Honestly, I never heard of her until iHeartRadio added her to my Nancy Wilson station year-before-last. And now, thanks to this video, I have seen her in action for the first time. Wow, and wow. No wonder Europe loved her. What a beautiful, powerful superstar.

Her rendition of Funny Girl is awful, no depth or soul.....my man is better....

Streisand and Bassey are good friends as evidenced during the 2013 post Oscar party, photos of which shows these two grand dames sitting together and having fun.

@mannail888 - You are right on!  And, what is most important is that each artist has, over the years, complemented the other's amazing talent.   I for one, enjoy both these wonderful singers as they each bring something different to the table, while both recording many of the same songs over the past XXX decades.  

No two ways about it: Bassey possesses probably the most powerful voice of all time in pop music.

I kept thinking what other female vocalists in the annals of pop music that can give Bassey a run for her money in the department of power, and a couple of names readily come to mind: Minnelli, her mother, Garland, Melissa Manchester, Houston, Ann Wilson from the band "Heart" and Etta James. Ladies who more or less share the same vocal range as Bassey as well as the ability to rattle the rafters. Bassey, however, is unique in that she preserved her vocal instrument better than those aforementioned ladies, as attested by her floor-shaking performance of the theme song to "Goldfinger" in the 2013 Oscars ceremony, who by then was already 76 yrs old.

Dame Bassey's voice certainly has aged better than Streisand's - as evidenced at this year's Oscar ceremony. "Goldfinger" was quite possibly the BEST OSCAR PERFORMANCE EVER - Bassey mopped the stage with poor, sad, tired Barbra. Gives her a definite run for her money here as well. FABULOUS!

dddsb Poor? Tired? Sure if you compare Babs singing the same song maybe a full step under the original to Shirley singing her own songs several steps under, that makes sense. Don't shit talk Babs, her technique has always been better. Bassey has no dynamics, either whispering or LOUD.

You are right. No doubt about it. Just as there is no doubt that Barbra is a class act, a great singer at any age, and doesn't deserve what dddsb said about her. Those words were low rent, narrow minded, and unnecessary. They are both wonderful human beings with giant hearts and even bigger talent.

at 1.47 (on the graham norton show) are michael sheen (next to shirley) and rhod gilbert (yes, he does spell it like that!). they're both welsh.

`MY MAN` is particularly good. Surprisingly it was an out take from Shirley`s 1978 LP `YESTERDAYS`. it remained in the archives until it was released in 1994 on a special set `THE EMI-UNITED ARTISTS YEARS 1959-1979` which contains other gems.

in case you don't know her, the woman with shirley when she got her DBE is barbara windsor.

Hi Margot..You know I always give cudos to all artists when they deserve it, just like Dame Shirley would, but so many people just can't. The fact is that Shirley and Barbra have sung so many of the same songs over the last half century, and they have recorded so much music because people love their singing. I tend to find something positive in all singers, and I enjoy both these ladies. And, such classics should be sung by many different artists, as they bring something different to songs..
