Simon, Carly - Embrace Me, You Child Lyrics

At night I heard God whisper lullabyes
While Daddy next door whistled whisky tunes
And sometimes when I wanted, they would harmonize
There was nothing those two couldn't do

Embrace me you child, you're a child of mine
And I'm leaving everything I am to you
Go chase the wild and nightime streets sang Daddy
And God sang, Pray the devil doesn't get to you

I thought together they must sing the moon away
I thought that they must know each other well
For the magic that they made, when they played
Wasn't lost between their Heaven and their Hell

Then one night Daddy died and went to Heaven
And God came down to earth and slipped away
I pretended not to notice I'd been abandoned
But no-one sang the night into the day
And later night time songs came back again
But the singers don't compare with those I knew
And I never figured out where God and Daddy went
But there was nothing those two couldn't do

Simon, Carly Embrace Me, You Child Comments
  1. C.... M....

In the 1970s, Carly was the Mysterious Older Woman. She knew more than all of us younger dudes and she was before her time. Kudos, Sweet Lady.

Oh my God. I only just heard this song for the first time watching a Carly Simon documentary and it's absolutely amazing. Exactly as Nia says below her voice soars and it's beautiful. Can't find a backing track for it though sadly, so have to learn it on guitar (probably not a bad thing!)

  4. K.... D....

I honestly think is the equal of "you're so vain" if not better Embrace me has terrific key changes in it and why is it when they rightly so mention Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Judy Collins as great female singer/songwriters and yet the critics underestimate Carly they shouldn't she is equally great!!

  5. K.... D....

Beautiful song, beautiful album, beautiful woman recorded in London I think. Carly Simon is up there with the best singer/songwriters.

  6. R.... D....

I bought No Secrets back in the early 70's. Recently bought it again on cd for my car.... LOVE the video attached to this...well done to whomever did it. Wonderful to catch a fleeting glimpse of life as I knew it........

    R.... D....

Me too reminds me of early childhood and my darling Daddy

  7. K.... D....

The woman is hugely talented the No Secrets and Anticipation albums are up there with anything the great Joni Mitchell & Carole King recorded Carly Simon is a female music goddess.

  8. P.... O....

This album , No Secrets, was probably the Best album Carly ever did, and this
Particular song might have been the best...very powerful arrangement and vocals!

  13. T.... M....

Love it. Still have the album. Her songs always make me fee sad, a bit choked at the times passed. I specially like the old videos/photos and changing appropriately to the beat. Great stuff and thanks for sharing. (No copyright issues with this? How about if moneytising?)

    R.... B....

Me too exactly. Happy times in the 70s for me.

  16. P.... S....

My wife plays guitar and she sings this song.  Actually many of the songs she plays on her guitar are Carly Simon's and David Gates (from BREAD).

    P.... S....

Wish I could hear her sing.If she is half as good as this lady she would be brilliant.Love Carly Simon and her music.

    W.... S....

and i would still marry her

    W.... S....

I know. It is frightening how time passes. How can I reverse it!

  23. R.... M....

Magic, just magic.  Evocative lyrics and very atmospheric production.  Possibly the best track of all on 'No Secrets'.

    R.... M....

Indeed, I should go so far as to describe this song as anthemic.

    R.... M....

Yes, you are quite right. And what an anthem it is! Are the kids listening?

    R.... M....

    ...and 'Robin'

The album this was on, 'No Secrets', was her best, I think. Her voice soared, the lyrics unforgettable.

    N.... t....

Yes . Got the album too from the 70s. She was an essential, precious part of youth for many of us. I can believe Carly is 71 but don't want to.

  26. R.... A....

Today my father in law passed away. This song came to me, one of my Carly Simon favorites. So I searched YouTube and found your video here... Absolutely exquisite photo montages, thank u for posting your shared memories

  27. J.... S....

    J.... S....

Me too. Ditto all of the above..

  28. s.... i....

this is a great song, and an amazing video.

  29. N.... S....

Thank you for uploading this powerful song, in which a youngish woman (Carly Simon) says goodbye to her dead father, and muses about him, God, the relationship of the two, and her knowledge of God through her father.

Unfortunately, you have chosen to turn this posting into a photo album about boys and their mothers. The photographs are lovely, but what do they have to do with the song?
