Shakey Graves - Late July Lyrics

Oh yeah, gold digger took my money
Dipped my heart and hands in honey
Oh, snake lady stole my savings
Told gold digger she was having my babies

Well, gold digger swung, snake lady fell
Yeah, took gold digger up to Chapel Hill
I married her fast; murdered her young
Took my money back and made my run

Well, bus driver, all in red
Go pull this bus over and end up dead
Go drive this bus down to Mexico
Park it on the cliff where that good grass grows

Until a chopper came along one sunny day
To burn my crops, lock me away
Girl, I'm eager, young, and qualified
Got a date with that chair, oh, in late July

Oh yeah so, my momma, old and grey
Sittin' at her home, just a-weepin' away
Her only boy, washed down the drain
Gonna take her son and lock him away
Well, momma should be proud of me
I lived like a man, oh, I'll die like a king
Cause I'm eager, young, and qualified
Got a date with that chair, oh in late July

My pappy old and fat
Chewin' his cigars with his hair slicked back
Roll him over, beat him black
Say it's from that boy he never had
Well, papa should be in my place
To fry like bacon, hang like lace
Cause I'm eager, young, and starry-eyed
Got a date with that chair, oh in late July

Oh yeah so, big Betty, my old squeeze
Kissed you so good you go weak in the knees
Come to see your old man pop
I wanna have you there when my big heart stops
Don't you worry, don't you fret
I won't die with no regrets
Oh, the big leagues call and I reply
"I got a date with that chair, oh, in late July"

  36. shawn portz

In a strange way I feel like god was saying a joke through that hippie. The whiskey was inspiration and it did not come from the warm brew.

  37. Chuck Monroe

So, eight or nine years ago, we wandered into Uncle Billies BBQ at the Oasis Restaurant on Lake Travis in Austin, Texas one Saturday night. This guy sets up and begins his set. 1 man band. Bass drum built into a suitcase.
We were totally, totally blown away!

  38. Indyhayhay

Not a fan of his stories lol

  39. Rari Martinez

    This is the best version

  40. old boehne

  52. Kaw Rider

When life really hurts this young man, his music is going to be legendary. What a brilliant star.

    ArcoZakus

    Kaw Rider,
It surely must have by now. This video is from seven years ago.

  53. John Whiteman

    Shaky graves....

  54. Zac Gear

To the "hasn't made it in the music industry" comment: Pretty sure this type of music is specifically "anti-industry" as such. Have you ever listened to his song "Word of Mouth"? Another of his great oldies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDvsTedIUMY

Having said that, that's not to say he's not been successful in certain touring circuits which suit his style - not everyone listens to strictly mainstream music. Folk throughout history has been extremely influential to other genre's - and while currently maybe not the most popular it's undertones and often even lyrics can be heard through other artist as well.

I'd say Shakey has laid his place firmly enough in history by painting some beautiful pictures with word and tone, essentially immortalizing parts of this time and "his"story. Americana/Folk evolution at it's finest told through the eyes of an eager young man.

  55. rocketHtown

    Bad ass

  56. gnarzikans

i appreciate some of that tasty dissonance \m/

He reminds me of the once-ler from the lorax 😄..love this dude.

  63. Jeremiah Willis

He lost me with Che Guevara, on the stone there. I mean, good song, and it's a great portrait of che, who has some descent poems and all, but it takes all of 5 minutes to realize that che was a huge piece of shit, might as well have a hitler, mau, castro, Kim Jong-un, or Stalin portrait. College kids think its cool I guess.

  64. Emily Pollifax

That was such an enjoyable tune. it really ruined the shitty dismal mood I was in. Thank you.

  80. Vend Erre

This song is like Tenacious D's Greatest Song Ever or whatever, it's him trying to recapture what happened that one time.

  81. seren bowen welsh radio

I started out on drums...actually mom's knitting needles banging away on pillows trying to be Ringo...then got distracted by guitar...I think Shakey has the right idea here with a collaboration of percussion and strings. Cool. Nice story too.

  82. Danielle Chandler

Droopy Weiners is the perfect example of why you don't want to be the first one to fall asleep at a party.

  90. Carl Parnham

  92. TheRando10

Anyone else miss these vibes from Shakey?

  93. Kory Dugger

    Your amazing

  94. John Stone

Can someone tell me what genre of music this is. I'm in love with it and wan't to find more.

    ArcoZakus

    John Stone,
I think it may be a new one. The "Shakey Graves" genre?

That obviously does not help your quest, so if you are not familiar with Bob Dylan's songs, you might try a few of them, especially his earliest ones.

Oh, yeah -- be sure to check out John Prine if you're not already familiar with his work. Also, maybe Rodney Crowell's "Highway 17".

    PlanetEvans

I would say it's Country Blues, or Delta Blues, with a decent dose of Americana, and maybe a hint of Goth Country. He's talented enough to draw from a few traditions and come up with his own style, but I think what's probably standing out for you is that distinctive guitar sound. That's open D tuning on a parlor guitar, I'm pretty sure. It's like somebody boiled the South down to its primal essence and poured it into a string instrument. I think most of us are used to hearing it played with a slide.

Dunno how to direct you to find more music like this. Maybe Colter Wall, or just do a search on YT for Americana.

  95. Panic

    Ole Droopy Weiners.

  96. Big D Desert Dweller

What is his guitar tuning on this song?

    The Kadman

DADF#AD give or take a semi-tone or so depending on which version your looking at. This one's lower I think

    Big D Desert Dweller

The Kadman yep your correct! DAF#AD. I looked it up on ultimate guitar tabs and played it. It sounds so cool, hard to believe it’s so easy to play

  97. June bug RoeVinAlanLukeJaminJakeJamesJonny

Hell yeah I agree don't let him [email protected] anymore of your time or talent... Get after it bro 😜
