It's funny, usually people call something with no melody, or a melody with a few very repeated notes, 'not music'. This is the first time I've seen someone take a tune with a very prominent melody with many different notes that goes all over the place, and say it's 'not music'. I can understand someone not liking the tune or band, but not how this does not qualify as 'music'. What then, to you, is 'music'?

I hear that, but it goes somewhere else. But- you're right that the chord progressions are really similar, and one part of the melody (about a bar long). The two tunes have different vibes. That one, despite being Brazilian, almost strikes me as French in a way. It might be the use of modality, or the curious / whimsical qualities of the instrumentation / repetition / use of sound effects. Also, the overall effect of that track is extremely Beatles - Sgt. Pepper - y... this one, by contrast, does sound very Beach Boys, with probably some Kinks thrown in. Of course, they're all original tunes.

It's just so beautifully written. As much as I love this song and record, I still don't like the drum tones! If this was recorded closer to the Wincing days it would be the greatest eargasm.

This is so nostaglic of my Sophmore year in highschool. Thanks, Shins<3 You have the ability to allow me to replay vivid memories in my mind when I listen to this album--and song in particular.

Unfortunately, I never really acknowledged their music in high school. I am so glad I found them now, they speak to my soul. Long live The Shins!

I was a sophomore as well when this came out; I am 30. This group had such an impact on my youth.

I discovered the Shins in 2005 as a senior in high school and freaked out in a really good way. I also discovered Death Cab for Cutie around the same time. As much as I like the latter band, I think the Shins have a higher quality-to-quantity ratio for their output, but of course everybody is entitled to their opinion.

I love the retro sound of this!

James Mercer was inspired by the beach boys and has a similar sweet light tenor voice to Carl Wilson.  Light tenors are kind of a rarity in pop music to be honest just like light lyric sopranos are.

I just wish I had more than 87 cents so I could buy all The Shin's abums, plus ringtones of their songs.

On my second listen I do hear a Kink sound--it's like a Kink backing track with a Beach Boys' melody with Ray Davies/Brian Wilson singing. It doesn't get any better than that. All those nasayers who think that only the "good old days" have good music need to listen to The Shins, Eels, etc. There is still great music all around us.
