Simon & Garfunkel - Sparrow Lyrics

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's traveled far and cries for rest?
“Not I,” said the Oak Tree
“I won't share my branches with no sparrow's nest
And my blanket of leaves won't warm her cold breast”

Who will love a little Sparrow
And who will speak a kindly word?
“Not I,” said the Swan
“The entire idea is utterly absurd
I'd be laughed at and scorned if the other Swans heard”

And who will take pity in his heart
And who will feed a starving Sparrow?
“Not I,” said the Golden Wheat
“I would if I could, but I cannot, I know
I need all my grain to prosper and grow”

Who will love a little Sparrow?
Will no one write her eulogy?
“I will,” said the Earth
“For all I've created returns unto me
From dust were ye made and dust ye shall be”

    Consider the Sparrow
    by Aaron Peterson

if you consider the fragile beauty of one single sparrow, then you must consider
the rest of and the whole family and flock of the sparrow bird animal

and how beautiful and how much value the sparrow bird and the sparrow flock
gives to our human and earth lives

for in our daily lives, if we woke up every day and there where no sparrows perching and singing in our trees
or sparrow flocks flying in our skies or nesting in the barns of our country farms,

... then what value and worth would our human lives then be?

and if we consider the numbers of people of the human family and human flock
who say that they care but they really do not care (or not enough) the value and the worth of the one sacred sparrow
and the sparrow flock that the one sparrow flies in with its friends and lovers
and the sparrow family that the one sparrow lives with along with its lover
and then they raise together the sparrow family of sparrow baby chiks,
so that they as sparrow birds might have a chance to grow up and do what the one sparrow
was and is able to do as a tiny sparrow with the grace of nature and life
so that it and they as sparrows should all get to live on planet earth
equally the same as the human flock and human family and the one individual human being,

... the lack of consideration toward the life of the sparrow,
then that would be one reason for people who do care and who consider the lives of tiny creatures and tiny birds
to understand why our planet earth, is being destroyed,

... by the human flock and the human family

and its the people of the human flock, who do not love any longer the sparrow or the sparrow flock
that fly in our earth skies and sing in our earth trees and who make sparrow nests in the barns of our country farms
and who as un-considerate BASTARDS and lost souls,
are destroying the earth and who the bible say they will enerit not the earth or money in the end,
but only the wind because of their love and greed for money
and their lack of love and ignorance towards nature

... and when the earths swift winds blow across and on a dusty desert landscape,
that once was the lush green and blue planet earth, the people who enherted the earth as a desert and not a garden
they will probably have wished that it was more of nature and the life of a sparrow and its family,
that they should have chosen to love and cherish more,
instead of their love and their greed more for and only for MONEY

  5. S.... ....

    Wonderful song

  6. G.... H....

Played this at my Dad's memorial, his favorite song from them.

  7. B.... c....

    From ashes to ashes

  8. R.... N....

I love Paul Simon and I love some ‘60s singer/songwriter music but this is a little saccharine even for the time 😆 C’mon now lol

  9. K.... O....

My interpretation on this song is that nature is acting like humans here, as nature would never say "you can't share". Therefore I think this song is a pun on 'human nature'

  10. t.... y....

Sizi dinleyince aklıma şair İsmet Özel'in 'Kuşun Ölümü' şiiri gelir. 'Kuşun Ölümü' şiirini okuyunca da aklıma direkt sizin şarkınız düşer. Ve kendimi burda bulurum.

  11. R.... B....

man you know I just want to just even say one thing to him not that I'm going to say anything different than everybody before me but what a big responsibility to be the people who literally before they were around there was no bridge over troubled water in the silence was soundless and who cares if silver girls heroin or the Illuminati they're just human they're more human and they paid more attention to their pain and their love so that they can keep us reminding us that it is not all about money

  12. R.... B....

I know that I feel more human and life is given value when it's taken to the real despair of the tale. Kind of like Oscar wildes parrow who gave his song and his heart blood all for the sake of this man who loves his woman and it turns out they're fickle and fleeting and they didn't even care I think that's probably where Paul Simon got this song from but he did it exactly right

  13. M.... F....

    Their music is so hypnotic!

  14. C.... P....

No one can write songs like Paul.

  15. S.... L....

I'm the sparrow, somewhere they can't find me, three am wendsday morning

    S.... L....

Oh my life seems unreal, my crime an illusion,
A scene badly written in which I must play!

  16. m.... ....

    Paul Simon

    What a song! Those lyrics...

  18. R.... L....

    Important.

  19. y.... b....

the first time i heard this i was 8 years old and i sobbed for like an hour. it’s been almost 20 years since and i still cry like a baby when i hear it

  21. d.... u....

when I was 9 years old I loved this song, now 50 years on iam that sparrow

  22. m.... ....

I was named after this song ^-^

    m.... ....

    Sparrow?

  23. C.... C....

    For the refugees !

    C.... C....

The refugees are more like vultures than sparrows.

  24. P.... K....

I heard this song when I was about 7 years old. Mum played S&G along with The Animals and Beach boys. I felt so sorry for the sparrow back then. I didn't know back then that the sparrow symbolically represents most living creatures including humans.

  25. S.... R....

The real trick lies in accepting that the sparrow deserved to die.

    S.... R....

    Sol Oscuro don't you too.

    S.... R....

We all have sinned against our maker, provider, sustainer and those who say others deserve a place not of life isn't worth my time here.

    S.... R....

    time will tell

    S.... R....

and the concept of sin is for pussies. the whole point of the song is that nature has its own way of doing things, far superior to our stupid human sentimentalities

    S.... R....

docholiday Wood Not me. I never took a bite out of any forbidden fruit, and I don't accept the idea that I can be held accountable to the debts or transgressions of my ancestors, or anyone other than myself. Original Sin is the most ridiculous half-assed attempt at guilt tripping I've ever heard of.

  26. P.... P....

This song makes me sob everytime I hear it.

  27. J.... S....

Such a simple song. Such a poignant statement about human nature. Beautiful!

  28. M.... ....

This is one of the dumbest and most cheezy songs they have ever done.
None of those things would turn down a sparrow.
Doesn't make any sense at all.

    M.... ....

Madness on Man? How can madness be on something. That is cheesy. Plus does that mean that women don't have madness on them?

    M.... ....

Kirby Weller the entire song is a series of metaphors

    M.... ....

Wow. I would hate to hear your playlist.

    M.... ....

Mate, just shut up if your going to come out with nonsense

    M.... ....

According to something I read on the back of the album, the oak tree symbolized selfishness or something, the swan, vanity, and the golden wheat, hypocrisy.

  29. T.... ....

If you die in space you wont return to earth although it created you.

    T.... ....

...I'm going to have to think about that for a while.

    T.... ....

It is the cosmos as a whole that created you, not the Earth itself.

  30. C.... E....

    Underrated song tbh....

  31. A.... O....

This song makes me content with death

    A.... O....

Makes it seem like something to look forward to eagerly.

    A.... O....

It does the same for me.

    A.... O....

    I'm ready

  32. j.... ....

Sweet song. This is an original correct?

    j.... ....

Yup. Paul Simon is a genius.

  33. M.... P....

This is a perfect song perfectly executed.

    M.... P....

My Puritanical Opinion I thought you said It was a perfect song for a execution

    M.... P....

Yeah, but now you are relieved at my cautious use of grammar.

    M.... P....

My my, what a mundane wit. Yaaaaawn.

  34. c.... k....

i really like the additional guitar playing in this version. the version i have on cd is a live version without the extra picking.

    c.... k....

    +cammie k. sandi Sweet Cammie K.

    c.... k....

You idiot, what you hear, and do not see, is the merest supposition. Duh.

    c.... k....

    are you alright marv lad?

  35. c.... k....

Great song. All great music evokes some emotion.

  37. K.... B....

Has Paul Simon written a more magical song than this throughout his career?

    K.... B....

dangling conversation, but this is close

    K.... B....

    Bleecker's Street, I say.

    K.... B....

    Depends on the perspective.
For some, it might be 'A Church is Burning'. For many it might be 'Sound of Silence', even it it brings out the best in them.

    K.... B....

    he didn't write this though...

    K.... B....

Perhaps. Theres "The Dangling Conversation", "A Poem on the Underground Wall" & "American Tune" . To each their own.

  38. E.... G....

I'm almost certain this song is what inspired the Lemmiwinks episode/song in South Park.
