I fell in love with her when l was 25, in 1976, and my partner of 30 years, whom l had only met weeks earlier, took me to meet a friend who was a Bassey fan. Since then l have seen her live many times in London and Boston, where in the late 80s l did her makeup. Her duet with Robert Goulet of "You Don't Send Me Flowers' is heartbreaking.

I'm from the USA, and I second your comment! It's unfortunate, but because Shirley was born before WWII, and thus before the YouTube generation, so many young listeners outside of the UK don't know who she is unless you reference James Bond. Something else that urks me is when you look at the 'Best Vocalist' websites and singers like Britney Spears are ranked higher! Common! I understand that the younger generation doesn't relate to the amazing vocal abilities and qualities of Shirley Bassey, but the professionals who understand musical attributes should no better. They classify her as the 'Belter', but most fans know of how she can sing a simple lullaby beautifully with superbly rich and smooth sounds. But, thankfully to YouTube, more and more of the younger generation who are looking for great vocalists of the past stumble on to Shirley, and most become fans!

She embarrasses the teenybop girlie's, she is in a league of her own, pure class. To be precise she is from Tiger Bay, South Wales UK. She has everything, she is like a Godess. Tina Turner was as good but in different ways. I can't stop listening to her now, and thanks for the comment.

Although Shirley loves it when people consider her the voice of Bond, lets not forget that she also is the voice of 900+ Recordings (Studio and Live), and she has been in the business for 65+ years. And, only a handful of her recordings are 'Bond-Style' songs. She is one of the truly GREATS when it comes to vocal ability, and is top notch as a live performer. Anyone who takes any unbiased time to listen to the hundreds upon hundreds of recordings and live performances that I have uploaded from the 1950's through the 2000's will know that you don't reach ICON level without having a huge/wide range of talent. Over the years she has recorded just about every style of music genre there is, and in 2001 she was rewarded by being inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records as a the largest selling female artist in the UK.

Many of the singer's of Shirley's generation don't even know what that is. I saw an interview with Aretha Franklin a few months ago and the interviewer asked her if she had ever used Auto Tune. Her Answer: What is that? I'm sure it's the same way with Shirley. They had to sing the old fashion way, and by practicing with grueling vocal excercises on a regular basis to make perfect. And, It has worked for both of these great ladies of music.

This song is from the musical, 'A Chorus Line'.   Priscilla Lopez played the character Diana Morales in this musical, and she led the song with other members of the cast to perform this song as one of the closing numbers.  This musical opened at the Shubert Theatre on Broadway back in 1975.   Priscilla won the Obie Award and Tony Award for her performance.   Shirley is one of the first professional recording artists to record this song as she included it on her 1976 album titled, 'Love, Life and Feelings'.  A few recording artists recorded this song in 1975 shortly after it debuted on Broadway, including Beverly Bremers, Petula Clark, Johnny Mathis, and Jack Jones.

Oh the days when we had true artists like this. Her voice, I can't describe it. Just a natural singer, with no effort to roll that song out. She also did it without a light show and a dozen singers bouncing around too. Miss TRUE natural talent like this in modern times.
