Simon & Garfunkel - A Most Peculiar Man Lyrics
He was a most peculiar man.
That's what Mrs. Riordan said and she should know;
She lived upstairs from him
She said he was a most peculiar man.
He lived all alone within a house,
Within a room, within himself,
A most peculiar man.
He had no friends, he seldom spoke
And no one in turn ever spoke to him,
'Cause he wasn't friendly and he didn't care
And he wasn't like them.
Oh, no! he was a most peculiar man.
He turned on the gas and he went to sleep
With the windows closed so he'd never wake up
To his silent world and his tiny room;
And Mrs. Riordan says he has a brother somewhere
Who should be notified soon.
And all the people said, "What a shame that he's dead,
But wasn't he a most peculiar man?"

My mom played this song to me a few years ago saying it reminded her of me. Back then it made me wonder why she did that. Nowadays this song makes me break into tears and I think I know why she played the song to me. Life is hard, life is sometimes painful but I'm still here.
P.S I was slightly drunk writing this, just wanted to get something off my chest.

My mom recommend this :) I'm glad but this is such a depressing song :/
miss you. dice
Dear God what a talent!!!
This song describes me precisely.
I hate that this song doesn't get as much love as it should. Its been so long since someone's posted a comment...
This song makes me cry everytime. It reminds me of my brother. He took his life..hecwas only 18. He was abused and bullied. He was socially awkward..and he hated people cuz they hurt him. I loved him though. And knew his true heart. Kindness..love..acceptance..beauty. He was truly a gem and he should not have died so young.
I literally found this in Phanfiction, this fits the story so damn well, wtf
Oh !!! Just realized that the most peculiar man..was about suicide, missed that part , brain freeze , thought the loner died of natural causes.
https://youtu.be/h8YXmc8ybbA
this song reminds me of a charles bukowski poem
"Isn't he a bit like you and me?"
This makes me think that my peculiar life still has a reason to live
The one upstaii
The one upstaires is your broyher ot sister in Christ.
Be tollerant, be patient, be loving to him or her

john cooper : I know what you mean.
Sad song. But what a beautiful song
crying over this song
Favorite song
i think the most peculiar man that theyre talking about was a 'targeted individual.' i am too :(
Mrs Reardon should know, she lived upstairs from him. Nice sarcasm there
He wasn't friendly and he didn't care, sounds like the 50% of the human population.
Hahah more.
The irony being they’re not friendly and didn’t care about him.
I think it's pretty bad that I relate to this song.
I am so glad I found this song today. Cathartic.
I've been there. Depression sucks.
This song, which I first heard on a foreign Internet radio station broke through the hard exterior I try to present to the outside world, caused my eyes to well up and the tears to flow. What a poignant song in terms of the society which we have managed to create by alienating so many people. According to the Samaritans in 2018, 84 men a week comit suicide in the UK in addition to 20+ women. What an utter disgrace. It's funny that the BBC and the Office for National Statistics released a news Item to coincide with the Samaritans report saying that the suicide rate in the UK in 2018 is the lowest since 2011. Mmmmm.... I wonder who is right!
Heartbreaking stuff which I can readily reate to. .
"and all the people said its a shame that he's dead but wasn't he a most peculiar man" typical
people don't really care about anyone but themselves.......its really a sad and depressing song, but somehow I love it!
I often think about this song. Its sang in a happy tune but its really sad! I could cry. I'm remembering back to the 70s when I was young. The words are so powerful but simple
This song is the story of an autistic person. Didn't anyone catch this?
another thought provoking song by simon and garfunkel.
There was no Clarence there to stop his suicide. But then again, he was no George Bailey. There was no spouse, dream house fixer-upper, no children, friends, or family... Only a brother somewhere, that should be notified soon, doesn't sound too peculiar, just adrift.
He doesn’t sound all that perculiar to me.
lol well shoot
Who are the soulless pricks you disliked this
He died last Saturday.....
Finally a song that's relatable! - A song about a man who hasn't experienced anything!
"He seldom spoke" Yes, you can say that again! (but I won't cause I seldomly speak)
How the fuck would Mrs Riordan know, i bet the sick old fuck was into some really creepy shit. And the 'most peculiar man' was vilified for not wanting to be a part of it. Mrs Riordan really was a weird old cunt.
Rename the tune to 'mrs riordan was a weird old judgemental shit' then we can talk
Cowsills made a cool and beautiful version.
Many of the songs on this album deal with depression . Many years before we ever understood the problem.
What I'm thinking when I listen to this song: "He just died and that's all they can say?"
THAT is music... not the shit nowadays
meravigliosa
Fun Fact for those who don't know: Paul Simon wrote this while he lived in England. After reading a short 4-line long obituary of a man who killed themselves in the morning paper.
April Come She Will is a metaphor for the arrival and departure of the European Cuckoo👍🏻
How cannot like such beauty ?
He was a most peculiar man.
That's what Mrs. Riordan said and she should know;
She lived upstairs from him
She said he was a most peculiar man.
He was a most peculiar man.
He lived all alone within a house,
Within a room, within himself,
A most peculiar man.
He had no friends, he seldom spoke
And no one in turn ever spoke to him,
'Cause he wasn't friendly and he didn't care
And he wasn't like them.
Oh, no! he was a most peculiar man.
He died last Saturday.
He turned on the gas and he went to sleep
With the windows closed so he'd never wake up
To his silent world and his tiny room;
And Mrs. Riordan says he has a brother somewhere
Who should be notified soon.
And all the people said, "What a shame that he's dead,
But wasn't he a most peculiar man?"
He was a most peculiar man
That's what Mrs. Reardon says
And she should know
She lived upstairs from him

He was a most peculiar man
He lived all alone within a house
Within a room, within himself
A most peculiar man
He had no friends, he seldom spoke
And no one in turn ever spoke to him
'Cause he wasn't friendly and he didn't
Care
And he wasn't like them
O, no-o-o!
He was a most peculiar man
He died last Sat-you're-day...
He turned on the gas! and he went to sleep!
With the windows closed!
So he'd never wake up!
To his silent world!
And his tiny room!
And Mrs Reardon says he has a brother somewhere!
Who should be notified so-oo-oon...
And all the people said,
What a shame that he's dead,
But wasn't he a most peculiar man?
--Paul Simon
I found this album I think two times. It was in both divorced parents album collections... it was even more peculiar.. because no one ever talked about it.
Overlooked gem
Wonderful...speechless i am
Introverts are not peculiar we are just different to extroverts. Extroverts may think introverts are peculiar but introverts think extroverts are peculiar.
I think this song is about someone much more peculiar than just an ordinary introvert.
It saddens me that so many of the comments relates to this song. I, personally, became obsessed with this song (and its concept/theme) when I was about 12 (so...about 12 years ago?). I didn't end up like the Peculiar Man in the end. I got lucky and I became my own company and somehow managed to pull through. That being said...
I know a lot these comments are well over a year old, but if anyone ever reads this, at any point in time, you can reach out to me. Even if it's been 5 years since I posted this, you will have a support system through me.
None of us have to be alone. We all deserve the opportunity to live and thrive and be happy. I don't know you...but I love you. You will be ok.
That is such a beautiful comment
Thank you.
He was a rock.
Very poignant and so sad that he dies
The most peculiar man wasn't exactly a barrel of laughs, was he?
Written when we were still using coal gas instead of natural gas.
sorry for the mistakes in tiping

I was in a good mood until I listened to this song. Now I'm very sad. I think I'll eat something.
I cry so bad everytime I listen. This music is so amazing 😢
I know what was wrong with him; he had Asperger's syndrome and/or he was autistic. I really love the song and I can relate to some of the lyrics; I can relate to "he lived all alone, within a house within a room within himself
"He lived all alone within a house within a room, within himself"
This is music to cut your wrists to.
Mrs reordien,, top girl
I am peculiar, one day I will die, they were spot on these people exist, genius and insanity!!! fine line.

@contrafax I figure I can choose my path but I can't hide from all of it so it is what it is
To quote another fave kid Rock " you couldn't change it couldn't rearrange it, so there it was"

Deen Mia well, It's not like I'm expecting to get better but it's always good to know I'm not the only one
This is me!
I always loved songs of Simon & Garfunkel because it brings back my childhood memories where I used to listen to these songs with my dad. But this song in particular is special to me. I think of my ex when I hear this song and it makes me cry. And also my dad is a peculiar man too. Its just really sad. I hope they are okay.
My Dad and my uncle too. I love this song but is so sad
When this song is your jam
;_;
This song always makes me cry.
I know...
Simple upbeat tune coupled with the deepest of lyrics. Keep an eye on this Paul Simon dude, he's going places.
Has anyone notified his brother yet?
Maybe his brother comitted suicide too...
No. Nobody knows where he is. He's just 'somewhere'.
Yea his brother said who's payin for the funeral **🤣**
What album was this on?
_Sounds of Silence_. The one that's pictured in the video.
the Best!!!
sad song none the less.......are we not all peculiar?
Yes. Thankfully.
At the age of thirteen, I understood this man. I felt the same pain as him. By the age of eighteen, I felt fortunate that I had barely missed sharing his fate. I always come back to this song.
I feel you. I also understood this man, and I feel I still do. Luckily I haven't shared the last verse either. Not yet, anyway.
fuck social anxiety, fuck it.
It is a wonderful thing that people without a clue can make one!
make what?
@Osama Gamal
Yes!
I get anxiety on everything
Osama Gamal "Sound of Silence", "I Am a Rock", and "A Most Peculiar Man". You can throw in "Song for the Asking" for good measure.

Patrick Mcnees See you, space cowboy
Just when you think you feel nothing, this makes me wanna break down and cry.
Well, at least you're not a ROCK--cause a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries.
he is still there ???
This brings tears to my eyes as well. Describes my son, and what I fear will happen to him when his father and I are no longer around to buffer him from the cruel world.
Nice theory. What if you're wrong?
Kathy Meyer the responsibility shouldn't be yours and your son alone to struggle with.
Although there needs to be more service, professionals can help, especially therapy.
1joentoni
I agree. I will not assume on the intricacies of your son's life ma'am, but for most people, they must find strength in themselves to stand up against whatever the world will throw at them. Sheltering your son will only work for so long. Tough love is needed so that he can take responsibility for his own life.
However, if your son is not like most people and has mental problems, I would recommend a therapist.
@Kathy Meyer
Me too, me too.
1joentoni, TOMO, and Aniarable Channel, you seem to have just jumped to conclusions about her comment though. We haven't been given all the information. I have a little brother with downs and so I can totally relate to Kathy Meyer when she expresses the need for someone to buffer her son from the cruel world. The world thinks of my little brother as a "peculiar person" and he would be destined to the fate of the suicidal man in the song without us. He's a mental illness and so do I and it's two completely different stories. I have learned to cope with depression without the buffering of my mother and father(they made it worse actually), but my brother needs us. Don't try to say what she's supposed to do or not do unless you know the full story.
Life is not a one size fits all situation
Its not the cruel world, its the people living on it
Shut up
very 60s sound -- I'm getting images of JFK, LBJ, older kids in college, short haircuts, people reading Kafka and Sartre ..
lbj listened to bridge over troubled water during the end of his life contemplating whether or not his presidency would have a positive impact on america in the long run
You say I'm peculiar. I say I'm unique. You say I'm stubborn. I say I'm steadfast........... and so it goes.
Most people are peculiar....once you get to know them.
+Frank Steinmetz true, true.
Frank Steinmetz that's not really the message of the song..
You are right Luke! I just happened to think that when I was listening to their song on this site. Love their music....been listening since high school....a long time ago!!! : )
I have no friends. Nobody likes me. I live alone. Sometimes I'm sad. And I'm a peculiar man. But I don't need others to validate my existence. I deserve to exist. On my own volition. I'll never kill myself. No matter what life throws at me. No matter what happens. I'll always hold onto "never". Because I all I need is my own approval to know I deserve to exist. And no person can stop me from doing so as long as I strive to enjoy this strange life on my own.
@Free Love and Food Stamps
... um since when do guys need to have kissed a woman or had a girlfriend to be ok. im gay and i seem to be doing just fine without being romantically involved with other gender people
I hope you're having fun living your way
Like me.
No man Is an island.
Maybe he was a nihilist, you know beacause "he didn't care". I might be wrong tho.
that section of the song was how people saw him, not who he actually was. he had social anxiety.
