Is this based on a novel? I know the other TV series, Jack Holborn, was based on a book by Leon Garfield; not sure about Silas though.

+Heather Feather, it's based on a 10-book series by Danish author Cecil Bødker. Not sure if they were ever translated into English (possibly into German), but the books are a real treat! I was fortunate enough to get the entire series when they were on sale about five years ago and now have a baby daughter I look forward to sharing them with :-D

I remember watching this back when it was on BBC 1 back in summer 1986, the part in the 1st episode where the kid is beaten and forced to swallow the sword really stuck in my mind, it was pretty brutal for morning TV.

@99haynes I totally agree. It was way more than a kid is normally supposed to be exposed to.

Silas was produced by the German TV ZDF for Christmas 1981.

loved black beauty and silas...were my top tv programmes...also played this on my recorder and from here my mum went on to snap my prodigy casstette tape in half when i was 16! lol

She did  and then she tried to tear my prodigy book in half too! I was a bit obsessed with them and it was probably played a bit loud! I can see where is was coming from. I like a peaceful life these days too!

those childhood toys/possessions sometimes mean the entire world to us, hope you keep some of those stuff still, like most things we experience some of those happen only once. 

I have only memories left I am afraid :P

I remember doing lots of pranks and practical jokes on my teachers when I was a teenager and now, when I talk to my friends from those days, I laugh like crazy :)

I loved silas when i was four my mum knitted me a white cardigan and then I snapped my recorder in half , I also wanted a horse but I couldn't have one so my brother gave me piggy back ride around the house .have you got any footage of Goddick,....

oh yes i remember this and jack holborn same lad in both one use to be on bbc and the other on itv so iwatched one then turned it iver to watch the other lol good old days i loved black beauty and champion the wonderhorse, those were the good old days

I was born in 77 and I've never heard of this series, though the kid does look familiar.
