The high-pitched female backing vocals going "la, la, la" before the 2nd and last verse and the black deep soulful vocal saying "why don't you write" in the 2nd verse is both hilarious and kind-of-odd,.

  26. L.... I....

I doubt that this was written with Artie in mind. Paul got inspired by Jimmy Cliff’s song “Vietnam” and wanted to write a song with that in mind. He said himself that it’s about Vietnam. I see this as him imagining he’s in the depths of Vietnam, perhaps partly even in war situation, yearning for his woman who’s at home.

  28. B.... B....

My Dad turned me on to this album as a kid. We listened to it in the car on road trips. Dad blasted it through the house. I'm sure the neighbors loved it too!!!

  29. R.... ....

All the mofos thinking the postal service is dead! Write a motha' effing letter

  30. B.... R....

Yo dawg I heard you like baritone sax overdubs

  31. L.... B....

I first heard that song on Kidsongs!

  32. J.... P....

Paul McCartneyesque and Brian Wilsonesque! Great song. Coulda been an "A" side!

  33. C.... R....

It's obviously about a young man in Vietnam experiencing relationship troubles and feeling trapped.

  34. a.... ....

That little guitar line in the beginning sounds strangely similar to the intro of Third Eye Blind's "Never Let You Go". I wonder if they are S&G fans.

  35. S.... ....

Maybe they wouldn't have split if 1969 had been like 2017. Then Art could have tweeted, Instagrammed, Fb'd, Skyped, Snapchatted, Tumblr'd, Periscoped or texted instead of bothering w pen and paper. Then again we wouldn't have songs like this one or 'So Long FLW' or 'Only Living Boy in NY' :D

  36. W.... W....

In retrospect, I feel we all knew that was coming. At least the boys got to issue this masterwork to counter "Sgt. Pepper". And of course in Columbia studios, they had better tech than was available in UK at the time so the album is sonically overwhelming. STILL wonder about the placement of "Frank Lloyd Wright" on an inner band. At least digitally we don't have to deal with rpm speed anymore.

  37. G.... S....

Why don't you write me, Somebody loan me a dime; no matter how old the communication technology, these songs are timeless.

  38. B.... ....

Somehow this sounds a lot like a Wings era McCa song... before the band even formed. If anybody hears/makes any kind of sense out of that please tell me.

    B.... ....

I hear it too! Especially Band On the Run era!

    B.... ....

@Zeke 6781Wings really began in 1972. Band On The Run was released December 1973. This S&G album was released January 1970.

    B.... ....

@Daniel Golus I realize that, thank you. I'm saying this song sounds similar to Wings songs, especially from the Band On The Run album. Possibly influenced Paulie but maybe not. I never said The Wings song influenced the S&G song. I'm well aware of the history of both groups, I can assure you. I grew up listening to both. ;-)

    B.... ....

Pet Sounds -- what a memory! Is the big guy singer/composer still alive?

    B.... ....

    I hear Brian Wilson too.

  39. F.... L....

When your girlfriend stops texting you all the sudden.

  40. A.... w....

Paul Simon has performed a brand new song called "Wristband" live! The song itself is unreleased but the live-version is great fun. I recommend searching it up!

  41. S.... L....

Always thought of these lyrics as being from a soldier in Vietnam to his loved one at home...

    S.... L....

    Me too!

    S.... L....

That's the overt context, but as so often with Pauls songs, there can easily be another, deeper meaning.

  42. R.... V....

Why don't you text me? 2016

    R.... V....

I've got big fingers and, actually a text mostly says nothing.  A letter, though, that is something that history may be able to record (for your grand-children, possibly).

    R.... V....

Why don't you shove it? texting.

    R.... V....

    LMAOOO TRUEEEEEE

  43. b.... ....

    Those horns!!!!

  44. M.... C....

Text me, at least. Tweet? Instagramm your food, perhaps xD

    M.... C....

    Ok, will do!

    M.... C....

Mallika Chauhan instagram your food lol

    M.... C....

    Hahahaha, need your email Simon!

    M.... C....

  45. A.... P....

It's weird that this song was buried on the second side of the record.  It's a great track that was years and years ahead of its time.

  46. L.... C....

    Asome song

  47. D.... D....

Longing for those days in the past when a hand written letter meant something.

    D.... D....

    Yes! I cherish my letters.

    D.... D....

I have a new friend living 2 hrs away and after mtg 1st time i received a handwritten letter. We are now corresponding regularly and so exciting to check my mailbox again. It's not only bills and promotions waiting for me now but chatty letters and kind words. WonderFULL to have that return in my senior years.

    D.... D....

My parents confiscated most social media so that's how I talk with my friends now

    D.... D....

And so amazing to open the mailbox and see you've actually gotten a real letter to you sitting there!  I agree!

    D.... D....

I'd give anything to go back in time to 1965 and "Do It All Over Again"

  48. V.... ....

Have always hated Paul's face on this album cover

    V.... ....

+VirginSuicide77 yeah....this is NOT their best album cover.

    V.... ....

VirginSuicide77 I always thought Paul's hair looked like Art's mustache. Haha.

  49. J.... M....

    Music from a lost world...

  50. u.... m....

This is a great song but it is not now.  Now Paul could text, message, tweet, skype, facebook (and maybe do something I have yet to discover.)  When I first heard Paul and Artie I was a student and I communicated with my family via phone-boxes ie you had to say you would be there at a certain time and they had to commit to the same.  We sure as hell needed something to say to one another!  I guess letters had to do the same.  Now, what can I say?

    u.... m....

    @una mckillen
SIR!  i stand corrected and beg humble forgiveness.  please dont kill my puppy,,,,i love puppies.

    u.... m....

@mark park One, I am not a sir and 2 I quite like little dogs.  Funny how songs provoke such huge reactions.  I am not saying I understand your comment but peace and move on.

    u.... m....

+archstanton I was being sarcastic.  I can only categorise as it related to when it was written i.e. pre-e-mail, face-book, twitter, mobile phones, text, Instagram and other stuff that is sort of of the here and now but might not be tomorrow..Paul was missing Artie.  That is all I garnered from this song.  I was just saying now he could have found a multitude of ways of communicating and they may have sickened of one another long before "Bridge over Troubled Water" wrapped.  Back then, yes, they would have written a letter or sent a post-card or possibly communicated over a long-distance land-line.  Believe it or not, I miss those times.

    u.... m....

I think people were although we could fall out spectacularly too  -  no "un-friending" or sending someone a text to say bye after 5 years but sometimes massive painful emotion that had to be faced. However, when I was young you made connections face to face and you carried them on that way.  If you agreed to meet someone for a coffee, you met that person; a drink likewise.  In all my young friendships  -  college and post-college - I had to commit.  We met for coffee, lunch, tea, dinner and I was never let down and never once let down.  Now, forget it.  I have given up trying.  No-one (apart from me) uses a land-line and it is so easy to blow a person out with a text.  Face to face is practically impossible. We are all so busy admiring our own versions of our own lives on Face-book, Instagram, Snap-chat, Dog Breathe (did I make those last two up?) that we have forgotten that other people exist in their own right.

    u.... m....

Good comments, UNA, the change of communication since the 60s

  51. c.... ....

This sounds like a lot of the music Paul Simon went on to do in the 70's post-S&G

    c.... ....

Yes, it somehow reminds me of Was a Sunny Day very much

  52. .... ....

    I've never heard of this.

  53. M.... M....

The much unheralded song off that album. It is one of my favourites. Anyone know who the deep voice is near the beginning?

    M.... M....

    Maybe it's Art's secret deep side :D

  54. A.... M....

"...another expression of Pauls own hurt at Artie's long absence..."

Got any proof for that?  The tenor of the song--and what I know of the group--doesn't support that interpretation.  Wikipedia says that it "deals with separation from Simon's wife in a jungle", whatever that means, which seems much more likely.

    A.... M....

+Alan Mclemore It just shows what crap Wilkapedia is.  What has this song got to do with Paul Simon's wife or a jungle?  It is Paul missing Artie.  They were friends  -   serious long term friends.  That level of missing is allowed for caring friends.

  55. I.... R....

Oh please. Garfunkel did a duet with Simon about being on the outs with him? With romantic elements? Pretty sure they were never lovers. Like many of the songs on this album, it's about Simon's neurotic love life.

    I.... R....

I don't think Paul and Art were lovers  -  that is slightly ridiculous.  What I think they might have been for longer than both of them might have liked was friends  -  seriously, major, friends and then they weren't.  I still, romantically, think "why don't you write me?" was Paul missing Artie. Paul's neurotic love life?  I am not sure. I know Carrie  Fisher was one but all those girls in those anonymous places?   Paul admitted he was a total bastard where women were concerned   The rest is guesswork.

    I.... R....

They're not gay. They are both married.

    I.... R....

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... This is so off that I don't ever know where to start X'D

    I.... R....

    sometimes people over think......you think?

  56. M.... B....

Never heard this before - I like!

  57. G.... A....

I thought he was in love with Princes Laya ( Star Wars fame) I saw him on 60 minutes expressing his lost love seriously

  58. M.... ....

    Haven't we all been there?

  59. S.... ....

Stupid ass hipsters tend to overlook S&G because they sold millions of records. These poor geezers don't know what they're missing.

  60. u.... m....

I hesitate to reply. You are talking about writing. I guess Simon and Art wrote and replied to one another. Now we have the whole works - skype, twitter, face book. Means nothing to me.

  61. N.... B....

Mine too, mostly because I like the vocal work a lot.

  62. j.... ....

True, but more people should write.

  63. F.... ....

I love this song. So well written. But what song on the album isn't excellent, I ask you?

  64. F.... M....

it has this country and reggae kind of vibe, and 60s pop, never heard those three being mixed together before sounds great non the less

  65. u.... m....

Because you can skype me, face-book me, tweet me, even phone me on a land line, God forbid. Then again you can write me properly on lovely note paper and put a first class stamp on it. The rarity value of that might make it matter.

  66. r.... ....

Hardly so. Why would Simon say" even if just to say you are leaving me" if the song was written with Peggy in mind? They were newly wed or were about to get married if we assume this song was written for BOTW album.

Kathy might be a more viable candidate, though by the time BOTW was coming out, Simon's romantic relationship with her was long over.

It is also curious that in " Harmony game", this song was not mentioned at all.

  67. r.... ....

This is about his wife (at the time) Peggy.

  68. M.... ....

Such an amazing album. Could be on top 10 albums all time easily!

  69. u.... m....

This is a great song. Whether it was his girlfriend or Art whose absence and inability to write that was upsetting him, it is still, in my mind, second only to Bridge over Troubled Water as my favourite of his songs. Its a great dance beat to me anyway. (He would have no problem now: he could tweet, text, skype, face-book. They would be sick of each other in no time!)

  70. o.... ....

Anyone else remember this song on Kidsongs? xD

  71. P.... H....

My first spanish love, in 1970.............

  72. A.... C....

    I don't want to wait anymore :).

  73. 2.... ....

at last well done poster a brilliant track. simply brillant

  74. G.... P....

I really love this album :D

  75. m.... ....

Late 60s, early 70s I was at Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI about 10 miles from Ann Arbor and the famous University of Michigan. I wish I could say of a certainty what year they were at UM; I just know that's where I saw these boys. OMG, what a fantastic sound they make, and their songs lift your spirit like wings lift a bird. Thank you so much for uploading this. Mary

  76. b.... ....

it's one of my favorite songs .tans a lot

  77. C.... ....

  78. D.... D....

Great track; one of my faves from this album.

  79. c.... ....

I SO forgot about this track... What an inventive recording. There is so much going on here. Easily my favorite on the album.

  80. N.... ....

    Giant Moostache!

  81. C.... K....

I bought this album in 1970 and every song is great........this one is wonderful too.

  82. c.... ....

    Such a great song

  83. H.... R....

This is probably my favorite track on the album.
