Silent Comedy, The - Great American Novel Lyrics

I was born and raised an orphan
In a land that once was free
In a land that poured its love out on the moon
And I grew up in the shadows
Of your silos filled with grain
But you never helped to fill my empty spoon

When I was ten you murdered law
With courtroom politics
And you learned to make a lie sound just like truth
But I know you better now
And I don't fall for all your tricks
And you've lost the one advantage of my youth

You kill a black man at midnight
Just for talking to your daughter
Then you make his wife your mistress
And you leave her without water
And the sheet you wear upon your face
Is the sheet your children sleep on
And at every meal you say a prayer
You don't believe but still you keep on

And your money says in God we trust
But it's against the law to pray in school
You say we beat the russians to the moon
And I say you starved your children to do it

You are far across the ocean
In a war that’s not your own
And while you're winning there
You're gonna lose the one at home
Do you really think the only way
To bring about the peace
Is to sacrifice your children
And kill all your enemies

The politicians all make speeches
As the news men all take note
They exaggerate the issues
As they shove them down our throats
Is it really up to them
Whether this country sinks or floats
I wonder who would lead us
If none of us would vote

Well my phone is tapped and my lips are chapped
From whispering through the fence
You know every move I make
Or is that just coincidence
Well you try to make my way of life
A little less like jail
If I promise to make tapes and slides
And send them through the mail

And your money says in God we trust
But it's against the law to pray in school
You say we beat the russians to the moon
And I say you starved your children to do it
You say all men are equal, all men are brothers
Then why are the rich more equal than others
Don't ask me for the answers, I've only got one
That a man leaves his darkness when he follows the Son

Silent Comedy, The Great American Novel Comments
  1. K.... W....

Awesome! How come we can't reply to comments?

    K.... W....

+Kevin Wayne I don't know. Guess the reply box is dysfunctional.

  2. D.... ....

    why did it cut off?

  3. A.... m....

fantastic song. summarizes every veiw i have in it. so know point in joining the argument. this song is my argument

  4. d.... ....

Beautiful Song, one of the best bands ever

  5. c.... ....

This band is an amazing group if there songs are this thought provoking. Which they are.

  6. A.... D....

Yay! A sensible person! You are one of few sadly.

  7. P.... ....

On videos like this, I always recollect an xkcd comic about how awful youtube comments can get

  8. R.... ....

Well, I tried to approch it in a respectful way but that doesn't seem to work so let's try something more direct. christallh24 and others who want to stir the pot, this is a song on youtube, not a forum for argument. If you want to bash peoples life choices, do it somewhere else. Preferably in person like big boys and girls. Hiding behind a keyboard doesn't lend any credence to your point of view. Ease off the rhetoric or I'll just shut down the comments section.

  9. N.... P....

big comments hurt my head. Too many letters....

  10. S.... ....

    WEEEEHH.

Shut up and listen to the music. The comment section is not a place for fighting, but appreciation.

  11. T.... ....

As for what the song is protesting? Capitalism becoming our government instead of our economic system (I'm a capitalist and I agree that this is perverse). Racism (bigger problem when this was written). The abuse of the Disestablisment clause. The creation of projects that mattered more then morals or US citizens. And entering into wars that aren't ours.

  12. s.... g....

oh wow..im not sure but i hope your are on in "God we trust" side ....and im all about me and my kids praying our Chistly hearts out . This song speaks to the ones who stood up every morning and pledged allegiance to the flag and the Cristian flag and to the Bible...when we was FREE, And i want to bother people with God....what am i gonna say when i get to heaven and God asks me why i didnt tell people about him? Oh i would have God. but i didnt want to bother anyone.

  13. R.... ....

Ok,I think I should point out that again, this is a cover of a song written by Larry Norman (a Christian songwriter) in the 1970's. It's a protest song. Larry Norman was a sweet man who sung about love. Please not to rant about faith-hate and America-hate on here.

  14. J.... C....

I love this song..not sure if i agree with every word, but its good..

  15. N.... f....

    seconded.

  16. L.... S....

Anybody Else Feel Like These People Are Bringing Bakk America?

  17. m.... ....

    Gaaaayyyy

  18. m.... ....

@ftwrjosh yes, interesting. Not to change the subject or anything, but this is kinda like the time...

  19. J.... R....

@rastagirl247 also despite all the working and going to school, the government is still passing unconstitutional laws. Will your weekly income prevent and save someone who is held by the military without a trial or a right to a lawyer? No. We need to all meet in the middle on these issues and salvage what made this country great in the first place. After all a house divided against itself can not stand.

  20. J.... R....

@menacinggesture FTWR? Follow The White Rabbit? Hmm interesting

  21. J.... R....

@rastagirl247 Its good you work and go to school, I applaud you for that. As for me speaking "generally", I think if you re-read what I wrote you will see it's more specifically aimed at a certain type of person. Also by saying only annoying hipsters do it you are speaking generally about hipsters. Here's the thing, instead of getting worked up next time, take a minute to realize that what I was saying was targeting people unlike yourself. People who dont act in the right ways.

  22. m.... ....

@ftwrjosh Is this the guitarist from FTWR? Bout time top comment makes sense.

  23. C.... S....

@ftwrjosh You honestly shouldn't speak generally. There are some of us you aren't annoying hipsters who are out there ranting because it's the new thing to do. There are few of us who actually work or go to school,in my case, so we can change our country.

We are the 1% of the 99% who care.

  24. J.... R....

the 1% is probably still in control because the other 99% sit around on sites like youtube and facebook bitching about spilt milk. Do something about it if you want change, somethings need to change and some dont. Think about that next time your on your iphone texting your friends to meet you at 5th and market to protest capitalism :) Ohhh lets a take a video of us all for youtube yay change!

    Good song with good points.

  25. P.... L....

@dnrink44 blah blah blah. Go occupy another street hippy.

  26. S.... O....

    PS.......What a great song!

  27. S.... O....

I dont say shame on America! No not America. Its the name and meaning of an idea. Yes true, a name and idea that has YET to come true! No do not shame what some of us still believe in. A true and honest and equal future for all. DO NOT blame or shame an idea as pure as America. Blame and Shame those that have made it a dirty word. The 1% and those that ever wore or wanted to wear those sheets!

  28. I.... ....

    0:56 awww

  29. J.... D....

I don't think it's a citizen's fault that there are problems with the country. I personally agree that the majority of what the singer says here is true, but it doesn't mean that all of America is terrible, it just has faults.

  30. r.... ....

    Shame on America ...
    and everyone else.

  31. T.... ....

Your voice reminds me of "Dżem" polish great band

  32. s.... ....

Is amazing, every word is true, U.S.A shame on you

  33. T.... ....

    this is simply amazing

  34. b.... ....

it is a good song but i disagree with what it says.
