Shenandoah - Under The Kudzu Lyrics

Well I live all alone in Chickasaw County
Out on the 109
Where the rundown barns and rusty tractors
Are covered in kudzu vine
Now for 85 years my people raised cotton
'Til granddaddy lost this land
Now we're scattered all over this end of the state
Gettin' by anyway that we can
But..

[Chorus:]
Under the kudzu, the mighty South lies sleepin'
Dreamin' of glory, that slowly slipped away
And on nights like this, boys, I can almost hear her weepin'
Out there under the kudzu

If you follow that hot tar road down to Jackson
You'll pass through Plantersville
That's where I worked and spent my money
Until they closed down the mill
I got real bad to-drinks and my sweet Samantha
Packed up her things and moved
I hear she's a qualified beautician
Workin' down in Baton Rouge
And...

[Chorus]

Yes I walk on over to the Pit Stop Market
And buy me a Coke to drink
I lay on the hood of this old Camaro
And wait for the sun to sink

On nights like this, boys, I can almost hear her weepin'
Out there under the kudzu
Out there under the kudzu

I recently started driving for Uber to make some cash on the side. I put together a "mix tape" CD of some country music from this era. In general, when I show up to pick up riders, I offer them an auxiliary cable or offer to change to whatever they want on the radio (which sometimes I end up regretting, but hey, if it makes them happy...).

I picked up 3 young guys from a fraternity who were headed to one of the clubs in town. It was a relatively short drive, but I offered to change the music. They said no, it was fine. This was one of the 2 songs that played during the short trip.

About half-way through the trip, one of the guys says to the other two, "You know, this music is better than anything we're going to hear tonight." He clarified that it was music with meaning and a message. One of the others agreed and said, "Wouldn't it be great if they played stuff like this at the club?"

That left me with something like a feeling of hope for the future. just thought I'd share.

This was probably their best album/CD, full of great songs like this one. I can listen to this album all day. Back when I bought this album I had not heard this song and didn't expect much. By the time it had finished playing the first time, I was hooked on this song and had to play it about 10 times in a row. It's sort of an anthem to the lost glory of the South I guess, although I think the South is doing just fine.

they are a great band OR were! :-/ I really miss the 90's!!!

Under The Kudzu will always be one of my favorite Shenandoah albums and the title song is one of the reasons why.

Haven't heard this one in a long time. Should have been a chart topper, but it must have been stifled by their other songs.
