September - Can't Love Myself Lyrics

All this talk of living
Drives me crazy
Making something, I don't nothing
Baby, it's hard, baby so hard
I would like to wear your face for an evening
You are always staying
I'm always leaving
And baby I'm gone

And I'm saying let me out of this silent soul

I can't love myself
But I can be myself
Can be no one else
‘Cause in the end, we are the ones we are
And I just can't love myself
So how could you my friend
Guess I can't pretend, but in the end
We are the ones we are
And I just can't love myself

I'm the kind of thing you don't remember
Like a rainy day and its September
I'm gone, baby I'm gone
People never hear me, my words are silent
When I try to sing it
It sounds like a siren
Baby, it's hard

And I'm saying let me out of this lonely life

I can't love myself
But I can be myself
Can be no one else
‘Cause in the end, we are the ones we are
And I just can't love myself
So how could you my friend
Guess I can't pretend, but in the end
We are the ones we are

Whatever you say
I'm not gonna chance
Whatever you see today
Will stay the same, oh

I can't love myself
But I can be myself
Can be no one else
‘Cause in the end, we are the ones we are

I can't love myself
But I can be myself
Can be no one else
‘Cause in the end, we are the ones we are
And I just can't love myself
So how could you my friend
Guess I can't pretend, but in the end
We are the ones we are
And I just can't love myself

She then says that she is not going to change herself. She is going to embrace the tension. In a way she's being a strange kind of Nietzschean superman. It would be pathetic to change her values and equally pathetic to change herself, so she's going to be a self-hater. But now it is a positive decision - she is, in a way, being herself. And, ironically, she probably can love this about herself. A profound song in many ways and a thumpingly good tune.

I think there are some important philosophical messages contained within this song. First, there's Bishop Butler's point, namely that things are what they are, and not other things. 'We are the ones we are'. She also says that she does not love herself and thus finds it hard to understand how anyone else can. Presumably she loves qualities she does not herself instantiate. She can resolve this tension two ways: change her values, or change herself.
