Because Democrats are more Social Progressive so (theoretically) more pro 'social' freedoms such as gay marriage and abortion. Smaller government does not necessarily mean more freedoms, it can result on state sponsored oppression becoming privately sponsored oppression, 'carte-blanche-for-the-rich-and-powerful' (well, that's what's going on these days anyway, the banking sector dictates and the gov't obeys). Let's say (hypothetically) that pollution regulations in Exampleburg are lifted: the local factory is now 'free' to dump their waste on the river and 'free' to decide whether to install or not filters in their chimneys. What happens? That you're not free to use running water anymore and you're forced to purchased bottled water to drink, and you're not free to go jogging because there's toxic smog all over your neighborhood.

@david roth I agree with John, and would also add that as I see, there is a tough split in hardcore and traditional punk thinking on the state and the government: most hardcorre guys are not anarchists but democrats, and as I see, the emphasis on social action is stronger. And social action is really not a job for a small state. However, most pf them are also against a toguh state controll, but its the question of prvacy, not helping the poor. And it seems the GOP is for big bussinesses, not really for everyday people (and also they are for a strong introduction into private life, see the Patriot Act). On the pther hand, with the DNC name I do not think it would be a pro-democrat song either... :))

Isn't Libertarianism (Fuck Authority) the most popular theme within the punk scene? Maybe it's a pedantic difference but it seems a little more straight up punk as opposed to hardcore (yes the genres are similar but they are separate genres).  Not a bad thing but I reckon the more heavy end of things probably suits them better.
