Shawn Colvin - Private Universe Lyrics

No time no place to talk about the weather
Labour of love is ours to endure
You said the chance wasn't getting any better
The promise of love is hard to ignore
The highest branch on the apple tree
It was my favourite place to be
I can hear them breaking free
But they could not see me

And I will run for shelter
Endless summer lift the curse
It feels like nothing matters
In our private universe

I have all I want is that simple enough
Whole lot more I'm thinking of
Every night about six o'clock
The birds come down from the palm to talk
They talk to me, the birds talk to me
If I go down on my knees

And I will run for shelter
Endless summer lift the curse
It feels like nothing matters
In our private universe
It feels like nothing matters
In our private universe

And it's a pleasure that I have known
And it's a treasure that I have gained

It's a tight squeeze but I won't let go
Time is on the table and the dinner's cold

And I will run for shelter
Endless summer lift the curse
It feels like nothing matters
In our private universe

And I will run for shelter
Endless summer lift the curse
It feels like nothing matters
In our private universe

There's got to be a plexiglass gobo in front of her, or something...
Her voice and the guitar are obviously mic'ed, but the mics aren't in the shot, yet the sound isn't dissipating out into paradise.
A great performance of a great song.

wonderful!!! so pure and special!!! just love it ☺

  3. J.... R....

Beautiful version of this song by my favorite artist Neil Finn.

  4. P.... K....

Please, don't forget to credit this song to Crowded House (Neil Finn) which released this originally in 1994 for their studio album "Together Alone".

  5. C.... N....

    Makes it look so easy

  6. C.... ....

Pure Shawn, no frills, just the voice, the guitar, she fills the stage just with herself. If you ever get the chance to see her perform, GO!

  7. J.... S....

@TrishKingMaine I wish she would make another CD soon... :-(

Does this woman have to die before she attains superstardom??? I simply adore her work. No artist has her sense of phrasing, and few, her complete melding with her instrument. Please Shawn, keep writing and recording until your fingers drop off!

    very talented and amazing voice!

Shawn did an amazing version of this song on one of KGSR's (Austin TX) Broadcasts series back in the mid 90s. If anyone has a copy the single in file form, I'd greatly appreciate it. Otherwise, the CD is currently out of print.

She's great and with that Martin guitar is even better. Love her playing and singing.

My guess is that it's a .38mm Dunlop nylon pick. I use them sometimes for a really bright, smooth strumming sound like she's getting here. My own D-28 sounds very similar to this whith this combination.

    Thanks for the tips!

I pick them up all over the place...wherever I can. A few I figured out by ear but not necessarily the way she does it...Private universe you can figure out by watching this video...it's straight forward except for her right hand. But Neil Finn's version is very similar...try googling the title...I'm using the Finn version at the moment.

Thanks for the offer. I just thought you might have a source for tabs that I am not aware of. I don't really have a specific song in mind. I just want to have the music available when I want to play around with it. When I get into a specific song and need help I may look you up!

  16. M.... F....

If you give me a specific song you're interested in I might be able to help...

  17. t.... ....

I agree completely. I envy her her voice. Can't find a flaw! Sounds like you are as into her guitar prowess as I am, can I ask where you get access to her tabs or sheet music, or do you just figure it out? I'm not quite able to do that yet. Watching her videos helps.

you're welcome but I don't think that's the solution...it's a bit mysterious to me...at times it even seems to be something other than a conventional pick...I have progressed somewhat with the rythmic technique...but she's just so FLUID...she's the best...I love every inflection and sublty of her playing and singing and the sheer natural beauty of her voice.

  19. t.... ....

Hey, thanks. I guess I'll get a flexible pick and try it out. I agree, she is amazing on the guitar and keeps me picking it up every day.

  20. M.... F....

I noticed that but thought it must be an optical illusion...it seems very very flexible almost like it lays flat against the strings...I stop framed it many times and in one frame could see that she holds it very much in the center of the pick...can't figure it out...

  21. t.... ....

She's got some special kind of pick. Do you know what it is?

  22. M.... F....

the right hand technique drives me crazy...it's just so fluid...I think that's the single most distinct aspect of her playing...that driving layered rythm...it makes all the difference in this song...and others...I'll keep trying
