Shenandoah - Freebird In The Wind Lyrics

"A brief candle, both ends burning. A weary mile, a bus wheel turning. A friend to share the lonely times. A handshake and a sip of wine. So say it loud and let it ring that we're all part of everything: the present, future, and the past. Fly on, proud bird, you're free at last."

They waved goodbye to Greenville
As they all boarded that plane
Destination Baton Rouge
But that was all about to change
When that Convair started struggling
And soon gave up the fight
A southern rock band from Jacksonville
Became legends overnight

No help for miles around
No consolation to be found

There's a place in Gillsburg, Mississipi
Some call sacred ground
It sits back in a lonely place
Where the world came crashing down
Behind the "No Trespassing" sign
Where few have ever been
And some swear every nightfall
You could hear
Freebird in the wind

There's an old beech tree that keeps watch
From sunrise till dark
With the title of that famous song
Carved inside the bark
For some, it feels like yesterday
Since that fateful flight
That claimed the lives of those poor young souls
On that sad October night

How could anyone survive,
When a 10-ton bird falls from the sky?

There's a place in Gillsburg, Mississipi
Some call sacred ground
It sits back in a lonely place
Where the world came crashing down
Behind the "No Trespassing" sign
Where few have ever been
And some swear every nightfall
You could hear
Freebird in the wind

(Freebird in the wind)

There's a place in Gillsburg, Mississipi
Some call sacred ground
It sits back in a lonely place
Where the world came crashing down
Behind the "No Trespassing" sign
Where few have ever been
Some swear every nightfall
You could hear
Freebird in the wind
Freebird in the wind

    Dwan AllMan?
    This sing isn't about birds.
    Why do I bother?
You should always do yourself the service of listening to the studio recording before going to a live version. You might have been able to better comprehend the lyrics.

  2. G.... M....

no, I have a feeling its about a guy leaving a girl. I've always loved this song but the lyrics aren't all that inspiring. At least he's being honest with her.

  3. J.... ....

Rumor has it, Allen Collins' girlfriend at the time was not happy with how much time he spent playing the guitar as opposed to spending time with her was fed up and asked him "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" Seeing as Allen is the main soloist (in all white) in the video, I think we could imagine what happens. Cheers India, thank you for the listen.

  4. J.... T....

    Ita a breakup song sweetheart

  5. M.... M....

A lot of guys "lost" their girlfriends that day.

  6. M.... M....

Beautiful song which I want played at my funeral. As then I will be free of all this pain. Big fans of yours from the UK hunni. Xx

  7. F.... H....

At 7:10 everyone knew what was about to happen except for India.
    Priceless

  8. F.... H....

    One of those perfect songs

  9. K.... A....

Cool video, and a good song..must have been a blast to be there..if you could stand all the crowdiness........The pianist looked like he was having an orgasm there, playing like there was no tomorrow.....cool guitar solos there too....The audience surely got their money´s worth in this song,I thought it would never end ;) I enjoyed watching when the camera swiped out over the audience...very cool that..

  10. T.... L....

Thank you for giving Lynyrd Skynyrd an honest reaction. Please give the Ballad of Curtis Loew a listen.

  11. P.... F....

    You are so hot!

  12. x.... 0....

Day on the green 77, Oakland Coliseum, every time I watch this video it makes me almost tear up when Ronnie Van Zant says "play it pretty for Oakland" also I remember going to the movies later that year to see "Cheech and Chongs Up In Smoke" and some other movie and in between them there was this beautiful 15 min. tribute for Lynyrd Skynyrd telling about what happened and paying tribute to them after the crash.

  13. p.... z....

Ronnie V had a nose full of blow on this. I gigged for years. He's jumping the timing on the intro. Then he fixed it. Seen this sort of thing a thousand times.

  14. T.... ....

I recall the first time I saw them & the last time I saw them & all the times in between. They played the 3 day Ozark Music Festival in Sedalia, MO July 1974 & they rocked the fairgrounds alive. They lived hard & are almost all in Heaven's Band now. The concerts like this, may they RIP. We went to them in the heat of the summer, not many overweight in those crowds!! Just took what we needed & did without all the pop, chips & munchies! Rock n roll like it was....glad you reacted India & hope you enjoyed the anthem for LS. Sad to see a fellow Okie Steve Gaines playing, I have often wandered how it was for his parents, losing him & Cassie both in the crash. Tragic. Rock on India.....

  15. M.... B....

Between 9:36 and for a few seconds later, DID ANYONE ELSE SEE THAT GALS SIDE BOOB FLASH? Or is it just me being a Dirty Old Man thinking of days past? haha And just think, Everyone of those kids are now GRANDPARENTS. If I was there, I'd be showing it to my Grandkids to show "Paw-Paw" was one cool dude.

  16. M.... B....

And Mr. Billy Powell, If you'll notice plays this with his EYES CLOSED. Tell me the man ain't good and I'll disagree or Cuss You Out. Gary Rossington (dark hair using the slide) and Al Collins (dude in white) are bad ass with a guitar. But Ronnie Gaines was younger and just as good, but he died in the plane crash. These Mutha's are still Southern Rock Icons.

  17. L.... W....

The recorded album version is better than this, they must be a little drunk because some sounds sound off and out of tune.

  18. f.... s....

This is a really nice song, however it got butchered on this stage... :/

  19. A.... M....

Words of a player hahaha hes a player..playaaa. Cmon india you know it him meaning

  20. M.... S....

Will you do Lynyrd Skynyrd Mr. Breeze?

  21. J.... J....

  22. w.... S....

play the live music video of YANKEE ROSE BY VAN HALEN

  23. M.... A....

Your theory is warping the meaning and pretty sexist. It could be a women singing this to.

  24. C.... C....

If you can remember the 70's you weren't there!

  25. D.... S....

Wow...I was at that show...July 1977...Carlos Santana, the Outlaws, Skynyrd and Peter Frampton. One of the legendary "Day On The Green" shows that Oakland had every year! It was a gorgeous day filled with incredible music...and Free Bird was just INSANE! Oh to be 18 again! (lol)

  26. l.... ....

It's a shame a few months later a plane crash killed him, his guitarist and sister. On a side note in case you wondered their publisher came up with the idea of the band having a confederate battle flag because every time they would go too Europe they would be called Yanks. And well they are a southern rock band. So it was a stunt that worked well to distinguish them from other bands. But they never even thought one way or another on what the flag really meant historical. Just they're southern and proud off where they were born and raised. In a documentary the surviving band members said they didn't even know about the flag until they went out on stage one night and this big giant monstrous sized flag was hanging behind them. Kind of funny in it's own way.

  27. D.... O....

  31. V.... ....

  32. a.... ....

I was 16 then and it still gives me chills today!!!!!

  33. M.... ....

On October 20, 1977, a Convair CV-240 passenger aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed in a wooded area near Gillsburg, Mississippi. Lead vocalist/founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist and vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray all died as a result of the crash.  This heartbreaking accident put an abrupt end to the 1970s era of the band. So every time I see this video I appreciate what they did and the fact that we have a record of their masterful performance.  So glad you are able to see them in action!

  34. n.... l....

Shine down has a cover of simple Man.... I've put two of my family members in the ground with this song playing. Live free...... Love life......

  38. B.... T....

Live free. That's the message..... Sweet home Alabama was probably the first reaction from another artist......who was Neil Young's southern man.....
The band wrote the whole song on plane trip. Lot of history 😎🥰😍

  39. D.... F....

"For years Skynyrd has always closed the show with that song and the song has different meanings for different people. This kid was telling me that they used it for their graduation song and not too long ago somebody told me that they used it at a funeral. And really it's a love song, it's one of the few that Lynyrd Skynyrd's ever had. It's about a guy and a girl. Of course, at the end, it was dedicated to Duane Allman from the band Allman Brothers because it goes into the guitar part. If you can get through that one you've had a good night at a Skynyrd show."

The lyrics are about a man explaining to a girl why he can't settle down and make a commitment. The opening lines, "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" were inspired by Allen Collins' girlfriend Kathy, who had asked him this very question during a fight.

  40. D.... F....

Free as a bird means out of the cage! LOL!
If someone is free as a bird or free as the air, they are completely free and have no worries or troubles.
I have been island-hopping in the Pacific for the past two and a half years, free as a bird.
In other words, I can't be tightened down.

  42. j.... m....

This is a time when thd Confederate battle flag was not considered rascist . Just southern pride. They would have been banned and protested today.

    j.... m....

It was always racist the difference is that around that time people could still get away with flying it. NO MORE

  43. j.... m....

That time is when the woman were not heavy. Only maybe 10% were chunky. I think a fat gene is in the food now , prove me wrong.

  44. I.... M....

I love the track but always disliked the fake “bird tweets.”

  45. I.... M....

At the start of the recording session at Mussel Shoals, the band had no idea that their keyboard player could play like this. It was only when he improvised to amuse himself during the lunch break , they discovered that he had been classically trained.

  49. A.... A....

I love this Skynyrd live video. I love the Founding Fathers so their stage set was #1 to me! Allen Collins was an absolute genius on Guitar. He was an original member. Unfortunately 3 months and 18 days after this was recorded the plane crash over Mississippi happened. We lost Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and his sister Cassie; a backup singer, assistant road Manager Dean Fitzpatrick and 2 pilots Walter McCreary and Bill Gray all died in the crash. Anyway they were a genius band. Ronnie knew how to keep his band in control. They were one of the greatest bands to ever exist. I wear a Lynyrd Skynyrd Tshirt all the time. Thanks!

I was in middle-school/high school when this came out, and it's always been inspirational to me. I'm an individualist and DEFINITELY am who I am and go my own way, and have ALWAYS related to this song so well. A local band did this at our junior HS prom and it was AMAZING!!!!! Great performance!! Great days when a bunch of kids could meet up in a buddy's garage and beat out some tunes and make it big! No digital enhancements, no computers, just them and amplification.... ...OK, Ed King was a big help, true.... ...and every group of kids with an ax and a few spare bucks to buy some equipment were in their garages, imitating the greats who originated from theirs, and hoping just like they did.
Hard to imagine that NONE of these people in just a few months after that video was shot would be whole; two dead. A brother and sister gone. A father lost; the guy that changed southern rock forever. Nobody left that plane unchanged alive or dead. One rocks on....

  63. B.... K....

Omg this woman is talking about birds. Smh get off the Internet. You arnt worthy of the money that come with this.

  64. D.... B....

And yes that's over 80,000 people at that concert!

  65. D.... B....

My friends and I actually did an air band contest in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1978 with this song from thier Gold and Platinum album. We won on a Friday night, and were invited to come back the next night to go up against the winners from the week before. That Friday we got $300., and Saturday night could have won $500 . more but a couple of the guys in the air-band we were to play against knew us and pitched a bitch because my friends were 17yrs old, and I was the only 18yr old. The asshole manager refused to let us play, and the crowd there were really pissed off. But it is the law, no one under 18yrs old is allowed in the bar without a parent or guardian. And my friends parents didn't know what we were doing, and they didn't approve of our music anyway, so we had to leave. But we got $100 . each from Friday night. That was the only time I have ever done anything in front of about 350 people, especially cheering people.
Oh , and yes, we had made our air guitars cut from wood, and painted to look real for me and one friend and the other friend had a drum set made of 4 five gallon buckets and simbles made of cardboard. And us two on guitars nailed the whole last part of the song where it's only guitars playing.

This song always evokes such emotion in me because of the tragic loss of half the members, the pain and suffering of the remaining members after the crash, and their family. It never really got better for them, I mean how could it after all such a horrific thing to have happen. I do love that his lil brother took on the helm, and it was cool they went on to continue a tribute to such a great band.

    g.... ....

I saw Steven Van Zandt at Ruth Chris Steak House in Nashville about 10 years ago. He was with a gorgeous blonde half his age. Martina McBride went to his table to speak to him ignoring the blonde. I was with my best friend and he was a dead ringer for Willie Nelson except my friend was 6 5. They put us in a back room with the musicians. I told my friend they probably thought you were Willie. lol

What a waste they perpetrated on a generation. So many teenagers dead trying to emulate or either idolize skynyrd. I almost died myself in a high powered automobile, drunk, stoned, listening to skynyrd. Now I'm 60. Watched most of my friends die. Alcohol and drugs. I'm seeing the end of the trail myself. Alcohol has ruined my heart. Drugs get me up and down. Learned it all at skynyrd's feet. That's why they died I think. To remove a false god. And I mean everyone worshiped. I'm not claiming to be a victim. Just didn't make better choices while following the crowd.

  75. M.... S....

Only the best band ever formed. Gary Rossington, the best most under rated guitarist to ever grace the stage. Thanks.

Dying song of the 70's. Wish we were all still there in simpler times. Just a lousy opinion. Don't take me too serious, I'm 60 now, so....

    C.... B....

@glprime2814 I should have included the 80's. No excuse for that. Because a person's formative year's are your teen's AND 20's. Now, dying of Lung Cancer, it gives me a great perspective on my life and whether I was a good person, did I help anyone or contribute in any way. Please, if you smoke, please stop. Having a Lung removed is no picnic, believe me. You just scream for the first 4 day's.

    C.... B....

@glprime2814 No shame taken sir. I think about 75% of people would say the same thing. I only live 85 mile's from Fort Drum. Home to the 10th Mountain Division and the recently added the capability to launch Nuclear Weapon's. So I'm sure we are on the list of spot's to nuke first. We also have an Aluminum Smelter; an Extrusion Dept. and a Wire, Rod and Bar Division. I was President the last 5 year's of Local 420-A of the United Steelworkers. When I retired I took my cell phone and threw it away. After sleeping with it every night in case anyone got injured or worse killed by Alcoa Inc. I had 28 year's at that plant. Also worked for a beer distributor for 9 year's and was a Teamster. Before that 4 year's in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Sill.

    C.... B....

Christopher Baldwin as an Army Brat who is unable to serve, I thank you for doing so. I’m sad to say, I am addicted to the thing (cell phone), just like 90% of the nation, and would probably never see any attack coming, even with the airraid sirens blaring at full volume

    C.... B....

@glprime2814 You called it! First laugh today about the air raid alarm! All we have in my little backwater town is the Fire whistle! Thank you for your recognition and have a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas! Best..Chris

  83. k.... ....

Yes. Lynyrd Skynrd. I saw this group in an outdoor venue. They were great. I was very fortunate to see them, because two months after that, they died. Did anyone know the group's name is in honor of a gym teacher/nemesis named Leonard Skinner. Fly high free bird.

  84. J.... B....

Notice the Confederate flag, Nobody considered it RACIST back then.it was more a symbol of rebellion and being anti establishment.and just an old fashioned symbol of the South.People weren't easily offended back then.If they were offended no one gave a shit.

  85. D.... N....

I was in high school when they came about.  The same for The Allman Brothers Band in my home town.  When I was high school they had this thing down at Central City Park on the weekends in the summer where upstart bands would play.  If your parents didn't let you go down there you could watch them on one of the TV stations live.  This is one of those songs that will get your blood pumping once you get into it.  Let's go cut the rug at a place called The Jug....

  86. W.... M....

The very first ' Soul ' album was recorded at FAME Recording Studio by Aretha Franklin. FAME Studio is still there in Muscle Shoals ,Alabama. At one time FAME was the home of most the Hit Records recorded in the world. Ric Hall founded FAME Recording Studio first in Florence,Alabama but soon moved it to Muscle Shoals.

  87. W.... M....

" Free Bird" was recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio ,located on Jackson Highway ,Sheffield ,Alabama along with the rest of the album. Recorded by Jimmy Johnson. Been driving by that place all my life I grew up not far from there. Remember the day in high school after the plane crash that took most of their lives.

  88. M.... T....

I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd years after the plane crash. Ronnie, Steve and Cassie. The singer walked up to the microphone. He said, “ There is only one man who could sing this. “. Then he put the hat on the mike and walked away. The band played and we, the audience, sang the entire song.

  89. K.... N....

Thank you. I was there. "Oakland colosseum, Day on The Green", 1977. I attended 3 out of 5 of these concerts. So hot. Saw a lot of great bands that summer. My favorites were Skynard, Foreigner, and Cheap Trick ( their debut). Cheap Trick had a lot of energy.

  90. L.... Y....

Great rock band. October 20th is a sad day. We lost Ronnie, Steve and Cassie that day.

You should listen to Simple Man. Another great song by the band.

  91. i.... ....

To bad you didn't watch the video recorded in England instead of this one. IMO, the camera work was not good at all. And I agree, this song is Wow and crazy. Few if any guitar solos are better than Allen on this one.

  92. B.... C....

Whoa, did I just wake up with another tattoo and conceive another child!!! 🤘🤘 Love your hair.

  93. L.... R....

    Another day and time

  94. R.... B....

they did this in London too and blew the Rolling Stones off the stage. there is video from that show too, floating around.

  95. J.... C....

Sadly the film coverage of this was pretty crappy.... showed a lot of the crowd but not the musicians. Most of those guys are dead now.

  96. S.... W....

Worst version of Free Bird you could have picked.

  97. C.... Q....

It is amazing that back then you hardly see anyone that is overweight!

  98. c.... j....

    that crowd was jumping

  99. M.... K....

I was there at the left side of the stage. It was very hot out and lots of girls had their boobs out and wearing shorts... Skynyrd had us all feeling like a big family. It was an awesome show!

  100. M.... A....

I graduated high school in 1983, and "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me " was my senior quote. This song is one of the greatest songs ever recorded.
