Simon & Garfunkel - The Boxer Lyrics

I am just a poor boy
Though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocketful of mumbles
Such are promises
All lies and jest
Still, a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest

When I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of a railway station
Running scared
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know

Lie-la-lie...

Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there

Lie-la-lie...

Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone
Going home
Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me
Leading me
Going home

In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down
OR cut him 'til he cried out
In his anger and his shame
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remains

Lie-la-lie...

Anyone know what the name of the instrument is that comes in around 35 seconds or so? And why it’s so perfect yet out of place at the same time.

I love this song. A bit of trauma left me with a streak of aggression I'll always have - and I quite like - and I channel it into sport which includes boxing.

This song reminds of very special
    moments of my life .
That was perhaps the best concert I’ve ever seen in my whole life . Both of them playing that and many other of their best songs in Central Park, NYC , 1981

Back in the 90s, I once spent an entire day listening to the oldies radio stations, trying to find this song I had only heard once. All I remembered was the chorus “lie lie lie...” Back before YouTube, I had only a blank cassette tape to record this from, and right before I climbed in bed it finally popped on the radio and I captured it. Listened to it all night. This song is pure magic.

Stupid "talkie" songs started coming out shortly after this time, and I remember as a kid, my aunt made a joke while we were in the car listening to the radio, and did the Telly Savalas or William Shatner or Leonard Nimoy version (they all were among those non-singers who did "talkies"). It turned into a constant, amusing, sweet, annoyance. Lie-la-lie, lie-la-lie.... RIP Aunt Penny.

I remember hearing this when it first came out in 1960 something. I am 68 years old now and it takes me back to when life pretty much sucked. It gave me inspiration to carry on in life and reminds me of how my life was and how good it is now. You might say it re centers me.

I know exactly what you mean. Everytime something bad happens to me, I listen to this song and everything feels at least somewhat better. Like the song reaches to you and says "Hey, don't be sad, the whole world is a lie anyways. Just listen to my lyrics and feel connected. Everything is going to be just fine."

Beautiful, reminds me of my childhood on the farm i've lived, how the air was different, everything smelled different...magic even. The trips we used to make to the town, playing with the other kids...a different time really, and im not even old at just 22... but life certainly was different back then, and this song kinda captures the feeling, especially when the strings come in at the climax

Dedicated to all who face challenges struggles or fights in life on a regular basis such as living with disabilities like bipolar disorder. I frequently feel that I want to just 'leave' or quit but the fighter in me will never go down quietly and I am happy to say is quite often still there after each and every bipolar relapse. Don't forget life is for learning not for losing: If you feel you are 'losing' learn from whatever has made you feel that way and better yourself. That way today's 'loser' becomes tomorrow's Winner. Adapt ... Improvise ... OVERCOME :o)

I swear I will make a movie on these legends. I'm not a huge fan and I haven't heard many of there songs, but I love every millisecond of this song.

I always wanted to know how the dude got the job playing the shotgun in this song.

  62. b.... p....

Dylan, for some unknown reason, did this on Self Portrait. it is.........extremely weird. The only time (fortunately it would seem) that he overdubbed himself. Eh, it does have it's own odd charm to it. It's still weird.

I don't know why, but this song brings me many memories of my childhood and makes me cry ... cry for the beautiful and wonderful memories.

  67. A.... S....

This song its got so much tragedy in it that It makes me scream from the bottom of the my whole being. I was 19, it was spring, white blossom trees in my backyard! I had it loud and danced! I was in love with something I guess, it was myself I was in Love with. I love this song so so so much! It is the magic of your lives on this planet. We try to make something of ourselves, we sell ourselves short, we give ourselves away and we receive tear to spear. Oh I love this song so much! Play it for me in Heaven! I love it Lord. I love you Lord! Poor will reach Heaven cause they are PURE!

Now the years are rolling by me
    They are rockin' evenly
I am older than I once was
And younger than I'll be; that's not unusual
    Nor is it strange
    After changes upon changes
We are more or less the same
After changes we are more or less the same

    [Hook]
Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie
Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie, la la lie la lie

I was just recalling how when I was little, maybe 6 or 7, tears would sometimes come to my eyes at the line “I am leaving, I am leaving...” The music and lyrics were so moving even back then, before I could really comprehend them.
