Shawn Colvin - Shotgun Down The Avalanche Lyrics

I'm riding shotgun down the avalanche
Tumbling and falling down the avalanche

So be quiet tonight the stars
shine bright
On this mountain of new fallen snow
But I will raise up my voice into
the void
You have left me nowhere to go

I love you so much and it's so bizarre
A mystery that goes on and on and on
This is the best thing and the very
most hard
And we don't get along

After countless appeals we keep
spinning our wheels
On this mountain of new fallen snow
So I let go the catch and we are
over the edge
You have left me nowhere to go

I'm riding shotgun down the avalanche

Sometimes you make me lose my will
to live
And just become a beacon for your soul
But the past is stronger than my will
to forgive
Forgive you or myself, I don't know

I'm riding shotgun down the avalanche
Tumbling and falling down the avalanche

So be quiet tonight be sure to
step lightly
On this mountain of new fallen snow
But I will raise up my voice into
the void
You have left me nowhere to go

I'm riding shotgun down the avalanche

I loved this song when I heard it for the first time in the early 90s. It fought through my opaque memory again the other day and now I realize it is without a doubt the best song I've ever heard...the best written, the best performed, the best produced. Now it's on rinse and repeat. Can't get enough of it. Thank you Shawn.

Riding shotgun down the avalanche. I cannot think of a more apt description of being caught up in the chaotic free fall frenzy of a lovers embrace, knowing full well the two of you aren't well suited for each other.... no where left to go indeed.

I missed seeing you at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival... I only went one other time. I believe you were one of top talents that played that day. God Bless

    W.... S....

Ah Telluride, learned how to ski the steep there. Trial by fire " you have to agress (sic) the mountain".

My wife is Australian and on our last visit I introduced her cousin to this song. He has a state of the art 'sound room' where he can listen to music and this sounded great. Shawn now has yet another fan.

  13. D.... D....

its got a blue grass feel to it

  14. T.... ....

Still sends chills down my spine whenevrr i hear it. I heard it is written about her abortion experience. Funny because i feel so keenly alive when i listen to it. There is a sense of desperation around it and that seems to be when i feel most alive. I think some people get addicted to that feeling, like the streets.

The first time I heard this was on an L.A. station on 94.7 that at the time was called "The Wave." it took over from being a total rock station to primarily new age, alternative folk, etc. I'd never heard of Shawn Colvin until I heard it. It gave me chills it was so awesome! The melody, the lyrics, her amazing voice! From that point on whenever it would come on I would crank the radio!

  16. S.... ....

    Stunning

To this day, i consider STEADY ON to be the best start-to-finish album i've ever heard... thank you Shawn and John for your genius... I'd be honored if some SC fans would check out my acoustic keyboard & vocal cover of THE HEART OF SATURDAY NIGHT (which Shawn covered from Tom Waits) on my channel in tribute to her legendary voice. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thanks and pardon the promo.

August 17, 2017 - Dear Shawn Colvin, It's impossible for me to adequately express how much you and your magical voice mean to me but I wrote a poem to try. I think it may sound lame and overly effusive but this is how it came out. I hope you might accept is as a token of my eternal gratitude for all the beauty you've brought to my heart through your mystical songs. I love you so much Shawn. Thank you for being 'here'. Peace

    Her Voice

    With her golden voice
    she called the poison out
you can sing you can shout
    but I know everything
    and I command you now
    don't drink of this again
    don't think of this again
    don't speak of it again
    With her love
she brought me to my knees
    she listened to my pleas
    don't leave me here alone
don't leave me in this place
    don't take away your grace
And when she shined her light
'I saw the dark for what it was
    Heaven is her face
I saw the illusion of choice
    chaos or her voice
    weeping or her voice
    death or her voice
    I listened to her sing
the sweetest pain her voice can bring
    so clean and so bright
    I listen every night
and I cherish what I feel
cause I know this pain is real
this heartache she sang into me
    that set me free
I know there is no choice
    between freedom and her voice
no space between love and her voice
    nothing but her voice

    end

I always hope I might be blessed with better poems for you. I will continue trying to express how deeply you affect me and how grateful I am that you're on Earth with all of us. Love/Peace

i am still seeking that woman who first played this song for me in Bethel, Alaska...

    v.... ....

the sun was rising over the Kuskokwim river and you were sitting in the kitchen window sipping tea. and i listened to this tape your were sharing with me! i will die with that image!

@vazmo14850 I often think about how some of these life experiences stick with you, so much more than others. We have lovers who made such great impacts on our lives, and may never see again. But they will always be with us, hope you find her!

Love the guitar work starting at 2:20 on to about 2:38.

    J.... E....

    That's Mark Knopfler

    J.... E....

rogdodge54 doesn't say so on the liner notes.

    J.... E....

    @rogdodge54 not

    J.... E....

@David Zwonto I know, this is second person who think they know who the guitar player is. According to the cd sleeve, on that song, John Leventhal was electric guitar and Shawn Colvin is on acoustic guitar. There is another person named T-Bone Wolk on a guitar solo, but that is on Diamond in the rough. Could have been Shawn Colvin, I wouldn't doubt she could play that for a moment!

    J.... E....

@rogdodge54 I believe you are incorrect, there is no mention of Mark Knopfler on the cd notes.

  35. R.... Z....

I thank you SC 4 this song and your beauty

  36. B.... P....

  37. P.... M....

  38. P.... M....

    Very good song

  39. C.... S....

I forgot what a terrific song this is... love Shawn Colvin!

To this day, i consider STEADY ON the best start-to-finish album i've ever heard... thank you Shawn and John for your genius... I'd greatly appreciate it if some Shawn Colvin fans would check out my 'Tube channel devoted to unplugged piano & vocal covers of 80s/90s classics. Covers include Sting, PRINCE, George Michael, John Mayer (early), Pete Townshend, Counting Crows, Coldplay, and Billy Joel. Thanks and please pardon the promo.

  40. J.... ....

I first heard this song on KERA 90.1 FM in Dallas during the early 90's when they used to play music all day. I have loved it ever since, and the more I listened to the lyrics, they more they resonated with me. Shawn Colvin is an exceptional singer/songwriter, and I will always be a fan.

    J.... ....

    So did I !

  42. d.... H....

i saw her in the 80's at the bottom line in manhattan with bruce hornsby. one of the most beautiful shows i have ever been to.

    d.... H....

Wow. Both beautiful writers and performers specifically at that time.

  43. D.... G....

    What a hauntingly beautiful voice!

    D.... G....

    Haunting, yes, that is it.

  44. D.... M....

Have always loved this song...regardless of some of the comments clueless folks like Beatrix Phocas made...love me some Shawn Colvin

  45. D.... ....

It's a good song, but I found her mumbling a bit annoying.

    D.... ....

Go listen to Barney the dino. Now that's annoying. Chuckle Head and. Leave T'S. Out of it. 3 yrs to shut up...

  46. w.... ....

What a great energy Shawn brings to all her songs...emotions abound...and you feel it..Thank You, Shawn, for this sonic beauty that you've bestowed upon the world.

  48. K.... K....

Mr. Diggler: Your comment was quite offensive to all women, especially to those women who share their lives with us through their music. I can't speak for Shawn Colvin, but I don't think she would consider your comment as a compliment.

  49. w.... ....

I think I'm falling down the avalanche. Fallen.  Good song.

  50. v.... ....

jessica from bethel. Alaska...are you out there????

  51. M.... P....

Female singer/songwriters like Shawn Colvin and Jonatha Brooke (formerly of The Story) both have voices that are so incredible that they just give you chills!

  52. M.... ....

    Giggidy.....Amen Brother!

  53. j.... ....

You would marry a woman for having a voice like this.

  54. C.... P....

Janet bloom i hope everytime you hear this song you think about me and the beautyfull time We had toguetter Sincerelly All yours CAHRLOS SEBASTIANO

  55. b.... ....

There is something very elegant about the minor composition of this tune, dig it!

    b.... ....

And the guitar work is just amazing, one of my favorites for many years.

  56. M.... K....

this is the very best album she ever released. forget fixing up dylan songs, sting songs, sure its pretty, but this whole set is amazing

  57. D.... D....

I've got an even better idea for you Hugh - How about you go and play in traffic?

  58. H.... L....

Hey I've got a wild idea Dirk, write us a bunch of new tunes, with a bunch of new chords.

  59. A.... D....

    sunny came home!!!

  60. C.... P....

I dedicate this wonderfull song to a wonderfull woman JANET BLOOM ifrom me with love ! For you !!

  61. D.... D....

Well, Joni Mitchell is as much a jazz and progressive genius as she is a folky. Carol King is a very mainstream pop songwriter - she worked out of the Brill Building (along with Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, and Paul Simon). Tracy Chapman just bores me and, yes, Joan Baez and Judy Collins were true folkies who wrote incredible songs. I guess I'm taking about the million+ women folk artists who all sing the same and use the same chords over and over, and over...

  62. C.... W....

    The industry.

  63. C.... W....

Folky-hippy-chick crap is what this is all about. Which folky-hippy-chick crap can't you stand? Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Laura Nyro, Carol King, Joan Armatrading, Tracy Chapman? Seems to me it's a women's genre. Men dominate it though it is a bit fey, no?: I'm just saying.

  64. C.... D....

LOVE this so much; can never get tired of it !

    C.... D....

    David Crosby guitars

    C.... D....

@William Iliff Really? Cd jacket list is as follows Shawn Colvin, acoustic guitar background vocals, John Leventhal electric guitar, mandolin, keyboards, drum programming, bass, background vocals.

  65. n.... ....

I first heard the end of this song on radio2 while at sea (north sea) and spent 6 years trying to find the rest of it plus the title and then the album.......best stuff I've heard in years....still think its fabulous....real talent goes a long way.

    n.... ....

I certainly hope you found it!

  66. C.... K....

I was fortunate enough to meet a similar minded soul in the waste bin who turned me on to this girl, run long n free Daz.

  67. r.... ....

We were introduced to Shawn Colvin on our local public radio station.

  68. s.... ....

The whole album is phenomenal -- my favorite of all time.

  69. H.... L....

Why are our public radio stations playing such dreck and this song languishes in relative obscurity? Such real soul, heart and craftsmanship needs greater heralding.

  70. f.... ....

So beautiful - everything - vocals, arrangements, harmonies, guitars, lyrics - this song should have been nominated for one of the best songs that year. 100% Outstanding song in every way! .

  71. M.... ....

I agree with you Nacho66...Shawn Colvin has done some great work..!

  72. R.... W....

Best track from her best album, thanks for uploading this...!!

  73. J.... P....

Great song from a great songwriter

  74. D.... D....

Thanks for posting this! I've been looking for this tune for almost 20 years!
Back in the '90's I was travelling thru Colorado on my way farther West when I heard this on some hippy-dippy radio station out of Boulder. Now, usually, I can't stand this folky-chick-hippy crap but the melody, chords, performance, and production of this gem hit me right in the heart...
Thanks much! Now I know who's album to buy after 20 years.
