Shawn Colvin - The Bird Lyrics

I might go to the mountains of Spain
And I'll see all the pretty snow,
And I'll dream the dream I dream
No matter where I go

We were still young like when we met,
And I hadn't fucked it all up yet,
And you wanted me to be with you
Like before

What I like about time is it don't ask why
What I like about love is it makes me cry
What I like about the bird is she don't need
Nothing but sky...

And I know you tried to tell me then
No one could bear the shit I put on them
I bet you wonder why you even let me in
Well, so do I.

In my dream I never make you pay
For all the things you did and did not say
I was ready to be good to you
And make you stay

And you took me to the carnival town,
And we rode the rides up and down,
And we watched the birds watch us smile,
And then they flew away

What I like about time is it don't ask why
What I like about love is it makes me cry
What I like about the bird is she don't need
Nothing but sky...

And I know you think my life's a crime
And you talk about it with your wife sometimes
Y'all shake your heads and sigh
Oh believe me, I shake mine.

March 28, 2015 - San Marcos, Texas - Dear Shawn, Just thought I'd share that I'm sitting outside here outside my little red tin shack that I live in now while I was listening to you do 'Tennessee Waltz' and a little female red cardinal skipped over and hopped up on top of this little pile of wood behind which is 10 acres of open field. I thought back about a line I wrote in 2007 'cardinals red on red shack, back from who knows where, all the latest news they'll sing..." etc...I never understood what the 'red shack' was all about but left it in thinking it would come clear later and it did...this morning. ..just a few weeks ago I was in Pensacola, Fla and wrote the line: "I'm in a box, I'm on the moon, I'm upside down in an eternal June..." etc...and then two weeks later here I am living in what is literally a red box on this beautiful property and I 'know' it is something of 'grace'...no doubt...I have a very comfy bed and a/c in my little red box but the point is that so often we write things that are prophetic in minor ways but when we stop to notice them and how they weave in and out of the fabric of our lives they are so 'significant'...interestingly, all of these thousands of tiny points of synchronicity that have composed my adult life seem to involve you somehow...like this morning listening to you and the little red cardinal dances around in front of my red shack for a few minutes!!! I was thinking of you BIG TIME! God Bless You Candlekin! That's all I'm trying to say! Peace
