Simon & Garfunkel - Old Friends Lyrics
Old friends
Old friends
Sat on their park bench
Like bookends
A newspaper blown through the grass
On the high shoes
Of the old friends
Old friends
Winter companions
The old men
Lost in their overcoats
Waiting for the sunset
The sounds of the city
Sifting through trees
On the shoulders
Of the old friends
Can you imagine us
Years from today
Sharing a park bench quietly?
How terribly strange
To be seventy
Old friends
Memory brushes the same years
Silently sharing the same fear
Time it was
And what a time it was
It was . . .
A time of innocence
A time of confidences
Long ago . . . it must be . . .
I have a photograph
Preserve your memories
They're all that's left you

Simon & Garfunkel Old Friends Comments
What is remarkable about this song is that Paul Simon wrote it when he was a young man. His imagination and accuracy and sensitivity to what it feels like to be at the fag end of life is truly creative and beautiful. A classic song that has stood the test of time and will continue to do so. I am now one of those old men sitting on the park bench but I can testify that there is nothing to be afraid of....only loneliness in one's final years.
Brilliant.
I like the song, listening to it since 80's, but love it more since the year 2000 up to now. I don't know .... Just listen to it in the midnight when you're alone... feel the sensation
What a song ! Wonderful lyrics. No easy rhyming here. Superbly written flowing effortlessly. The classical score is astonishing ! Describing the tumultuous life that then leads into the quiet calmness of old age. Topped off by Garfunkel's heavenly voice searing into the song. Nothing better in popular music.
love this song
I wonder if those two ever sat together on a park bench while in their 70's... Just trying to image that....
Yes, I see it now...
Just a wonderfully written and poignant song...speaking so much truth in how aging affects all of us.
KUDOS to Simon and Garfunkek for this beautiful song

Couple of old guys on a windy Fall day in a park.....pondering, reflecting. Even this was long ago.
My grandpa started singing this song... let me just tell you I was in tears 😭
Sending love Ava...I'm sorry you're crying.
My Mom loved this song.
RIP old friends

Understated but brilliant song.
I was in my early 20s when this came out and I felt then that 70 was so damn far off, couldn't even really see it. Now I'm a mere 5 years away from turning 70 and I panic thinking how much time has gone by and I haven't really realized it. Yet this song holds up after all these years, just holds more significance now.
This made me cry...old friends...wish I could hug you! I too am right there teetering on the edge of 65. Take care, smile and remember, we lived in the best of times!!!
I heard this song when I was in my early 20s. I knew my 70s were in the future. I just never realized they would get here so damn fast. My!

@becky brandon You are loved,
Whatever happened to the depth and breadth, the observations of the great meaning of life? Where have a the great songwriters gone? Elton John, Lennon and McCartney, Floyd, Stones, Who, Stevie Wonder .....

I think they still exist, but to to the wealth as we know it.

Plenty of great 20th century classical: Ives, Gershwin, Shostakovich, Bartok, Stravinsky, Copland, Boulez, Varese...to name a few.
With that said, from the later 20th to the present has been pretty faceless, without a composer with a "house-hold" name.
One day you to will be "those old people" and it comes sooner than you think.
dudeer mananer yep
Classic song writing!.
They both turned 70 in 2011.
See my Old Friends Super 8 film video on my youtube channel!
I did it about 1976.
I wonder if they'll get together and sing this one next year when they both turn 70.
