Sevdaliza - Shahmaran Lyrics

I'd weigh a million pounds if you were gravity
I'd take a billion pills if they gave me sanity

Time has passed me by
Share my great advice
For granted, taken nice
Weigh a pit underneath the light

The flaws that perfect us
And all the affections
As they infect us, love couldn't help us
Ooh, you crawl underneath me

I'd die a million deaths, and you'd resurrect me
I'd fall a billion times, but you wouldn't let me
You wouldn't let me

The flaws that perfect us
And all the affections
As they infect us, love couldn't help us
Where would I go?
Where would I go?

Where would I go?
Where would I go?
Where would I go...?

Ooh, you crawl underneath me

It’s fascinating how those lovely bi-racial/multiracial people are using their cultural heritage to create art that is so unique and global. Persian culture and middle eastern culture in general are so rich and vibrant and I love how I can listen to our sound in your music. Keep up the great work ❤️

I don’t see why Sevdaliza feels that she has a right to make a commentary on a group of marginalized people that she does not belong to and to portray herself as a queen (even if she is a queen of snakes) among black people. I don’t care what point she’s trying to make, it’s not hers to make. She can’t speak on the experience of a people she is not a part of. She’s Iranian and Dutch, speak on Iranian and Dutch experiences, not the black experience. No wonder she has a song in her album titled Hubris, this shit is extremely arrogant, but whatever gets people talking, no matter who it exploits.

    S.... J....

Liv Jack you’re so bitter ... it is merely an artistic expression. no one is exploiting anything here.

Oh my god I've been watching this for 3 days trying to get it and now I just can't stop crying. I am wracked with sobs. This is the most beautiful, passionate, and deep representation of oppression I've ever seen.

Dragging along something that needs WATER, when you know damn good and well that YOU need it. So you wisen up and let go of that thing, to go search for water for yourself. And society tells you 'HERE! You've finally made it! look at all the things you have to assist in that!' To wisen up only to be fooled again. A mirage of water in a diamond encrusted cup is almost crueler then not understanding that you need it for you, and not for your things.

To realize that you need the water, weary on your journey to find it and surrounded by hard earned treasures that others died trying to find. To fall into it with your last breathe in a golden palace, thinking you will finally, FINALLY be sated and fulfilled.

Only to realize your mistake as you shatter the mirage, and slip into death from lack of the very thing you thought you had.

Hmm. The masculine is hard and hot. The feminine is cool and wet. The masculine must submit to the feminine in order to find relief from hardship. Being strong can only get you so far. In woman, is a different strength. Acknowledge and respect. This to me is man going in search of his higher spiritual self. Submission is what opens the flood gates to spiritual wisdom and for that you must be in touch with your own feminine nature. Snakes represent wisdom and the feminine as well. He submits to her wisdom or to the wisdom of the divine. The water is an illusion he could not Physically drink the water.. notice he does not drink. It is a nourishment of his Spirit. Notice some similar themes in the FKA TWIGS 2 Weeks video. Meditation is a form of submission (passive, listening, receiving feminine) where prayer is active (asking, doing, masculine). Listen to GD and receive spiritual nourishment. For the journey he had to leave his burdens behind .. and open his eyes.... see past distractions, temptation and lust, pride, violence ( his lower nature). Ha!! then he dies to himself and find true freedom. Or was it all a dream? A mirage? Did he pass or fail?

  56. B.... ....

I see the day to day life, a beaten path, the search for "water" a substantially established position in the world. Gold adorns their bodies "potential." Ropes tether them to a load reminiscent of a ship. Someone else's ambition, and their hard work will see that ship to water. A man departs from the beaten path, and traverses the desert, alone, rooted in his own ambitions he seeks to make use of that potential. While traversing the desert the man reaches a cross road, everything in that room could have helped him to continue onward. Water in small quantities to aid him in traversing the desert, things to serve as motivation i.e. fortifying of the body or mind to ward off thirst and reached that established position. The car material possessions, the record the arts, the gun some sort of power, but he chooses the woman and drowns. All other options collapse his decision has been made he'll no longer continue onward. The price? The death of his ambitions. The death of the man he could have been.

To everyone who is misinterpreting this video:

Sevdaliza wasn’t trying to portray anything negative. At all. She was however, interpreting materialistic ideals that black men face in America. They’re dragging a giant yacht, in search of water, only for one to realize how pointless of a task he has found himself in. The one who wandered off realized what he was doing was pointless, managed to find an oasis (mirage) while facing temptation only to lose the battle and find himself facing dire consequences, alluding to him closing his eyes and accepting whatever is coming next, like the very beginning of the video. He just didn’t realize the reality of what he was doing fast enough.

So many in today’s society deem power and physical, tangible, temporary things in life as the American Dream, or as the manifestation of success, when it reality that same menial pursuit is only keeping millions and millions caged and oppressed by their own ideal of what success means in an already flawed society. And in a lot of instances, this chase after “idealism” costs people their very lives.

This yacht, this perceived paradigm of “success”, that these men are willing to drag through their lives. Heavy, hard, and shiny on the outside. Tied up to it, mentally and physically, only needing to release themselves from it, and quench their minds of the truth.

Sevdaliza is of Dutch-Iranian descent. A Shahmaran in ancient Iranian/Arabic folklore is a snake-like woman who enchants and/or somewhat looks after/teaches those who manage to find it. The original story is of a man who ends up lost in the desert, and manages to find her, a.k.a the King of Snakes. The lost man eventually betrayed her, and her truth and existence is given up and she was used to treat a King of Tarsus who falls ill. The man who betrayed her inevitably still faces turmoil and difficulties in his life, despite all the Shahmaran tried to reach him.

The original story, and the one Sevdaliza re-vamped, are in no way trying to say that women of any other ethnicity, other than black or African are deemed as more desirable. Since the original folklore is of Arabic/Iranian/Persian descent, it makes sense that a woman of medium-fair skin made this video. Historically, it’s rather similar.

In the video, the man caught just a glimpse of the Shahmaran’s existence. He managed to see a sliver of the truth, eyes wide open, staring at all he tried so desperately to hang on to. Realizing it was the very thing that probably took his life from him.

Sevdaliza and the directors are paying tribute and respect, in their own unique artwork, as to what many African American men face today, and have been facing. I salute her for recognizing these issues, and the many other issues a lot of her videos point out. That doesn’t mean she has anything against Black women, or African Americans whatsoever. This is such a stunning, and emotional glimpse as to what goes on in the hearts and minds of so many people in today’s society.

She herself may not be Black, she herself may not have gone through certain struggles, but she damn sure knows what struggle is. And she and the directors damn sure have the artistic ability to capture it, and vicariously feel it, and turn it into a visual story.

Hopefully that cleared up any misconceptions. Not trying to be mean or anything.

    E.... F....

Steffen Zimmer Again, I wasn’t insinuating that men in general, don’t go through these hardships. I just decided to type out what the creators of this video were trying to accomplish. And I gave some background on what the title of this song means. That’s it. I know that men in general struggle, besides black men. I was just focusing on black men, since that’s what the video did, however I’m not singling out any other ethnicity, like I’m assuming you think I did. Again, I just did this for the purpose of the music video.

While I don’t completely agree with the other things you’ve said, I appreciate your input.

This video is about giving up being a human and becoming something greater. First he leaves behind all of his problems, his previous life and rebels against the system that suppress him. Then that spirit offers all kinds of gifts to him but his true wish was to be like that spirit so he drinks from the water of knowledge. He is thirsty for knowledge and wisdom.
